They are both geniuses, but I see the difference is that Urahara knows his limitations and is willing to work around it, while Aizen wants to remove all of his limitations. In that manner you can say that Aizan is the man who wants to become God and Urahara is the man who wants to control God (Ichigo). You can say that Aizen's greatest flaw is his ego, his arrogance that no one is his equal. In all of Soul Society Aizen felt that only Urahara was ever close to being his equal. But Urahara sees the whole picture he knew what Aizen was up to but he also knew he didn't have to fight Aizen alone. With time and careful planning Urahara was able to create a super group based around Ichigo to infiltrate Soul Society. In some ways you can say that the entire series was a chess match between Aizen and Urahara. You explained it accurately that a fight between the two of them would be action- reaction and would go on for 10+ issues. You also have to give Urahara credit, he had enough foresight to bring Mayuri into his squad to head the research and development. Aizen was too focused on his own goals that he failed to see Gin Ichimaru had plans to betray him all along. There are alot of difference but in terms of intelligence I would give it to Urahara because he is more trustworthy and he acknowledges the importance of team work, while Aizen treats everyone like his pawns, Aizen's followers fear him, while Urahara have allies who respect him. I have to stop here, because this can end up being an 10 page essay easily.

I love how Ichigo, the protagonist and hero of Bleach was nothing more than a tool used and moved around like a chess piece by Aizen and Urahara both. Aizen wants Ichigo to become a whetstone from which he can achieve perfection and godhood, while Urahara wants to use Ichigo to either weaken Aizen so his Kido could take effect, or stright up defeat Aizen if possible. And in the end, just as it seems Aizen won, Urahara comes in and clinches the win with his Kido. So I disagree that their ending was disappointing. Aizen seemed to be one step ahead of Urahara throughout the series, only to finally suffer a checkmate in the end. I think it was very fitting and poetic.

The question should be mayuri and aizen who is superior. mayuri had a chair that did more to aizen than anyone else in bleach. plus mayuri was willing to bet his science against aizen. Not sure why everyone always leaves out mayuri from this discussion.

I feel like the entire series went almost exactly as aizen planned. Aizen knew about yhwach long before he woke up, and had to come up with a way to defeat an almighty being that he himself couldn't match. So he came up with the idea of Ichigo. He created White and got isshin sent to the world of the living as part of his plot to create a human hollow quincey hybrid. Throughout the series he then set up opponents of gradually increasing strength for ichigo to overcome, just like he claimed in fake karakura town, ultimately culminating in god aizen himself. That's where his plan hit it's first snag. What he wanted was for ichigo to gain the powers he eventually has at the end of the series: true zanpakuto and bankai, complete mastery of both hollow and quincey powers allowing him to beat aizen, and then beat yhwach when he turns up. But that didn't happen. Instead, Ichigo attains a form never seen before in any other shinigami; final getsuga tenshou. Ichigo overcomes aizen, but he does it the wrong way and looses his powers. That's where kisuke comes in. Kisuke has kinda been playing the other side of this story the whole time. In every single arc, kisuke has always been on the same side as ichigo, but right up until fake karakura town never fought on his behalf. If kisuke just wanted aizen dead, he could have joined ichigo in attacking soul society and killed him before he gained a complete hogyoku. Instead, he sends in ichigo alone with just some weak plebs and yoruichi to guide him, as a training method of forcing ichigo to get stronger. Same deal in hueco mundo, kisuke *could* help by killing all the espada, but instead he makes ichigo do it alone to get him ready for the future. Weather kisuke was training ichigo for yhwach like aizen was, or if he was training him to fight aizen I'm not sure, but once aizen is sealed in muken, kisuke continues aizens plan by giving ichigo his powers back, then chucking him into a situation that leads to him attaining his true zanpakuto. By the end of the series, yhwach is dead, the soul king is dead, and everything aizen aspired to achieve has happened. Aizen is the one and only person in the whole series who is completely happy with the outcome of bleach. And for the entire series, aizen has lined up ichigos enemies in ascending order of strength to constantly push him, while kisuke has worked from the other side to constantly give ichigo a push in the right direction, but never do the job for him or actually help him out. I wouldn't even be surprised of the seal that stopped aizen was part of aizen and kisuke's plan, in case ichigo failed to reach god level and defeat aizen properly, kisuke would activate the seal "stopping" aizen and saving a now defenseless ichigo. Been rewatching the series from the start recently, and working with this theory so many of aizens and kisukes actions that seem completely nonsensical suddenly fit neatly into a much larger plan. Or I'm talking out of my ass and crediting kubo with much better writing skills than he possesses. Either or.

