Once upon a time, electric motorcycles had such short range and high MSRPs that only the most devoted of early adopters had a reason to consider owning one. Well, in the past couple years, improvements in range have resulted in electrics now being a viable option for riders who are looking for a greener alternative to internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles, which are relatively dirty compared to four-wheeled road users. So, we’ve taken the 2018 BMW C Evolution scooter and the 2018 Zero DSR as representatives of two different approaches to urban electric motorcycles to see how they stack up for everyday use. Note: This is not our typical comparison where we try to determine the best motorcycle out of a pairing. Rather, we are looking at two different electric bikes to determine their viability as urban transport.

Zero had a demo day at our local dealership, so I got to try out a DSR, FX, and SR. I came away very impressed that these are motorcycles first and foremost, that happen to be electric. I think they’d make excellent commuter bikes, except they’re pricey for that role. In a spread out metro area with as many freeway miles as DFW, range could be an issue without charging at the other end. In short, I like them, and think Zero’s done a really good job on their development, but I’m not quite ready to buy at the current range & price.

Happy to see you guys come to some of the same conclusions I have in research. At some point I'm getting an EV for commute. Getting the M endorsement as an out-of-State license holder is a pain, but some of the things I've noticed: - BMW comes with windscreen, dual disc brakes, more storage. - Zero has more performance - My commute is 15 miles on 55mph city highways; Typically beat rush hour in the morning breaking 100mph but stuck in it going home at 40mph. The BMW seems better application between stock windscreen and low end of highway speeds. - EVs need to figure out a way to allow coast/sail and regen-braking without changing drive modes. On my hybrid it coasts by default, I get around this by putting the car into Manual shift mode (ie tiptronic) to engage a transmission gear -> regen braking. - Zero only offers regen in Eco mode which has clipped performance... have to fiddle with an app to get the bike to open up the throttle *and* have regen. - BMW's default setup is better -- but also less than ideal. You can only do one or the other at any time; but you should *always* be able to pick sail or regen at any time as part of driving an EV or hybrid. Maybe replace the LH clutch or foot shifter with that selection process. An EV without the ability to do either of those at any given moment is hurting itself -- and kinda demonstrates that even Zero is still being mfr'd from the limited viewpoint of Engineers who drive gas powered vehicles.

Chris Till Yes there's a push for E motorcycles, E bikes, E cars, etc. The problem still remains that no one has yet to set up an actual charging station, so, one would have no option but to stay within reach of their home after going X amount of miles out & back, just to recharge. I am however liking a certain model whose name I forgot but, it has a built in lithium battery inside the unit, plus it comes with an extra 2 batteries. It supposedly has some built in tech that draws juice into the main in unit battery from 1 of the 2 that you can plug in. I haven't seen any other models that come with more than 1 battery so, maybe for a lengthier ride, this might be the way to go until someone makes more on road charging stations

JIGSAW 4 EVER c geoffrey Maybe contact your local authority to push them to build chargers more quickly if that’s critical to making them viable for you. I think for me even a low range would be ok for my needs, even without public charging. Unfortunately it depends a lot where you live and what you want to use it for.

The thing with E stuff is that they have no "soul" imo. You can't feel the torque building up when you hit the pedal - it's just there. I love the feeling, when you roll out ur hand, and you feel that buzzing between ur legs, and you know, that it's because you wanted it. It goes up and up and launches u forward. Best feeling ever. You won't get that on E bike/car.
@christill
@christill 6 жыл бұрын
Munga I like the instant torque feeling a lot more personally. My old Yamaha 125 scooter took forever to rev up and actually start moving. Obviously that’s a scooter and not a bike with quicker response. The soul thing. Personally I think they’ve always just been machines as they are now. You could argue that vehicles of the future may have a ‘soul’ in terms of having AI and being able to converse with you. But when people say a machine has a soul, it’s like saying it’s analogue and has a mind of it’s own. It’s unpredictable and unreliable. So really most modern gas bikes have no soul by that way of thinking.
@MajinMunga
@MajinMunga 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying they have a soul like people. I'm just saying, that when you get into a car with V8 you can feel the engine by only reving it up. You won't say the same thing about 1.3 or even 2.5 :D And please try 600cc or 1000cc bike. I bet you will feel the launch instantly :) Especially on 1k. These are wolfes in a sheep's skin. They only look 'a little bigger' then 600/750/900cc, but the difference is huuuuuuuuge.

I live in SF, have the the EVO (since Oct. 17) and love it. I've never believed the sound from my priovious bikes (sports) saved me from idiots in their cars. Regarding the mirrors, they are on pivots with detents, so when I'm gonna split lanes I just fold them in. People regularly lower their windows at stop lights and say how cool it is and want to know range, top speed, charge time, etc. With our overpriced PG&E electricity, it costs $2.75 to charge it for 65 mile range.

