We discuss the next subclass in the series from the Player's Handbook: the Death Domain Cleric! This subclass gets some interesting abilities... find out what we think of this subclass! I want to play a multiclass life/death domain cleric. My character would be a split personality with one being a lawful good life domain cleric and the other being a chaotic evil death domain cleric. Still haven't figured out the trigger to make them switch from one to the other yet. But whoever is in charge, they can hear the other personality in their mind.

The proficiency with martial weapons draws me to this subclass. It's just so quirky, you can definitely make a non evil character pretty easy. Generally in the realm of a gatekeeper for death

Sort of like the Grave cleric who 'watches over the line between life and death'. You could flavor your cleric as a servant of a death god, sent to put down undead, i.e. the priest in a haunting horror movie except actually competent, for example. Or your god could've sent you to punish a meddlesome wizard who has been causing ramifications they don't understand, like Asclepius did (the doctor who resurrected the dead, and Hades asked Zeus to stop Asclepius from 'stealing his subjects'). You could have a nice contrast between two traditionally 'villainous' archetypes.

Exactly - Death is a natural part of the cycle of life, it's not inherently evil. The natural prejudice against being "death domain" you'd face would make for great RP

I just started playing as a goliath Death Domain cleric, and even after just one session with him, I love it. I'm not playing him as evil/villainous, per se. Instead, he just sees death as an inevitability, and doesn't understand why anyone would waste perfectly good resources by burying or burning a corpse. He sees necromancy as the most efficient use of life itself, to the point where he gets mad if a party member destroys an enemy's head when killing it, because that's "a waste of a good corpse!" But the combo of being a cleric who can still support and heal the party, but also get in for necrotic smackdown damage, has been very fun to play!

Death domain is such a menacing and cool name. I haven’t heard of villainous subclasses before, but I play cleric, and I might choose death domain for my next character

Good stuff guys, I play one Wood Elf Death cleric for a campaign and it was a lot of fun. I just want to add few more synergy the class have with touch of death. First, you can use it with spiritual weapon, a bonus action that let you still have a melee attack for more chances of land it or just spam cantrip from the back lines and use your “smite” when your spiritual weapon hit. Second, you can use it with vampiric touch, letting you deal tons of necrotic damage and heal you a good amount. Just a lv6 you already have 2 uses per short rest, that’s add a lot of damage and let you focus on the support role with your core spells.

I didn't even think about using Spiritual Weapon as a conduit for Touch of Death. Thank you so much for that. I've been getting up close and using it this whole time.

I made a death domain cleric but she is all about pastels and lolita like clothes. She worships Kelemvor. I haven't tried her yet but we'll see how it goes.

I play a death cleric that I built kind of inspired by the way the forces of life and death are portrayed in Deathless by Catherynne Valente. Neither is all good or all evil; life can be selfish and cruel and death can be merciful and kind.

Literally how I want to play my character. I’m new to DnD but when I thought about making a character I immediately wanted him to be about death. I wanted someone like Nico from Percy Jackson

Death domain tends to be evil but can be made as LG or LN. Remember, death domain does not rip off your general cleric abilities. It only adds more destructive forces to it. For example, you can make a death domain cleric who values the balance between the order and chaos. And since most games tends to be chaotic, you can play as LG most of time.

I have a LN half-orc death cleric. He was rescued by the cult of Myrkul and now he wanders the world on behalf of the cult to punish those who try to use magic to defeat/cheat/escape death - specifically necromancers, vampires and liches.

They dont need to be evil. Take a look at Diablo necromancer klass lore if want to kniw how.

Got a brand new player to dnd. He wants to play a voodoo gypsy woman. We are gonna go death domain cleric. Dunno what you guys are thinking but I'm seeing tonnes of RP being a death cleric. Just gotta flavour it the right way. His holy symbol ofcourse is gonna be a black magic doll

GM Playing a dragon born (of all things) NPC cleric of the raven queen to help out my party while lacking personality. They are brand new, but I can explain it away anyway. Cant decide if life, grave or death yet. I wanna encourage the druid to help heal. Only other is a warlock. Doing research. Good vids.