Aizen is more focused and straightforward than Urahara, and Urahara is is more far reaching in his plans. I mean just compare their plans. Aizen's plan we to create super-soldiers and take the thrown of ultimate power. Urahara's plan was to bait Aizen into attacking Ichigo's friend so that Ichigo and Aizen would be in conflict and Ichigo would either take Aizen out or weaken him to the point Urahara could finish him. As for Mayuri, he just likes playing with his experiments. At his heart Mayuri is just a bratty kid. The difference between Aizen's and Mayori's god complexes is that Aizen wanted to be the ruler god in charge of everything, while Mayori wanted to be the god who created life.

It ultimately doesn't matter, since my bankai created Kubo who eventually made bleach. Urahara has always been my bitch hehe

Honestly I think urahara had planned from the beginning to have Ichigo defeat Aizen. He sent the hogyoku back to the soul society to 1. Draw out Aizen and give him a power up (someone to fight Ichigo) 2. He put the hogyoku inside Rukia because he knew Ichigo would go after her, get strong by fighting the captains, and be forced to fight Aizen. Why else do you think urahara also conveniently create a method to remove the hogyoku from Rukia's soul without harming her. Like why else would he create a method to remove it and make it easy for Aizen to get a hold of. I think Ichigo peaked urahara's interest because remember how urahara was researching the boundaries of hollows and soul reapers. Guess who is a mix of both? Ichigo. I think his plan was to pit Aizen against Ichigo to test the limits of zanpakto and hollows while at the same time getting his revenge against Aizen by sealing him and testing Aizen's power with the hogyoku. He most likely came up with this plan shortly after ichigo's powers were awakened and he saw his potential. Even after all those events when orihime gets kidnapped urahara conveniently has a gargonta ready to go in no time to travel to the hollow world and also makes preparations to let or captain level soul reapers pass through. Even with his intelligence don't you think he had that crap too well prepared beforehand to just be made up on the spot to help them out... Just seems like bleach was based on half of urahara's manipulation of events and people. That's my theory anyway.

Then shinji ask how long did you plan on watching him. I think aizen already know that uruhara have something especial. And if its true like want sinji says, that he already knew that someday aizen will betrayed them, then why he keep him on his side instead of lacking him in the maggots nest.

Urahara is clearly superior because he like Aizen sees and understands the world for what it is, but unlike Aizen is still content with it afterwards. Aizen saw the Soul King and was abhorred by it for no other reason than it didn't fit the image or the aesthetic he had in mind for the world so he decided to change that aspect of it. Urahara saw the Soul King (or at least found out about it) and thought 'Huh, you learn something new every day' and went on with his life because he understands that the status quo is not inherently a bad thing. Aizen wanted to be a revolutionary for the revolutions sake, not because he had actual ideas. Urahara had ideas and he knew he could realize them far easier and better in the controlled environment of the Soul Society.

I think 2spooky had a fact list that said Urahara was originally supposed to be the main bad guy and that he was supposed to have really killed Aizen in the Soul Society Arc. If you think about that then him placing the Hyokou(?) in Rukia makes a lot of sense because he would be standing where Aizen stood when he took it out of her. Why would he need to retrieve it this way? Admittedly I don't know.

