Uriah Heep came to the Underground News studio to talk and perform their hit song, Easy Livin', off their legendary album Demons and Wizards. Uriah Heep was an important band as they were one of the forerunners of the Heavy Metal genre. Band members included David Byron, Lee Kerslake, Mick Box, Ken Hensley and Gary Thain. When any musical performer or band appeared on Underground News, there was a specific requirement that no lip-syncing would be allowed.
Uriah Heep's manager and label insisted their sounds be consistent with what people were hearing over the radio and on their vinyl. And, director, Howie Samuelsohn, insisted that at least the vocals must be live. So they compromised by using a pre-recorded instrumental track in the background. Howie believed in truth and authenticity and wasn't happy about that but allowed it this one time only.
Here's Uriah Heep performing their hit Easy Livin' and stay tuned for Demons and Wizards coming soon.

Ironic that a group that recorded songs with lyrics that are mystical and mythical, would record a song about an apparent conversion experience, i.e. becoming a Christian, which songwriter Ken Hensley professed to be, listen carefully to the lyrics in this song

@@Tim091 I'm guessing they just used room mics for that? They only reason I'm saying this is that there are some small differences between this performance and the studio version. Maybe it's possible they recorded another version for lip-synching? I could be wrong.

@@barnabascee1889 They're playing to a recording, but it's a remarkable performance. They were known for their professionalism and as being a tightly rehearsed act. Look at Hensley--he appears to be stoned out of his mind, but I don't doubt they're "playing" as if it's the real deal. I never realized how their vocal harmonies were so well done!

Tremendous, driving drum and bass rhythm - tight as a watertight... Soaring vocals, ace guitar work and keyboards. The best song ending I have ever heard - those last few chords are a masterpiece in themselves, and quite unexpected. So sad David Byron did not live to see the joy his work brought to others.

I saw them years ago in Columbia, SC. What a great show! They had just released Look At Yourself on vinyl, of course.

I loved their albums/music a lot then and it still sounds great today. Funny thing, I heard that Uriah Heep were the model band for Spinal Tap.

Saw Jethro Tull and Uriah Heep (openers) in the mid 70's. Out of around 100 concerts I've seen in my life, that was one of, and possibly my favorite concert of all time. Always a big Heep fan and Tull too.