With the BMW in the aggressive regen mode, does the brake light come on when you release the throttle and it slows down quickly? If not, that could be a safety issue for drivers following behind you.

BMW: 99 miles on 8.1kWh -> 12.22mi/kWh Zero: 89miles on 7.2kWh -> 12.36mi/kWh Believe both are using Samsung cells at this point. It's a negligible difference imo The BMW costs more per kWh ... but Zero doesn't offer anything between 89 miles and 160miles; a poor decision imo.

@renynzea
@renynzea 6 жыл бұрын
I would have picked the Zero S for this comparison (the S models have more range than the DS models). The base model is $10,995 with 10 miles less range than the BMW, and the extended range model is $13,995 which is $200 more than the BMW but offers more range and performance. Without the charge tank the Zero S has a frunk. It is not as cavernous as the BMW's compartment, but it is useful for carrying a lunch and a drink or two, plus a tire repair kit. The charge tank is only useful if you ride beyond 50% range of the zero, and you have access to a charging station. Otherwise just plug it in to a 120 volt outlet and let it charge overnight. IMO, it looks like you went with the priciest Zero to make the BMW look better on price. It isn't. Zero beats the BMW in every way except the size of its storage compartment. But it still has a storage compartment. If you opt for the charge tank that means you need the Zero to do ranges the BMW flat out isn't capable of. And you can add a Top Box or Side Cases to the zero if you really need the storage.

Thanks for your comment. Just to be clear, we went with the model that Zero had available for us to borrow. Our goal for this video wasn't to show which was the better bike, but rather, we wanted to show two different options for urban electric motorcycles.
@DoctorZisIN
@DoctorZisIN 6 жыл бұрын
Also, there's another charging option they didn't mention. You can get an accessory fast charger from Zero for your home or workplace for $600, and you can use both, the fast charger and regular outlet together to reduce charging time. Not quite as fast as the charge tank but a lot less expensive. I also think that there are 3rd. party fast chargers that would work on the Zero for even less.
@renynzea
@renynzea 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but you would need to run the fast charger on another circuit. I blew out a breaker the other day cause I tried to use a small air compressor while my bike was charging. The zero pulls pretty close to the 15 amps most circuits are rated at.
@DoctorZisIN
@DoctorZisIN 6 жыл бұрын
True, that's a drawback. I like the idea of e-bikes but in all honesty, they should be cheaper than gas bikes. After all they do have less moving parts, which is a plus for the owner, but also the manufacturer, less range and less performance overall (except for torque), and the big inconvenience of charging times.Batteries should be cheap and easily exchangeable so you could have one charging at home, at least.
@renynzea
@renynzea 6 жыл бұрын
They can be cheaper. I've heard someone compare the S model to a 900 cc bike, which seems about right considering the torque and suspension. Most gas bikes in that range are going to cost you $10,000 to $12,000 out the door once you factor in Tax, Title, License, dealer fees, etc. When you figure in the fuel, insurance difference, and maintenance an electric bike could end up with a lower cost per mile. Just depends on how much you plan to ride.

When Mr. Fusion® powerplants hit the market, electric vehicles will be king. Until then, I'm positive that there will be neutral and negative opinions, with people taking polar oppositions in this charged debate. But, whether alternately or directly, watt we really have to remember is that electricity, like love, sometimes hertz, but usually helps make life better for us when we offer less resistance.

I think the BMW isn't all that expensive compared to it's most direct competitors. Maxiscooters with that kind of trim are all in the same region. Sure 15k euro is a lot for any motorcycle, but it isn't that much more expensive than a Tmax TechMax, Burgman 650 or a BMW C-600 GT. And with the cost of a full charge being about the same as 2 liters of petrol over here, the 500-2000 euro premium for the C-evolution really isn't all that much. For comparison, my C-Evolution gets 130-160km on a 4 euro charge. While my 50cc moped gets around 90-120km for the same expense in petrol. My old Aprilia SRV850 would get about 40-60km for that amount of petrol. Added bonus in my case is the free-for-staff level 2 chargers at work, so I ride for free during workdays while I still get a 19ct/km reimbursement for commuting expenses.

