Urbanism of huge residential expansions. What needs to be built to make them good? Public transport, commerce, jobs and everything else. In the city, I'm building a new commercial center with an urban railway.

Altengrad is a time-progression Cities: Skylines series where I build a Central European city, located until 1989 in the Eastern Bloc, taking inspiration from Germany, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary. The series starts around the year 1920 and slowly advances forward in time, which means the city will naturally evolve all the way to modern times. The city is not a recreation of any one real-life city or country, but it takes inspiration from them.
PC specs are in the channel's About page. No, the game doesn't run like this in real time. Cinematics are recorded slow and made faster in editing.

Information about sources:
My primary sources are in Czech and Slovak, because I understand it and I can easily borrow books, search theses, articles or old TV programmes. This gives me information about Czechoslovakia. After learning or confirming something, I search whether or not it's applicable to also East Germany, Poland and Hungary through online articles or videos, but also sometimes English books that I can see through library access. Although some sources pop up from those other countries first. I don't research the Soviet Union and other Eastern Bloc countries, since that is not where the series is from. I also don't focus on political theory but rather the reality.
Major sources:
Books:
(I) "Automobilismus a česká společnost" (Cars and Czech society)
(II) "Šedesátá léta v architektuře očima pamětníků" (Sixties in Architecture through the eyes of witnesses)
(III) "Paneláci 1,2" (Prefabs, parts 1 and 2)
TV:
(IV) Archive of the Czech/Slovak/Czechoslovak TV and cinema news (various programmes, news clips or shows from relevant periods)
(V) Recent Czech TV programmes like historie.cs and others
Other:
(VI) Museum visits, historical exhibitions or lectures
(VII) Looking at various historical photos, for example from pastvu.com, fortepan.hu, old maps
(VIII) Various online articles about the places shown to get the very basic numbers or history

@@matuskriska8361 I mean, trams _can be_ noisy lmao. If you've been next to tram tracks, you also know they can cause the ground to slightly vibrate. It's one thing to bitch about a mixed-use building in suburban car-oriented America, it's completely different to not be super-hyped about light rail going in front of your window (and for a good reason!).

There's similar types of situations in west German cities as well. Here in Cologne we have Chorweiler, but for that estate (which was supposed to house 100k people I think) two transit connections, S-Bahn and Stadtbahn, were built. It's still getting expanded today step by step and the transit is not a problem thanks to both good connections, but it's sadly not really the richest district...

Here in Sweden there was plans for suburbs to become satillite cities. But the need became lower in the early 70's and the plans were shelved with the economic crisis of the mid-late 70's. Angered here in Gothenburg for example only got 54 000 citizens today when it was planned for over 150 000. The town centre was scaled down to a small shopping centre that was finnished 8 years after people started to move in.

Absolutely beautiful addition to the legendary series of Altengrad. The worst thing about it is that it always ends, no matter how long the epiaodes get! Looking forward to the further expansion and some more highway action. Also, I sort of masochistically want to see further demolition of well established parts of the city, as I know you'll pull it off nicely! By the way, some areas might already deserve a little bit of tree growth, no? 😉

Ursynów before metro was almost 100% reliant on buses, as the first parts of Warsaw metro were opened in the 1995 (building started in 1983). The history of it begins in the 60's, when the decision of its building was made, and first blocks were already standing in 1976 - that shows how decision processes were horrendously long and inpractical. Same problems occured with transportation. There is an iconic TV series 'Alternatywy 4' which depicts the reality of living in Ursynów at the very beggining (it's a comedy but as almost every comedy from back then - it's almost as in the real life). Famous quote from it says: 'I've been waiting for a bus for 40 minutes now so it should be here soon'. Buses were led on very long lines which stretched not only through Ursynów but through the whole Warsaw (it was much smaller back then obviously, still pretty long). There were oficially 4 parts of Ursynów: Ursynów Północny/Południowy (Northern/Southern Ursynów) and Natolin Północny/Południowy (Nrthrn/Sthrn Natolin) and each one had its own bus lines. They were independent from each other, which made transport more efficient as there was no need to circle around the new district but they took you straight north, to the city centre. Interestingly, on some avenues such as Marszałkowska and Aleja Niepodległości, even though some bus lines gone through the same path, they had different stops (eg. one line stopped on one stop, second on another, whilst still on the same street). That way lines serviced different parts of the district which made it more convenient - there were tens of thousands of residents in Ursynów back then so if there was one line which stopped at each stop it would be horrible. But even if it sound good-ish, the reality was pretty harsh. Blocks were erected chaotically, like there were blocks, then a huge field, blocks again, field etc. Streets were named unintuitively and ambiguos so bus drivers didn't know how to drive there at first. Over time they learned their routes just by directions (there I turn left, then straight for while, right, left and here I am!). It was quite a mess (it's Poland after all...). As 'Alternatywy 4' shown, buses were poorly scheduled and used for transportation not only for humans, but for furniture, fridges etc. as cars were not popular and hard to get back then. Ursynów nowadays is pretty interesting place to see. There is SGGW (Warsaw University of Life Sciences) with adorable old campus, a metro line, Wilanów with the old Jan III Sobieski residence nearby, lot of new developements, cafes, bars, night clubs and so on. Still it heavily relies on buses, but they are now emptier and have more local character, bringing people to metro lines and distributing them in the district. The history of it shows how such a big district was managed without a metro or even trams. (I wrote this monstrosity after I read a history article on Ursynów from Warsaw's Public Transport magazine from September 2019. I'll link it but unfortunately it's only in Polish: www.wtp.waw.pl/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2019/09/iZTM-09-19.pdf )

