This match was a separate narrative apart from the World Cup. I think it's one of the greatest stories ever seen in football (really, sports) history. The whole world wanted to see the climactic chapter in the Luis Suarez vs. England saga that had been happening for 3 years at that point. Years of abuse from the media; almost on an unprecedented level. To see Luis Suarez come back from a near impossible injury to actually knock England out of the World Cup. I consider this one of the greatest moments in World Cup history for sure. If someone made a movie out of it, people would scoff that it's too cheesy. PS. This doesn't even consider the awesome historic context of this match. England, the inventors of football vs. Uruguay, the first ever World champions. 2 iconic football cultures. It was like the son facing the father.

'Years of abuse from the media' makes it sound like they were hounding him for no reason. He bit 3 people, racially abused a player and hand balled it off the line in the 122nd minute and shamelessly celebrated when his team won. I'm no fan of the British press but come on.

Say what you will about him but Suarez was unstoppable that year. He came back from a very bad knee injury to score those 2 fantastic goals against England and then calamity struck in the next game with his foolish actions. I firmly believe if Suarez had continued playing in the WC Uruguay would have made it to the final.

Me too. But Uruguay had awfully bad luck in the last world cups. In 2010 in the game against Ghana Lodeiro and Lugano were injured and couldn't play against Holland and Forlan was at %50 physically and was substituted. In 2014 Suarez couldn't help his psychological issues and was kicked out of the WC. In 2018 Cavani was injured in the game against Portugal and couldn't play against France. Now, before WC 2022 even started Araujo is out of the WC because of an injury

@@charrua007 That's why it's very important to have "depth" in the squad. If you rely too much on certain players you'll eventually run into problems they get injured or have performance "issues".

@@mgmg4484 Logros importantes, pero solo ganar una Copa en 13 años es poco. Pero no lo digo solo por eso, sino q con los monstruos q tenemos deberiamos estar jugando un futbol mas ofensivo. La idea de 'cuidar el empate', hacer un gol y defenderlo a muerte o jugar un futbol de contragolpe y pelotazo ya no funciona. Obvio q una cosa es jugar contra Panama o Tahiti, donde los bailamos, pero otra es cuando enfrentamos a potencias como Francia o Brasil. Uruguay debe ser y es a la altura de esas potencias, cuando quiere, pero hay q demostrarlo en la cancha. Reconozco q Tabarez ha hecho un trabajo estupendo y q levanto Uruguay del ollo adonde estaba metido pero tambien reconozco q si Uruguay no cambia su forma de jugar nunca va ganar otra Copa del Mundo.

El "argumento" de los jugadores que Tabárez ha tenido no corre, porque Uruguay siempre ha tenido cracks, y la última vez que Uruguay ganó un partido en un mundial con otro técnico que no sea Tabárez fue en México 1970 hace 49 años, pasaron todos los cargos y leyendas de los 70, de los 80 , de los 90 y principios del 2000 y los 11 partidos ganados en mundiales por Uruguay desde México 70 son con Tabárez de técnico en 4 mundiales con planteles totalmente diferentes.

Uruguay has twice as many Copa America titles (15 wins) than Chile (2), Colombia (1), Paraguay (2)Peru (2) and Ecuador (0) all combined. I don’t even know why he listed Ecuador, they never won a championship in their lives. There is a huge margin of difference between the top 3 (Argentina, Brazil, & Uruguay) vs the rest of South America. Just a few years ago (2018) Uruguay was ranked #5 by FIFA. Maybe you live under a rock, but Uruguay has stayed ranked in the top 10 national teams for the past decade. I don’t recall those other 5 countries ever being in the top 10. Furthermore, Uruguay has a much smaller population (3 million) than all of those other countries, yet Uruguay can still win championships throughout those 100 years. When you look at the numbers, proportionally, and statistically, Uruguay is a much better team.Let me guess, you are an Americano who started watching soccer last month?

As Rooney and England fan from southeast asia, i stay up late to watch this game. When Rooney finally scored his world Cup goal, it was a joy and satisfaction for me. Watching him got so many chances but luck denied him. He maybe not an England greatest at the World Cup but for what he had done for his country, he deserves a world cup goal.