Krikket Warrior, well he did state a 120hz wall socket , for Europe and Asia/ middle East we have 240/250 sockets so we charge the the battery in 4.5h. I have the zero SR 13.3 2016 model with charge tank and it takes me 3h to full from 0% ( using LVL 2 charger ,not wall socket ) and around 5h using wall socket from 2-5% to full. Note : the level 2 charger heads in EU and middle East are different from the zero motorcycle is based upon ( U.S.) so you can't use a level 2 charger with a preinstalled cable and have to find a level 2 charger with a empty socket to put your own cable
@BallisticBreakfast
@BallisticBreakfast 6 жыл бұрын
Mansour Al Najjar, (I am happy your on two wheels brother, stay safe out there) What is the range of the Zero, real world use. I can do 250 miles on a tank. What is your top speed? I have reached well over 125, on a closed coarse. How much was your Zero, with it's extra (I think it's an extra $$ for the LVL 2 charger?) I spent $1700.00 US, yes it's used, Kinda the point =) I just don't see it. City cars ok, but bikes? Gas powered bikes for the most part sip the fuel, 40+ is fairly common. And again I don't have a loud bike, but at least it does not sound like a toy. More power to those of you who can get behind this E-powered....whatever. What if it's cold? The battery life is effected correct? What if it's hot? The battery life is effected correct? What about the infrastructure? Quick charging stations? (3 hours is still 3 hours) Again more power to those who choose to follow this path, you will need it. I just don't see any of these e-powered bikes "taking off" yet. Will they sell, oh yea. But a lot of us that ride like all the sounds and smells that come with riding a motorcycle. Listen to a Ducati, a Harley, the Kawasaki H2. Then listen to your e-bike. All of us over here listening to the music of the motor just don't get it. It is a symphony of metal, oil, fire, water and glycol that stirs our emotions and drives our passion. It is the gear heads drug, and like any good drug it is additive and pleasurable. Something like that is hard to give up.

Krikket Warrior , For the real world it is as stated in the website, but due to my weight I can say is ( for city usage stoppage from lights and heavy traffic / slow speed below 80km/h you can using non sport mode you can get a 300km easy) but due to most of my paths tends to use highway and 120km pathways I tend to take the battery into a 120-140km range. * Maximum long range I was able to do was city to city in a single change was 130km in highway speed at 120km ( 0 stop or slowdowns ) ** As for top speed it's limited for model year is 163-165km/h ( electronically) As for spending : It cost me a total of 25k USD including air freight to get it to middle East becouse , That's bikes + level 2 charger + delivery + air freight + document clearing + other document clearing As for the question into : temps My main climate is hot , so that's my main concern , the battery is not good when it hits 40c+ ( As per zero manual) And the other issue when it's cold outside it's easier to floor it as the motor can be played around as it can cool down faster ( since it's air cooled ) As for cold temps , their is no issue in my area as the battery can manage till -20c and work properly and don't need preheat starting As for battery being affected = zero gives you a gurantte for some ( need to recheck my paperwork ) years and also for the motor. The infrastructure is not needed on quickcharger , as quickchargercan only be used by ( energica motorcycle - Italian electricmotrcycle - way more expensive) , zero zero is currently limited to level 2 charging and level 1 ( wall ) *** As for your point not taking off , I get it , I have both zero and a Kawasaki z800 ( with some modes on it , for long runs - 600km + ), but note that in Europe they are starting with zones that are baning with any petrol / diesel veichel to enter so an alternative must be used , and battery technology can be upgraded to a point or an alternative green power source would hopefully be found later on be found. **** Notes : * when I ride my I weight 150kg ( non including gear ) ( that's 2x that average what's zero test cycle ) so my bike can manage much ** was doing a test trial from one city to another that was to test the city electric charging station ( had alot of time in that period ) *** never buy any commercial cable to use instead of zero motorcycle charging cable as I tested it out and it took less than 2 seconds to burn that cable , also energica ( the Italian brand ) has better and higher speeds but kills of range , but you have to shell out alot more money instead ( same principle as Ducati) , Also note , that zero placed that level 2 charging limitation so that not the battery to be killed early and can live to around 20 years easily **** in some point in time we have to give up the fossil fuel , but if people just jeep burning up all that resource which is also used in other products then everything else will become expensive ( like the crisis that is happening in Brazil becouse of desiel spike price ).
@BallisticBreakfast
@BallisticBreakfast 6 жыл бұрын
When the US starts "zones that are banning with any petrol / diesel vehicles" we may see a sales jump here in the US. But don't see this market changing just yet, tell then going to ride my gas powered bike. compairison 2004 Yamaha YZF 600 R = 208 mile trip = 4 hours Zero = 208 mile = 4 hours for the ride and add a minimum 6 hours charging = 10 hours Side note You state "I have both zero and a Kawasaki z800" proving my point. Gas is better, if it wasn't you would only have the zero. The fact that you have both just shows, the tech just isn't there, the range isn't there. Your not going to convince me otherwise right now, batteries are a poor idea for a power source right now. When the battery dies, and it will it. Land fill? Not able to recycle are we? Engine can be recycled, used over and over. Fuel Cell tech, it is more what we as a planet are used to. Pull up, fill up and go. No harmful by product. It will not take 3 hours to fill. The range will be the same if not better then gas. It seams to be a far better fuel idea then to try to make the entire population of 7.6 Billion to change(yes I know not everyone has a car/motorcycle). We can't even get along with our trades, religion or any other number of things that this planet has to deal with. It's a great start to see the ban on petrol / diesel vehicles, but give us a better options then a battery. Stay safe!