My campaign will have Dark versions of Clerics and Paladins, so this has the clerics covered, now I’ve got to look for a Dark Paladin subclass. These characters will be skeletons working for the main bad guy. And he is their god they worship!

I actually made a character once that was an experiment of a dracolich, where they put a piece of a long dead god inside of her, and that's the source of her Cleric abilities.

If a favored soul sorcerer/ death cleric multiclass character casts a necromantic cantrip and quickens another necromantic cantrip, would he hit two targets twice each?

You could find a group through something like fantasy grounds, roll20, or reddit. You could always get the D&D starter set and sell your friends on the concept as well if they are into gaming or RPGs (video games or tabletop). Good Luck! Thanks for watching!

One way that might help you convince friends it's worth trying a game is to let them know right away that there are different ways to play D&D. Do they like writing or telling stories? Roleplay! Do they like video games where they kill things? Combat! Do they like feeling progress via rewards? Loot all the things! Whatever they enjoy doing in games, there's probably a way to accommodate that in D&D.

I got me a death cleric focused on removing all undead from the world. "Whats dead should stay dead". She's a kenku and kicked some ass. Very scary to play against though....👌

Interesting... your death cleric believes dead should stay dead, while my death cleric believes burning or burying corpses is a waste of resources, and reanimation is more efficient. Same subclass, polar opposite philosophies 😂

@@IceMetalPunk One of my favorite things about dnd. Same class/subclass? Doesn't matter. Can be very different. Recently mine almost killed a party member and friend due to the fact they were supposedly dead a week prior (Party split into different sessions.)

That is correct. It is just labeled along with oathbreaker Paladin in the DMG as “villainous class options,” but in the end it’s up to the DM :) thanks for watching!

"its agenist type" Not really, i mean you go back to the 2ed up to 3.5 it was a common choice for people going a necro focus type theme. It still has the capability of functioning as a healer. Its just not a healbot no one wants to play.

I always disagreed with this being an inherently evil subclass; it can be used for an evil character, but unless you're actually casting Animate Dead/hurting innocent people, there's nothing preventing you from playing a non-evil character. And that's coming from a player who highly dislikes even the concept of non-heroic PCs. Also, in the actual description for the Domain it gives examples of deities who would have the Death Domain; four of them are non-evil. Wee Jas from Greyhawk is Lawful Neutral, as was Hades (in Mythology, and the Raven Queen); Hel (from actual Norse mythology) was True Neutral; and Anubis was LAWFUL GOOD! So no, unlike the Oathbreaker/Oath of Conquest there's nothing inherently evil about this subclass. Dark? Yes, but dark is not evil. Especially considering Inescapable Destruction was specifically designed to combat undead and demons.

I would argue that Animate Dead itself doesn't have to be inherently evil. My current Death Domain cleric sees death as an inevitability, and thus reanimation as an efficient use of resources that will exist one way or the other, as opposed to wasting them by burning them or burying them forever. He's true neutral, which I think fits, given his sort of almost-lawful outlook on corpse utilization while still not really having any set ideals beyond that.

@@IceMetalPunk It is up for interpretation, I'm just going by what the PHB says: "Creating the undead though the use of necromancy spells such as Animate Dead is not a good act, and *only evil* casters will use such spells frequently." Besides, undead that can be created through spells or abilities, are always evil, which implies an inherent evil to the creation of undead. Any spell or ability that creates an evil creature is automatically suspect.

@@jaredsardella2170 The thing about D&D is that it's always open to player modification, and constantly changing even by the official rulings. Recently, Wizards of the Coast made an intentional effort to change how alignment works, separating alignment from race -- which caused some uproar, but ultimately their point was that someone's species shouldn't inherently determine whether they're good or bad. While it's true they haven't done that for non-playable creatures yet, if that's their philosophy -- and combining that with what I said before about how RAW is just a guideline in D&D and not set in stone -- I think it's not a big leap to consider there might be either (a) undead who aren't evil, or (b) reasons for animating the dead which aren't evil.
