I’m a retired Army Infantryman, that open space behind the 3 large pockets on the back were where we would put our machete, once it was inserted to the point we wanted, we used some 550 cord to secure it to keep it from sliding up or down. I never saw or used this improved medium ALICE ruck but some features are still the same. In 1991 while at Ft. Campbell, KY we were issued the new TREDEK internal frame ruck which looked nice until we took it on road marches and the damn aluminum stiffening strips would wiggle out of their retention pockets and slowly slide down until it hit the back of your heels which hurt like a bitch! Some men got so mad they threw the ruck off into the woods, lol. Then the Y yoke for the shoulder straps were constantly snapping and was impossible to repair in the field. It wasn’t too long until we turned this back in and got our old large ALICE packs back. The medium ALICE ruck was issued mainly to non-combat Soldiers or used by RTO’s specifically for carrying a radio which we never used it for since the large ALICE already had a radio pocket inside the main pack that worked great.

No frame? No way. But, I'd like to see one with just PALS on the front and sides. That way you could use Molle sustainment pouches or the Molle waist pack. I also wish that the sustainment pouches had full length straps and D rings top and bottom.
