Moonlight Bay is a rather pleasant song that was written by Percy Wenrich, lyrics by Edward Madden, and sung by the American Quartet. It was published in 1912 and was a huge hit.
The American Quartet consists of 4 members: John Bieling as first tenor, Billy Murray as second tenor, Steve Porter as baritone, and William F. Hooley as bass. The group lasted from 1899-1925 and were highly successful.

@@DavyanHatch My limbs went numb and so did my insides. My tongue was numb and my vision faded out. My hearing was muffled too. I was on the bathroom floor where I fell but my dieing brain was showing my loved ones who I was leaving behind while playing this song. I was given cpr quickly and taken to the hospital in my car where it was found that I was depleted of potassium. I was given potassium and nitroglycerin. I needed a cane for a couple of weeks because of muscle weakness but have recovered. My Mama (1914-1981) used to sing this in the 1950s-60s, and since she's been gone i very seldom have heard a recording of it, so i really love hearing this, it sure brings back fond early memories of her. It's sad that so many people began to quit singing just for their own entertainment the more that records, movies, radio, and then TV became widely available.

We could hear the voices ringing; They seemed to say, "You have stolen my heart" "Now don't go 'way! "As we sang " Love's Old Sweet Song" On Moonlight Bay Candle lights gleaming on the silent shore Lonely nights, dreaming till we meet once more Far apart, her heart, is yearning With a sigh for my returning With the light of love still burning As in days of yore We were sailing along On Moonlight Bay. How wonderful. A day and a time that moved much slower. People were mindful of how they affected other people and getting married along with looking to make something of yourself and start a family were values and standards held by all people crossing racial and ethnic boundaries. The music from that era captures the delight of life and the exploration of possibilites that the time offered. Our great great grandparents were far better people than we are today.

The American Quartet - as heard in this recording - was only organized ca. 1909 and included the members listed above. The singers listed above are NOT the individuals shown in the photograph. In fact, not one of the men shown in the photograph is among those listed. They MAY be the men who made up the quartet in the early 1920s but strongly suspect that they made up some other unrelated male quartet. Not one - - Bieling, Murray, Porter or Hooley is in this photo. Bieling had retired in 1914; Hooley died in 1918; Porter remained with the group into the early 1920s - but none are present in this image. Billy Murray - lead tenor with his distinctive voice heard in this recording - - is definitely not in the photo shown above. The second image [shown at 1:57 in this recording} also shows none of the individuals heard in this recording. Regarding the statement that the American Quartet was active 1899-1925 - this is also misleading. The ca. 1901-1905 group was actually an early version of the Haydn Quartet, albeit with Albert Campbell and W.T. Leahy as the tenors. The men heard on this current title - "Moonlight Bay" were the individuals listed by the above presenter of this KZfaq offering. This ensemble only organized in 1909 and was active into the 1920s with many personnel changes. For the sake of historical accuracy - wish that the actual famous - 1909-1914 period group's photograph - the group heard on this disc - would be added/inserted as a correction. Retired, Sound Recordings Archivist, Library of Congress, 35 years - My sources include that of Jim Walsh, pioneer recordings expert who actually knew John Bieling (who died in 1947), Albert Campbell who also died in 1947, and Billy Murray - his great friend - who died in 1954. Walsh was able to interview this pioneer recording artists over a period of over 20 years, gathering information on their recording days. Yours truly, Your . . .

Lord Stompy actually it was a really popular song that everyone knew back in the 50-60s, but I'm sure they didn't know the original version, kinda like Happy Birthday or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and whatnot. They sing it in the film This Boy's Life, which happens in 1957, though it was made in 1993.

@@aileen9553 I don't know how damn old you have to be to think The Beatles were trashy new Pop. What like 90? Congratulations. Not only was their version a joke that wasn't trying to be good or to be taken seriously in a live show (because again, Moonlight Bay was apopular song that everyone knew), The Beatles are the best thing to ever happen to music, and nothing will ever get close to them. Likely. Early Beatles are pretty damn nice and still blow most things out if the water, but late Beatles is unbeatable. The sheer amount of great songs they released is unbelievable. They were practically at the origin of many concepts, whether it be boybands, Heavy Metal, Psychedelic Rock, Avant-garde stuff, etc. If you think the American Quartet or whoever else can even compare to The Beatles, then you haven't listened to them enough. Moonlight Bay is a great song, though.

Given that they remain the absolute standard of vocal harmony euphoria, I'd recognize Billy Murray, John Bieling, Steve Porter and William F. Hooley anywhere. And that is definitely not them in the pictures in the above video clip. Nonetheless, in terms of genius level vocal harmony, this is how it's done, folks. None better. Ever.

Around 30 years ago Disney soon gonna lose the rights to Mickey because he was created almost 50 year at the time. And Disney pushed the courts to make the copyright thing longer, so actually this isn’t public domain at all, as it’s just about as old as Mickey Mouse

Answer is easy - call Library of Congress. Copyright. They will probably advise you that: 1) all Edison recorded material is public Domain, that most (2) pre 1925 sheet music is public domain. But!! It's up to you to be sure by doing the nec. research @ Copyright.
