Move to Uruguay as a digital nomad or remote worker

BIG NEWS Digital nomads and remote workers can now obtain a residency permit to work legally from Uruguay for six to twelve months.
“Uruguay is in the sweet spot between the US West coast and Eastern Europe” says Chris Roe, 42, a global communication coach from New York City. “I have a new client from Dubai and when we meet: it’s 9am for me in Uruguay and 4pm for him.”
Roe found himself stuck in Uruguay in 2020 when the borders closed during the pandemic and opted to stay for over a year. He returned to Uruguay in 2023.
In this interview with Guru’Guay founder Karen Higgs, he shares the eight things that he loves about being based in Uruguay as a digital nomad. And two things he doesn’t love so much.
-----------------------------------------------------
Roe, who has been a digital nomad for over three years and worked out of countries as far flung as Indonesia and Mexico, praises the quality of life in Uruguay. “There's a really nice work-life balance that doesn't exist in other places that I've been.”
Lack of community is a big issue for many digital nomads. In Uruguay, Chris found himself approached by business contacts on LinkedIn interested in inviting him out for a coffee. Unlike most countries where digital nomads tend to stick together out of necessity, Chris says “the locals in Uruguay are actually willing to help and they want to meet you. It’s so refreshing.”
He loves the great internet connectivity, finding it easy and very affordable to connect on high-quality wifi anywhere in Uruguay-from the beach to the hills as well as the city.
Coming to work remotely is a great way to test Uruguay as a future home. It’s an easy place to fall in love with and now remarkably easy to apply to live and work legally as a digital nomad for six to twelve months-and eventually apply for permanent residency.

As s foreigner who married a uruguayan and has chosen to retire here, nowhere is perfect. While the current Government is excellent, the opposition Frente Amplio ( and Municipality of Montevideo) is driven by Extreme Left / Communist factions that remind me of the UK trade unions of the 1970s. This party "governed" Uruguay for 15 years from 2005 to 2019 and wasted billions of dollars earned in boom times on totally misguided and mismanaged projects. Given the leftist indoctrination of half the population, there is an even chance that the FA could be re-elected in 2024. Property taxes in the better areas of Montevideo were jacked up 40% this year without any explanation or accountability. While this political situation may not affect a digital nomad, it definitely should concern a potential long term resident or foreign investor.

@@keepinmind8846 I think it depends on your personal circumstances. If the property is relatively inexpensive, I dont think it makes much difference. If you are single and male, the city center ( Cordon / Palermo, not the old commercial area off 18 de julio) is the most lively but it can be iffy safety wise. About 15 years ago the Ciudad Vieja was set to become an arty historic place like Cartegena but it hasnt fulfilled its promise and is a dangerous area at night. I would favour Pocitos.

There's so many opportunities for those that have the brains and entrepreneurship spirit. What's best, the goverment makes it easy to do business. None of this over-regulation you get in the states, western Europe etc. You could be up and running selling hot dogs on the streets in a cpl days, after a health inspection. In the US they make you jump through lots of unreasonable steps to get anything registered.

I understannd there's a 22% VAT. Employer pays 12+% to what is the equivalent of Social Security. Is that correct? What do you have to pay as an employer in terms of medical insurance, unemployment, etc? What would one pay in terms of property tax for a home with a valuation of say $150,000 ? As far as having employees, what's that like? Are you required to pay for X amount of time off per year? Sick pay required? What about termination for things like missing days, showing up late, poor performance, etc?

@@MotionPictureTrips wtf are you on about? It takes 1-2 days for an LLC to be registered. That's all you need. It's cheaper in the US too, about $100. Compared to UY at $700+

Hey, if you like doing business in the over-regulated US, you can keep that. Who cares about the price if you're over-regulated right and left. This is ONE of the reasons a lot of small business owners are relocating their operations abroad, they don't want to deal with uncle Biden. But if you like him, you can keep him too. @@DestinationJapan95

My partner & I are looking into making a trip to do more research about the country. Wondering if you and/or Chris would be so kind as to recommend a good air B & B for a week stay? Also, what are the top 3 cities in Uruguay that are the most livable? In terms of cost of living, natural beauty (eg. being close to the ocean), work opportunities. Any other information you think might be helpful would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

Thanks for the amazing information! A few things are not clear however... I'd appreciate some more clarity since I haven't found answers anywhere on the internet. 1. If I apply online and have someone help in paying the fee locally, will the granted DN visa allow me to enter Uruguay or do I still need to get a tourist visa? 2. Will the DN visa allow me to sign documents such as a rent lease, opening a bank account, and other administrative things like any other resident? Or is it just like a tourist visa but with a longer stay period? 4. If I apply today, will the granted DN visa period of 180 days begin immediately or starting a chosen date that I pick in the future? Thank you!

Hello! 1) You need to enter the country with a tourist visa, if required, that allows you to stay for a maximum of 180 days. The Digital Nomad Permit enables you to stay for a period of time of 6 months to 1 year. 2) The overall process lasts between 10 working days. Please note that, at the moment, communication lines are busy due to high flow of requests. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with. Sadly, I found on looking into the requirements for entry from the USA that, though no entry visa is required, there are a number of other certifications of a formal nature almost all of which have costs. Translation of documents into Spanish by a certified person is one example. Vaccination records are another. The video above is well done and is encouraging for "digital nomads", but for a retiree directed towards living in Uruguay linguistic problem for someone who does not speak or read Spanish would be formidable. There is no mention of it in the video. Such an obvious omission points to the formidability.

Digital nomad visa are a bad idea for any country. Especially unspoiled countries. I live in South America. I love it. But I don't tell anyone where I live because I don't want to encourage anyone to discover the paradise I live it. Why? Because more foreigners ruin the local culture. In 5 years I have seen massive change. Some very good. Most of it bad that ruins the locals mindset, the culture, and the economics. I am embarrassed by the foreigners that come and treat it as if it is another Cancun on spring break. So videos like this are unfortunate. Exposing more of the world the relatively unspoiled cultures and lands. Unfortunately digital nomads can't keep their mouth shut about the amazing places they live.

Uruguay is one of a few countries in the world , that you never going to get Uruguayan nationality regardless the time you lived in the country or even if are married or have an Uruguayan born child . If you decide to live permanently in the country you have to take that into account ver seriously . You can lose your own nationality for acquitting a long term permit called “ciudadanía legal” ( is a specific type of citizenship that can lead you to lose your citizenship/ nationality, but you never will get Uruguayan nationality ). Once you have “ciudadanía legal” they will issue an Uruguayan passport as foreigner . This passport with a foreigner nationality it’s not recognize for most countries and they will ask you for a visa . More sad part is that some countries refuse to stamp you a visa on an Uruguayan passport while you’re not Uruguayan . Government and agencies know exactly the problem but is a kind of xenophobia , only pure Uruguayan born blood deserves to be Uruguayan according to laws
