I always think this song, and this recording - seems modern for its time. It is very much like do-wop from the 50s. I am certain, and heard examples that you could say was rock and roll from back then - incredible!

Actually, in small towns, there were picnics and other events at which there was community singing at least into the 50s, with much of the music being from the turn of the century. Sometime in the 60s, there seems to have been a disconnect with prior periods of music. It was rock or nothing. Likewise, in "serious" orchestral music, all previous notions of harmony and tunefulness were jettisoned. Frankly, there is little, aside from some movie scores, that I feel is worth listening to since then, at least in the US. Thanks to You Tube, I am finding some rays of hope in EUrope

Honey dear, want you near; just turn out the light and then come over here! Nestle close, up to my side. My heart's a-fire, with love's desire! In my arms, rest complete. I never thought that life could ever be so sweet! Till I met you some time ago! But now I know, I love you so! My honey! Oh, you beautiful doll, you great big beautiful doll! Let me put my arms about you; I could never live without you! Oh you beautiful doll you great big beautiful doll! If you ever leave me how my heat will ache; I want to hug you but I fear you'd break! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh, you beautiful doll! Precious prize, close your eyes. Now we're going to visit lover's paradise! Press your lips again to mine! For love is king of everything! Squeeze me dear, I don't care! Hug me just as if you were a grizzly bear! This is how I'll go through life! No care or strife, when you're my wife! My honey! Oh, you beautiful doll, you great big beautiful doll! Let me put my arms about you; I could never live without you! Oh, you beautiful doll, you great big beautiful doll! If you ever leave me how my heart will ache; I want to hug you but I fear you'd break! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh, you beautiful doll!

I've read that the opening chorus of this song was the first 12-bar-blues on record, one year before Hart Wand's 'Dallas Blues'. Interesting to hear that this song uses a blues as an introduction, whereas many of Bessie Smith's records use a song chorus as an intro and then turn into a blues.
@upstateguitar
@upstateguitar 8 жыл бұрын
I had read that too, and originally stated it in the description, but I removed it for some reason. I did count it out though, it definitely is a 12 bar I-IV-V blues progression, even if it doesn't sound very bluesy!
