People in the US can look up the USGS soil survey to read reports about what types of soils, subsoils, and other surface materials are present on any property in the US. This is done with a combination of satellite surveys and spot test digs to assign properties to each area they see from space.

seems most of the arid dry poor soil areas you speak of were once lush green pasture lands when we allowed nature to do what it wants, then we came in and took out all the large grazing animals (buffalo/cows) killed them off, fenced them in, beaver pelts, wolf mitigation etc, and there went the landscape. People are doing amazing work being the beaver (making swale systems) and grazing cattle feeding native grasses with seeds and before you know it, back to eden.

Vegetables won't grow well in forest soil most vegetables do well with a 50/50 bacteria to fungi ratio. Forest soil is pretty much 100% fungal. Brassicas do best in predominately bacterial soil. Hope that helps!

So far so good. The only crop that hasn't been great has been onions. We added a lot of compost though and more this year.

I bought 23 acres in 2009. One 15 by 25 garden spot was the only decent soil. I've obsessively controlled and harvester erosion and used soil building plants to Create approximately 1.5 acres of incredible soil. 14 years is a long time but the incredible quality of the soil and the lesson I've learned make it worth it

Closed up tunnels, needs wind to help plants flourish. (Resistance) Use copper antennas too.

A dairy cow with calf is what you need. You actually don't need much room for grazing. Just bring in hay bales. Cows drop so much manure it's incredible. Within a few years they will turn all your unproductive land into very productive land.

If I'm bringing in hay bales, I might as well buy milk and dairy from my buddy.

@@offgridcurtisstone It'll cost you a lot less to keep your own, and you get the benefit of soil generation. Hay is cheap where I am. It costs me less to feed my cow per month than it would to buy my dairy from the grocery store for one week.

@@offgridcurtisstone An ordinary cow would give about eight times as much milk as one family could possibly use. Plus cows tie you down having to be there on schedule twice a day, every day without fail, just to do the milking. And cows develop problems that require veterinarians on an irregular and expensive basis. Nobody is guaranteed veterinary presence including for calf labor and delivery in case of societal collapse. Calves grow up, then you need another bull session to get another calf after months of waiting or else all the falderal of artificial insemination. If there is radioactive fallout infesting the planet, you will need a reliable deep well with a deep pump. How many gallons per minute can you get out of a well deeper than 50 ft?

How do you handle not having bees in your greenhouse? What about too much moisture? Did you have a dehumidifier? What about the airflow? I have a hard time with this. For example, I wanted to grow vine fruits like all sorts of squashes, cucumbers, melons but there was all kinds of mildew on the plants.

@@offgridcurtisstone I didn't know what to do because my greenhouse is not a standard shape (L shape). So, I decided to cut the bubble wrap and greenhouse plastic and clamp it inside against the cow fence arch of my greenhouse. That way, the bees can get in, I'll have some wind going through and hopefully will diminish the condensation. I might have to add a dehumidifier just the same. I'll see.

We all have the same 24 hours in a day. I came to the same conclusion as yourself about what I want to spend my time doing. Raising anything other than chickens wasn't on the list.

No. It's useless. Wind in general is a waste of time for most systems.

This is one of the warmest climates in Canada. Only the lower mainland is better - and you would need MILLIONS to buy into any of that.

Technically, Texada Island and Victoria are the warmest at a zone 8, however, their summers are only warm at best. I'll take a winter if I can get a hot summer.