I was always of the belief that Aizen was on a similar tier intellectually to Urahara, but Aizen was more powerful. Urahara's methods were always several steps ahead of him though. While Aizen is making back-up plans and contingencies, Urahara would have multiple back-ups and contingencies for those. If that makes much sense. Urahara is one of the most terrifying opponents to go up against in Bleach. Not because he's incredibly overpowering in his reiatsu (though he is by no means on the weaker end of captains), but because you can never know what he is really thinking. He has such a knack for hiding his motives and actions, that he could have already set in place a plan to defeat you, and you'd have absolutely no idea, no matter how powerful or intelligent you are. The example I'd reference is in the fight against Aizen, where he implanted the sealing spell to contain him in another hadou that he fired at Aizen. He had a pretty good idea that he'd become too powerful to defeat with the hogyouku at his disposal, so he implanted the sealing spell in advance. Urahara's forward thinking skills and tactical mind are, in my opinion, the most advanced in all of Bleach. He's sort of comparable to Batman in a way. Given the right amount of prep time, I don't think there is an enemy he can't defeat. I have to give credit to Aizen's misdirection and tactics as well. He's definitely no slouch! Pitted against anybody other than Kisuke Urahara, you'd be damned if you thought I wasn't betting on him to win. Kyouka Suigetsu is one of, if not, the most broken Zanpakuto in the entire series. Having the ability to control every one of your opponent's senses flawlessly - it's essentially an instant-win scenario if he places you under that power. The main flaw in Aizen is his gross sense of superiority, and his sheer arrogance blinding him from making the best possible decisions. He believes that even if you were to miraculously break through one of his schemes, his overwhelming power would be enough to easily handle any response you could muster. He'll try to break the spirit of his opponent first, and if that doesn't work, he'll use force. If for some reason he can't beat his opponent through force, he falls apart. Due to his god-complex he literally can't fathom the idea of someone standing against him on equal footing, and he stops thinking rationally. This is exactly what happened in is fight against Ichigo. As soon as he realized that Ichigo was actually a match for him, he just started throwing out more powerful attacks in the hope that one would stop him. Urahara doesn't have these problems, therefore he's able to keep a level-head and think his way out of tough situations. In the end, Aizen may be stronger, and smart in his own right; but against Urahara, his hubris will lead to his downfall. Even if he does wind up beating him, Urahara might not be the one to deal the finishing blow, but he'll set up the events that will lead to his defeat.

Actually, Urahara IS superior, and it can be proved quite easily. - Out of the two: -Who has a confirmed bankai? - Urahara - Who have more feats in kido? - Urahara - Who have more feats as a scientist? - Urahara - Who was acknowledged by the other as superior in intellect? - Urahara - Who was able to fully understand hogyoku after all? - Urahara - And finally, who won their hundred year long rivalry? - Urahara. Visoreds are welcomed back in Soul Society, Aizen fails his mission to become god and is put in prison, and it's all because of Urahara who exposed Aizen and sealed him away. Well of course there are SOME things Aizen is superior at, like physical strength or most likely physical speed (although feat with portable gigai puts that into question) as well, but still it doesn't change the fact that overall Urahara stomps Aizen in nearly all aspects, and that final verdict is clear.

I think if you were to talk about Mayuri's intelligence ranking being lower than Aizen/Urahara, Mayuri says it himself. His curiosity doesn't expand into 'end goals' and by end goals I mean like reshaping the world or conquering it. His creed as a scientist wouldn't allow it. If he could do that he'd be manipulating the natural world into something he'd already understand and that'd just be plain boring to him. Even with the whole "creating life thing" doesn't he mention that he wanted to do it simply as a contradiction to being a god of death? Even if he didn't I'd imagine that would be his only peeking interest in the whole ordeal and not to be a literal god. He did it because of the impossibility.

It's possible Urahara wanted to use the fire bird thing to destroy the hogyoku along with Rukia. Though sending Ichigo in after her kinda contradicts this idea.

I think Urahara's revenge plan was to one up Aizen and leave him in a state where Aizen couldn't do jack diddly squat, and to leave Aizen feeling unsatisfied for all eternity. Urahara realized that Aizen is a man who thinks he holds all the cards, and the best way to beat him is to take away his cards, and to stop playing. Leaving Aizen's own massive ego torture to himself. Beating him in a glorious way.

Urahara was empathetic of Aizens motivations in the end! i think the look on Kisuke's face was disappointment and regret towards the only person he respects intelligently taking the wrong path

Remember that rukia was going to executed by the flaming bird and maybe urahara thought that it would destroy the sogyoku. That bird was not so simple, it probably had some purifying properties that would have damaged the sogyoku.

As for a series, how much better could Bleach have been if it was the story of Urahara instead of Ichigo. Granted that Ichigo is easier to relate to for the target audience, but Urahara is just a vastly more interesting character and his story and capability would make a good story.

Urahara and Aizen are EXACTLY the same as L and Light. One is a mastermimd that looks over the shoulder to everyone. And the other is this kinda crazy genius a little bit of mad scientist. So it's the same that in Death Note. The arogant MF is the "Bad Guy" and the "Weird Genius" is the "Good Guy". But looking from Aizen's point of view, kinda the same as Bach, they want just to change things. And they are faced against the world that does not to want to change anything Edit: As I remember, on the anime episode 61, Aizen stops Ichigo's sound track and last hope hit (while Ichigo is on Bankai and he is not even released his shikai) with one finger. After that he proceeds to explain the different experiments he did with hollows (min 19:00) and says "Even I couldn't find the way to do it" (the fusion of shinigami and hollow) "But Urahara Kisuke did find a way". Then saying Urahara created the first Hogyoku. The thing he had when he stole Matsumoto's soul was only a prototype or was created AFTER Urahara's Hogyoku. And explaining the Hogyoku was hiden inside Rukia, the way that he says it, looks like he did hide the Hogyoku on Rukia's soul BEFORE she even went to the real world, so it was way before giving her the suppressive gigai

