So true what you said about subcontractors leaving imperfections for the next guy to deal with. By the time you get to the finished product it’s a snowball effect and your house is a mess. I was working with a general contractor awhile back and his foundation guys and framers and drywall crew had all been working with him for around 20 years so they all knew each other and there was good communication and rapport with each other. The end result was straight walls and no nail pops and everyone was happy - including the customer. Makes a huge difference in my opinion.

Wrap a little bit of electrical tape around the joint of the socket extension when adjusting the Plumb wall braces. It stiffens it up just enough to make it much easier to get it into the nut. Learned that from an experienced mechanic.

@@anoka114 It was the type of soil I think. Around here the backfill has so much sticky packed clay and limestone rock in it. Back then builders didn't use French drains around the base. We all thought there leaks somewhere, but there weren't. But you could see black mold growing on the forms. Builders would strip off the inside foam, then they started put a sealer on the outside and adding drains.

As a 40 year veteran Aerospace Engineer, I have lived/worked in 38 Countries and most of those build their houses in Concrete, including the Villa I currently own in the French Riviera. And more than that, living many years in Israel (during both Gulf Wars), I can personally attest to the strength (and emotional support) this kind of construction lends ... have a SCUD Missile detonate 1km from your house and all you lose are your Windows (which got duct taped to prevent glass chards flying) but nothing else moved a mm. I am originally from Texas ... was there during the Tornado that hit Fort Worth back in 2000. And ever time I see the destruction like we just saw in Kentucky a couple of weeks ago, I just shake my head and ask "why?" ... knowing Insurance (idiots) and the homeowners will probably build back in conventional "wood" methods (and as a young man, I know that as well being a "Framer" for a few years). Same for our Hurricane prone Gulf/East Coasts ... ICF is like a "Boat" (if properly coated). All I can say is thank goodness folks like you are slowly turning the Tide (pun intended) ... I've oft said that if I was POTUS after the horrible loss in Property/Life that accompanies these events, I wish I could have a "Fireside Chat" with the American public and simply read them the story of "The 3 Little Pigs" ... maybe they'd get it.

you should think about getting a boom truck if your going to do basements regularly. the reach is amazing you will find yourself using it for all kinds of things and if you get one with a nice open flatbed you can carry all your bracing on the truck combine with a concrete pump trailer and your a one stop shop you can hang the pump hose from the crane and have the capability of a big pump truck. crazy thing is though the pump will cost more than a boom truck with a 100ft boom

Great videos love watching them. I have a question... first lift (basement walls), does the next row of blocks need to be clipped vertically to the last pour? Noticed the concrete is poured above the brackets, so securing with clips can't be done. Or does it hold without the use of clips. Newbie here in Prince edward Island starting a self icf build in the spring. Thanks
@imchris5000
@imchris5000 3 жыл бұрын
does your bracing system have brackets for handrail on the inside? when I did a icf commercial job the bracing we use had handrail for fall protecting it just snapped right in then you slid 2x4s through the 2 slots worked pretty good. even though the walkway is under 6ft so you can get away with no handrail its not a bad idea. also watch how the walk boards overlap sitting one way is great the otherway is a loonytoons joke setup

I’m surprised that you don’t scabble the top of the concrete (mechanically remove grout back to aggregate) back when I was pouring walls the engineers were really hot on it ! I mean on the cured top of the wall that will become the bottom of the next pour, The idea is to increase the strength of the joint.

Good morning Mike I know you are a big fan of ICF . Are there any negatives of using this over a removeable form type or a block type wall ? I saw one KZfaqr/contractor that said he doesn't use this type of system , because in his area no exterminating company would give any type of warranty against termites and other insects because they don't leave visible signs . I guess those critters go behind the foam ?