I love your series because you provide such interesting backgrounds that become even more vivid through your projects! On the subject of U-Bahn vs. S-Bahn that you mentioned: I'm sure you know the U-5 line in Berlin. This is the perfect hybrid, as it runs to a certain extent underground (near Alexanderplatz) and in the direction of the prefabricated housing areas, of which it connects several of them, completely above ground. Would also fit well!

I love this series' focus on urban history. I'd like to suggest maybe adding more trees to these estates down the line as "time" passes by to show it maturing, also panel housing with trees look very nice after the trees are big enough to provide shade as opposed to the grassy wasteland

aah, i hoped you'll include Poznań in the examples, since northern districts (such as Osiedle Sobieskiego, Osiedle Chrobrego or Osiedle Batorego) are also great example of such expansions also, often referred to as Poznan's Bedroom, with central tram line called PST (Poznan Fast Tram or Pre-metro line). It's quite bizzare story, because the districts were built in the 70's and 80's and the tram line construction also began in the 70's but due to financial problems and constant building companies shuffle it was finished only in 1997 and only in a fraction. Great majority of that line - which supposed to cut entire city on the north-south axis wasn't built, despite initial projects. For almost 20 years people have to move with busses. It's unimaginable today, because PST daily ridership is about 150k. Anyway, i love your works. I love how you analyze and present urbanistic ideas hid behind those big slab communist districts. I've lived in one for half of my life and i have to say i'm really fond of it.

You should add more water features. One example was a highway that was built over a stream. They then removed the highway. Turned it into a pedestrian walkway with the original stream. It had trees and plants at different hights. Vines etc... One place you can do this would be the railway. You should also look at the square you built and the pathways as the people walk into the planters

You could also use it as an area for animals to gather around. For bord or squirell spotting. Also add more tall trees in the more open areas.

I really like your philosophy that you bring to these which is trying to create something that feels realistic but also pleasantly detailed. A few ideas: The area around the rail line leading up to the new district itself is rather barren when i'm not sure it would make a ton of sense in real life. Maybe some smaller suburbs would fit there with a small train station to help connect them all up?

I recently stumbled upon your channel and was surprised at how detailed your cities are. As a resident of Russia, I can say that you very accurately conveyed the entourage of communist buildings. Please look at the intersection of Krasnoyarsky Rabochiy Street and Michurin Street in the city of Krasnoyarsk. They are at different levels and one passes over the other with the help of a bridge, which creates an interesting effect. I would like to see something similar in Altengrad. Also during the communist era, propaganda inscriptions on the roofs of buildings were widespread. Not necessarily political (for example, in my hometown there are still buildings with inscriptions "matches are not a toy for children", "carelessness is the cause of the fire") Hello from Russia!

I know the idea of the series is to be build it closely realistic, but is there any chance for you to build in your city a district, that would perfectly follow the rules of "city in the sky"? Like a living district somewhere close to the city centre, which would be perfectly build with all the sky paths for people and to have many levels? Since it's just being inspired by the real-life architecture style, and being extremely 1 to 1 copy, it would be really nice to see how you personally would implement all the ideas of the "soviet" socialist-modernistic style.

I had a vague plan for a new series where I'd just build a fictional "perfect" modernist city, but with CS2 around the corner I won't do that, but when CS2 reaches the customization level, then maybe. But I really don't want to add that here.
