Join me on a solo urban kayaking adventure along New York City’s stunning Harlem River. The journey begins at Inwood Hill Park in Manhattan where I head out on the Hudson River, eventually making my way into Spuyten Duyvil Creek and the Harlem River. As I paddle, we see Big C Rock, a landmark location that was originally painted by the Columbia University Rowing Team in 1952, multiple impressive bridges, Sherman Creek, and other urban sights and sounds. As usual, I had the river to myself and enjoyed every minute of the natural beauty mixed with the hustle and bustle of the city around me. I ran into a bit of a challenge getting off of the river, but with a little creativity and flexibility, I overcame the adversity.

I just found your channel a week ago and your content is great! I grew up on the Hudson Line so I've rolled along the Harlem River hundreds of times, but it's so great seeing it from a kayakers perspective! You definitely don't see the "C" from the train! I was on the river once when I was really young. We were on my cousin's boat. Launched from the Sound and came down the Harlem River and up to Tarrytown on the Hudson. We actually got stuck for quite some time near that Amtrak bridge at the mouth because the drawbridge wasn't open!

So that first Cove that you pulled into the building in front of you is the NYC Transit Kingsbridge Bus Depot and that is where I started my career back in 2007. Just beyond that cove when you leave it on the right is the Sanitation Garage and past that where the guy was working on boom lift is NYC Transit 207th street train yard where the 1 and A line go for repairs, they also are considered the Major Overhaul shop, where they do a lot of overhaul repairs, upgrades, and so forth, they actually just installed that entire seawall perimeter to prevent flooding of the train yard during heavy rain and hurricanes. The train depot is MetroNorth Highbridge yard where they do lots of car appearance work. Further down from where you got out is the 145st bridge and right next that is my new bus depot that I work in.

Hey Matt, I lived in NYC for 20 years until 2002 and kayaked several times on the mighty Hudson River. Once starting in Tarrytown in Westchester and the other time farther up near the Catskills. That's where we rented from a place that gave us no guidance whatsoever and found ourselves dealing with the wake of a massive tanker! Thank you so much for bringing back those wonderful memories of gliding on the water while surrounded by the activity of America's busiest city. And congratulations on figuring out a way to bypass the Henry Hudson Parkway!

The high bridge is a aquaduct walking bridge that recently opened back up. Back in day it would bring fresh drinking water from Kencico dam. That pointy structure is part of the old reservoir water aquaduct system that would empty out into collecting system around Bryant park in central manhattan behind the ny library.

That section you traversed from the Hudson through Spuyten Duyvil to the Harlem River has a crazy tidal range and insane currents. I used to live there in Bronx with my parents on 188th Street and Grand Concourse. I would walk or cycle to the 204th Street Bridge and walk into Manhattan. Inwood and 204th was great area for Irish bars and Irish gift shoppes. I remember walking to Riverdale ice skating rink and Van Courtland Park. There was an old family graveyard of the Van Courtland Family. The grave stones were ancient! I swear one day I was on a day hike into the park and I saw a fellow up ahead who was dressed in a black frock coat and tall top hat. He looked like a ghost!! He then disappeared in the short distance. Creepers! That was 1965. Like it was yesterday! I had such a fear of water then that I would cringe when I went over the bridge. When I was older in 30’s I worked at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital I would bicycle to work from Bedford Park and Webster Ave. a lot of hills! I was in school of nursing at Lehman College at same time. I did not have car till I was 35 years old. I got my drivers license in Sitka Alaska. Sitka faced the Pacific Ocean. I friend of my wife used to kayak in the bay and ocean. I thought he was out of his mind! Now I think back and am very jealous. I met some Aleut natives. These were real people of the sea. Of course we had Tlingket natives too and Inuits. Worked with Indian Health Service with my wife then girlfriend. I see you have girlfriend does she Kayak? I bought Ruth a green Eddyline Sandpiper 130 like mine. We will Kayak together! She said she dreamed we kayaked in Alaska together the other night! Hope it happens! We will have to drive back to do it! Being nurses, we could both get temporary job assignments up there and make it so! I listened to a woman’s book about her Kayak trip from Katchican to Skagway along the Inside passage of Alaska south east panhandle. The book is on Audible. I great listen with Ruth in the car! Wow I can sure talk huh!

I have to agree - that was an amazing exit 👍👍-so glad you and your gear were able to squeeze through. I was trying to guess what cross street you would be at when you exited- I did guess somewhere in the 150’s - I was able to guess because you are excellent at describing landmarks along both shores of the Harlem River. Thank you again for a wonderful journey along the Harlem River-I really enjoyed that you traveled under all those bridges- we used to call the bridge that is named The University Heights Bridge the 207 St Bridge because when you cross it from the Bronx side you end up on 207 St in Inwood- I grew up on the east side of the Bronx near the Zoo but my husband grew up in the West Bronx off Fordham Road- so when we were dating we often would walk from Fordham Road across the 207St bridge and then back.(just because we liked walking across the bridge) There was a big Pathmark store on the Manhattan side of the bridge, my husband worked there after school ( he still has excellent grocery packing skills- acquired at the 207 St Pathmark.) I read about that cliff in "The Basketball Diaries" by Jim Carroll. He called it "The Cut" because railroad tracks cut through the rock, making it a "dicey" (lol) dash to the jumping-off points. That apartment building was not there. Maybe they have put a stop to the jumping. A guy I know said that his brother used to jump from the rock in the 1960's when it was VERY dirty. They came up with toilet paper on their heads and got boils. It looks to be very cleaned up. BTW, you set excellent example for caution and safety. These videos are great travelogues of seldom-seen views of NYC. The Harlem "river" is actually kind of a bust. The river was widened, deepened, and straightened to allow ships to circumnavigate Manhattan, but the only vessel that really does is The Circle Line. I (happily) note the absence of industrial docklands.

I row open water on occasion mostly Nantucket Sound. Lots of big ferry traffic. The large wake from a big ship is usually pretty tame if you stay in deep water, they become breaking waves in the shallows that can fill or flip your boat. I lived in Queens for a decade in the 90’s. I really enjoy watching your adventures thru places I’ve been only adjacent to just watching some of it passing by from the hwy. I was curious about the cylindrical pylon looking water defense. On the satellite map I saw that it’s a wall protecting the 207th street railway yard. Thanks for sharing with us these great views and be safe out there, you’re going to hopefully inspire other kayakers to venture out there!

In case you didn't know: The Marble Hill neighborhood (Where the C rock is located) is actually part of the Borough of Manhattan. Marble Hill originally formed the Northern tip of Manhattan. The original Spuyten Duyvil passed North of Marble Hill. In the late 19th century, a ship channel was constructed between Spuyten Duyvil and the Harlem River making Marble Hill into an island. In 1913 the original waterway was filled in, joining Marble Hill to the mainland and the Bronx, but it is still considered part of the Borough of Manhattan.
