C-5 part brought me fond memories of my deceased brother who used to pilot them at Dover, DE. Since he retired in '92, this was during the TF-39 Scream'n Giant era. I have some cool pix of him taken during a re-fueling. He was AC Commander and had also worn the "select lead crew" patch. I'm proud of him in his service to our country⚠️

Mostly an informative look at our largest airlifter. Regarding refueling, @5:31 you discuss the KC-135 Stratotanker however, the video is obviously of the larger and newer KC-10 Extender. Additionally, the main landing gear is composed of 4 sets of 6 wheels and FOUR nose wheels. The rest of the interesting montage was good. My service in the USAF was over 40 years ago during the early days of the A-10's initial operations at Myrtle Beach AFB, which is now closed.

I found the control inputs shown on the video fascinating! I have never flown an aircraft where you could move the control yoke as loosely as in the video. I have flown the following jet airliners, DC 9, Boeing 727, Boeing 767, 757, 747, and the L1011. What is going on in the flight deck?
@LaneSykes
@LaneSykes Жыл бұрын
I flew about 1000 hours of refueling in the C5 and most in the C141. Most newer refueling pilots make a lot of control inputs during refueling. It takes a long time to get comfortable enough to relax. Both pilots seat positions were normal for a new refueling pilot. My position was full recline, full forward and almost to the bottom. The commentator mistook the KC 10 for the KC135 and the nose wheel has 4 tires instead of the two mentioned in the dialogue.
@Punchbowl403
@Punchbowl403 Жыл бұрын
@@LaneSykes While I flew "close formation" as a fighter pilot, I never flew an aircraft being refuelled in the air, so I shall accept your answer. Still, I did find it strange to see such sudden control inputs on a large aircraft. Even flying "close formation" those sudden and jerky control inputs would have been "counter productive"!
@bodega01
@bodega01 Жыл бұрын
@@Punchbowl403 I hate the tell you, but a fighter's control surfaces are a lot smaller than the any transport. It takes a good amount of control wheel imput to even start a change. That's why transports don't do too well in rolls, loops, etc.. Sorry. But I knew you knew that. 30-year Air Force Flight Engineer (C-130E/H, C-141A/B, KC-10A) speaking. I really miss flying..

There is a youtube video of the cargo shifting inside a C-5 on take-off. The end result was horrendous. I just can't imagine a pilot not checking the tie-downs before take-off. Doesn't matter what the Cargo-master says. Ultimately, the pilot is responsible. Decades ago my brother used to be a Cargo-master for C-141's. It's a very important job.

When I left the EA-6B in the early 2000s I think we were about 44 maintenance hours per flight hour. The older aircraft are more maintenance intensive of course. I think at that time the F-18 was at about 5 maintenance hours per flight hour. The Hornet had been around for nearly twenty years at the time. It's getting easier for maintainers.

Do the transport aircraft take off with less than a full fuel capacity and then top off when they are airborne? It must take an enormous amount of energy to get all that weight off the runway.