Hmm I really love your theory with Urahara being the final villain and basically setting the entire story into motion. As far as what I was expecting, I think Kubo got it close, I wanted something kind of like Light and L where the two keep outsmarting each other, but in the end, Urahara wins. There were definitely hints of that, but similar to where I thought he was going to go with Ichigo saving Orihime in that arc, it felt like we had the information there, Ichigo ends up with Orihime, Urahara wins out over Aizen, but not enough time was given to really flesh out any of these events to what it could have been. And had Kubo just taken the time to flesh out Orihime like he did Rukia or gave us just a little more insight into Urahara's psyche, there wouldn't be any issues here, but instead I feel like I'm looking at a draft of a novel rather than the real thing. There are ideas here that have potential to rival Naruto or One Piece at their best, but we're just given the bare bones and because of that how Bleach came together is kind of a mess. That's just my opinion though. I don't really consider myself a big Bleach fan, but I'll admit Kubo had some great ideas. I just wish they were executed better.

I've always believed that at the start they both had the same goals, but Urahara stood down and reluctanty accepted the world the way it is for the sake of peace, while Aizen stood up and sought to change it when no-one else would. That's how I've aways seen the both of them, anyway.

I would love to see Urahara flicking off Aizen. interesting POV in this. I never truly focused on Uraharas reason for doing this. kind of a revenge story on his side. I bed if Urahara is dead , then Aizen will be at his grave and go "I won!" lol. that would be funny. I just feel like Aizen found a good match with Urahara, they were good enemies or rivals. I wish the story behind them was a little more in depth. I wish we knew what Aizen really thought of Urahara, like, did he admire his intelligence or did he just dispute him? Aizen seems like a greedy power person but there has to be more behind what he was thinking other than "I want to be god". Aizen must have kept a close eye on Urahara. Aizen should have found a way to find Urahara in the human world and keep a close eye on him there. Urahara found a really good hiding spot. I know Urahara didn't like Aizen but if they had teamed up at one point to fight, that would be so cool.

In my opinion they are more closer to equals. I believe the real question is which one has benefited more from the other or which one is the more supportive one.

In regards to Urahara and Aizen: Raw power, Aizen. That really requires no explanation. Intelligence: Urahara. While Aizen did have everyone fooled for centuries I honestly think Urahara has a greater mental capacity. Aizen had his own Hyogouku as such a device was necessary to bridging the gap between Shinigami and Hollow, so he could be a being that sits about all, A level above the Soul King, or to be the Soul King himself. His end goal. While for Urahara the Hyougouku was just one of his great projects and most likely have been overshadowed by something else had he not discovered Aizen's activities, and his life was altered. Technique: Aizen, is a Machiavellian, and has hardly ever revealed just how powerful he is. In addition to his personality his sword fits him perfectly, Kyoukasuigetsu is duplicity made reality. Even if he did not fool everyone in his grand ritual I believe that Aizen still would have lied about the power of his sword, so in a straight fight Aizen would just need to release it once and the fight would be over. As the condition is that anyone who sees its release its under its spell. Unohana did notcie something was off with Aizen's corpse, but I think that has something to do with her power as the first Kenpachi(I assume that to be a Kenpachi, ones power must be on another level). Urahara is cautious and there seems to be a disconnect with he and Benihime. I think that he fears her power, so therefore is hesitant to use it to its full potential. So he would be more prone to rely on his intelligence. Now if Urahara was able to activate Bankai it may tip things in his favor, but I think Aizen would kill him before he could really do anything dangerous.

Urahara was always my favourite character in Bleach. Like you, I was looking forward to more confrontation between Urahara and Aizen, since they have become such great rivals. I never thought that Urahara would become a villain (but he'd be a brilliant villain once you think about it), but I did think he would form his own faction to rival Seireitei. We'll never know now. Maybe Tite had plans to explore the rivalry more... I wonder if Tite will get a Battle Angel Alita opportunity, where he'll get another chance to revisit the series and end it in a more satisfying way (not with WSNJ obviously!)

Urahara isn’t the kinda vengeance guy, even at his core, when he gets serious, he doesn’t brag, there’s no vengeance, and I think it’s more fitting that urahara acts like he doesn’t care
