With the African Nightcrawlers enjoying the summer temps it is time to test out some methods of keeping the bag warm all winter long. First test is adding coffee grounds with the food to create a high nitrogen area. The worms can always escape towards the bottom of the Urban Worm Bag.

I love getting the coffee grounds from our coffee shops around town! This will be fun to see how it keeps the heat up this winter!🪱🪱🪱

The coffee shops near me normally don't have any grounds to give away as we have a few local gardens that take them all. But I know a lot of places keep bags just like that so people can grab them.

We normally put coffee grounds in our hot compost and I keep forgetting to feed them to the worms. They are definitely going to be something I turn to to keep my outdoor bins warmer through the winter. ~ Sandra

I tested a system with just coffee grounds and cardboard and it got so hot the worms were fleeing. The big bag will give room for them to run if it actually does heat up.

I'm sorry to hear about your hamster. 😢 Coffee shops are great! I moved out into the country where there is no Starbucks presence, and asked a local shop if they would be cool collecting some grounds for me. They were all too happy to oblige! Came in with a 5 gallon bucket, and they were like "bring in a another one and we can fill them both of them within the week!" So I did. Easy 10 gallons! I give that to my composter typically, but then that'll go to the worms once it's finished. But at least I never have to worry about hungry worms. 😁

He was over 2 years old so and was showing signs that he was going. As it came to the end I really wanted to hold him while he passed but everything I read said you shouldn't do that as they will be afraid and stressed. In the end he was curled up in a pile of soft bedding and passed peacefully. Glad the local coffee shops are collecting the grounds. Starbucks has taken over near me and they give the grounds to a couple local small groups.

Thanks, he was a good hamster and was over 2 years old and was really slowing down. He passed peacefully.

How do you like the 2.0 bag compared to the original? Any problems with the zipper?

The 2.0 bag is a good upgrade over the first one. I like the dual zipper up top and with the bottom section it has a funnel to prevent things from falling into the zipper. Highly recommend the new bag!

@WorldComposting I've had a channel for 3 years now and just watched the Worm world explode with interest. Isn't that wonderful! And yes, the worms have drawn together a wonderful community❤️🪱❤️