I agree. E-bikes should be cheaper than gas. After all they offer less performance and range. Less moving parts, simpler motors, simpler manufacturing and so on. But like you said you can get a used, very usable, practical gas bike for a tenth of the price of an e-bike. It's good that they're out there and for some specific lifestyles may be perfect, like someone who works form home and just makes small runs here and there around a busy, traffic-packed, noisy, smog-filled big city. I live in the West of the USA, with wide open roads, little traffic and miles and miles to go, hot in the day and cold at night deserts, few stations... worst possible place for e-bikes.

Fwiw been riding a Zero SR to work about half of the time. 50 miles one way commute. Saves 10 to 45 minutes over the car in traffic as any motorcycle will. I'm saying it's as fast as the best of bikes for this. Two sets of Pirelli diablo rossos and an on board charger which was replaced free on warranty is all I had to do for parts. Electricity for that would cost about $350 due to free charging at work. Compare it to a bike that gets 50 mpg and $3.00 gas which comes to $1500. Maintenance costs? Will changes? Zero. Valve adjusting? Zero. Coolant? Zero. Clutch? Zero. Battery? Zero. Fuel system? Zero. Air and oil filters? Zero. Chain lube, adjusting, replacement, cleaning? Zero. Brakes are wearing much slower due to Regen braking. The seat and handlebar grips might be the first things to wear out. 😁

600 lb electric scooter should be able to go 200 miles on a charge. If the Zero put another 100 lbs of their batteries in saddle bags I'd bet their Zero would go over 200 miles. It is no wonder that electric motorcycles or E-scooters are taking such a long time to get market share and acceptance. That BMW is just plain goofy looking with all the plastic and why is it 600 lbs? Maybe it is using old recycled NicCadmium batteries from wrecked Prius Hybrids.

Edward Lorentz people with a long commute love it. People who want the smoothness of a six cylinder BMW but who don't want to pay 30 000 dollars. People who want the effortless roll on of a Goldwing, but who don't want a 900 pound bike. People who can't stand idling their bike for 5 minutes before riding anywhere. People who have better things to do than pump gas. Lots of people.
@specialed5098
@specialed5098 6 жыл бұрын
gasdive LONG COMMUTE??? It only goes 60 to 70 miles. Is that long ??? And when you compare it against a BMW or GOLDWING you are comparing it out of their league. I don't know if you know anything about motorcycles but I do and there are 100's of new bikes less than $10,000 and you say they are selling them? Where I never see them at rallies, on the road or in any cities in the USA
@gasdive
@gasdive 6 жыл бұрын
Edward Lorentz they go 220 miles. Assuming you recharge while at work, that's a 400 mile daily commute range. You may not count that as a long commute because you're a special snowflake, but that's longer than 99.9% of commutes. Even if it was only 60 miles. That's still a 120 mile daily commute. More than 4 times the average commute distance in the USA. 600 000 USA commuters travel more than 50 miles, so that's less than 1% of workers. So, yeah, a long commute. Oh, and BTW, I'm not comparing it out of its league. I've ridden both. The Zero has far better roll on pickup than a 'wing and is far far far smoother than the 6 cylinder BMW. You might not like it, but it's true.

People in cars often have the radio loud enough to drown out the noise of an ambulance siren. They weren't going to hear you in the first place. All that loud pipes do is annoy the adjacent neighbourhood. Much like ricer fart cans and dumb loud car subwoofers do. It's your arse on that bike, you have to make sure it stays in once piece. Imbeciles driving SUVs certainly aren't going to do it for you. Just look at all the stuff they put on cars these days to prevent drivers from rear ending people. Why? Because people are too damn stupid to pay proper attention in traffic, distracted by cellphones or in-car entertainment touch screen bullshit. If you need a loud pipe to avoid getting killed in traffic, you either need to ride more safely or move away from whatever Floridian clusterfuck you ride in.

I tried to ride behind some Harley's and use their noise but they go so Damm slow it's boring and they are always hitting the brakes unexpectedly those guys are a menace. Save it for Sunday when the chrome shine will be more effective parked outside your local coffee shop. Buuahaha

Batteries still aren't where they need to be to make electric bikes practical. the only way at the moment to increase range is to add more battery cells, and that adds loads of weight which is not good for motorcycles, not to mention the fact that when you run out you have to charge for a way longer time than it would take to pump a few gallons of gas. Also this video is garbage and has nothing insightful about the character of these bikes, unless the character is that these are toys for Californians who want to look environmentally friendly.

They are far superior if all you do is commute on a bike. The range isn't an issue then, they're super quiet and smooth, they have virtually no maintenance, and you never have to stop for gas. You just plug it in when you get home each night. You can even put it inside without worrying about oil or gas leaks.
