Watch the second episode of this series and you will see the most nervous ones (Nati and Jayden) adapted to it really quickly while the ones laughing took much longer to understand that they shouldn't be laughing. Nati is really good. He's got the right attitude. He has discipline. He's quiet and he learns fast. He picked up Korean from their previous one-day visit to a Korean high school and he went on to continue learning Korean and cooking Korean food. All part of the equation to his speedy adjustment.

Just a quick rundown so you'll know the boys: Bobby is a mumma's boy, in a very good and cute way. He's always calling his mum and he always talks about his mum in the previous series. His mum got famous too as she always comments on the videos of the boys previously. On the other hand, Max and Armand are best friends - these two are the most famous amongst Korean Englishman fans in Korea. They're both fun and relaxed and just hilarious. Armand was the student leader in their highschool, so he was pretty much uptight at first but Max kept him balanced, IMO. Nati and Harvey are also best friends - they're very smart and really good boys, just quiet most of the time but very opinionated too. Jayden is the most quiet of them all, and he's the one who's sort of a bit difficult to try on things. He's very honest, not in a rude way, but he's very fond of the K-culture too. These boys were scholars in Fulham Highschool, they're very intelligent and polite. And they're handled by Mr. Smith, the head director of their highschool - he also made appearances in the previous series. He's a friend of Josh from way back.

There was an earlier series on the channel titled Twins in Korea. Josh and Ollie took friends of theirs, a set of twins. One is a priest and the other is a Major in the British military. During the series, they filmed on the Korean Army base, the one he referenced earlier in the video. It’s a lot more light hearted than this. A few of the video focused on a workout regimen, training exercises, and episodes involving military rations and PX food. Definitely worth checking out!

Armand (the giggler) was definitely showing some anxiety. He was a leader in his school, and you can see him in previous videos take control of their group and being serious when needed, but here he was totally out of it. The wide eyed scared look he throws and his snapping at the boys shows his agitation. Before, no matter how rowdy the guys got, he had the patience of saint. Reply

I'm Korean and not good at English. So I write a comment with help of a google translator. Sry It's been about 7~8 years since I was discharged from the military. At that time, I felt that it's a hell almost every day in milltary traning center.😅 DI always screamed or shouted, because they brought up to be respectful of 'cooperation' for us. Plus team-work, altruism, respect etc.. It becomes a very valuable asset when we go out into society later. Adversity will make a jewel of you. Thx! I hope everyone is happy today

Its been interesting as a fan of this series seeing how the experience has challenged these boys. Like at 39:50 KE fans have pieced together that Armand must have gotten the platoon in trouble because he wouldn't stop smiling. Armand was top of his class in high school: he's not used to being the guy who screws up, and it shows in his reaction. There's a later episode where his friend Max, who has generally been a cheerful and adventurous guy who is gung ho about everything, hits a moment where he's terrified and wants to quit and needs his teammates to push him into completing the task. His reaction was heartbreaking, but it seemed to be good for him. I feel like this skill, of failing, effing up and pushing through, is an important one for every young man to learn.

The boys were in high school together and were regulars in a series about Korean food (plus some Jolly vids); they graduated the same year. KrnEng/Jolly took them to South Korea partly for a video series but also as a graduation gift. They're now all university students, around 20 years old. Dave (Mr Smith) was their high school headmaster and a longtime close friend of Josh, which is how KE got connected to the school. They still do videos there; there's a current series of students trying American food. Jolly also have a good friend in the British army (forgot his rank but he's at least a commander I think??) whose twin is another close friend of them (and Ollie's brother-in-law)... who is a priest 😆. They did a few videos with the twins with the S. Korean military too (within a series in SK). Funny thing is that it was a surprise so imagine the crew's reaction when their commander friend, once his shock faded, told them to pause everything because he (genuinely) needed clearance from the British military first. 😂

Please continue with this series. In my 64 years, I have had a number of friends and relatives serve, most never discussed with me (an outsider) their experiences. One exception was Steve. When I was a re-entering college student (24 y.o.), I became good friends with a fellow classmate, who was a Marine sergeant and the same age as me. (Funny how at 24 we felt so much older than the 17-19 year olds that were in our classes). Steve was a psych major with plans to become an officer. He was very interested in, and shared with me, the tearing down and building back up of training.

Didn't serve in the Marine corp, but served at a artillery brigade at the Army. Ngl their attitude is exactly what the DI's squeeze out of you in the first 2 weeks. The aura at the bootcamp is so heavy that you feel your shoulders starting to slump. Realistically the aura at the battlefield is going to be much heavier with your life on the line. Learning to keep your head straight and focus on the objective is the first thing we learn. While there's nothing wrong with being jolly, being jolly at the bootcamp irks me xD

Can I also say as a Korean, something like this is a tough experience but it ultimately does have its long term benefits. Not everyone does come out of it with improvement, of course, and there are cases of bullying etc. In some ways, it’s no different from school in that for most kids, school will end up making better people out of them in terms of not just academic knowledge, but socialisation etc. The military duty in Korea, while tough and disruptive to one’s tertiary study or career, will also have young men coming out on the other end with more resilience, confidence in themselves, appreciation for their family and friends, as well as maturity. One of my younger cousins is a prime example of a young man who was rebelling and not really headed anywhere in life. Post his military duty, his relationship with my aunt and uncle have improved drastically, and he has a sense of purpose. This has happened not to every one, no, but to a significant number of young men, regardless of whether they were on the ‘right’ path or not prior, that many do appreciate the time and experience. Would they do it again? Fuck no, but that’s not the point - the point is that they gained something at the other end. What is a shame is that there should be something for women too. As a Korean woman, I do think that while the history of a deeply patriarchal - more so than the west - society has been detrimental to women, that’s no excuse. If young Korean men are sent to military for just in case (as in North Korea going ape shit), young Korean women need at least something like compulsory and comprehensive first aid and other training, or a separate single sex military training. And before people argue that that’s sexist or whatever, I only say that because unfortunately, the military has proven time and time again globally that it often doesn’t respect women. Yes, there are countries where women are legitimately respected and treated as equals in the military but that’s rare. Sexual misconduct, belittling, etc. is still prevalent and unfortunately not talked about enough. You also can’t deny that physically, men and women ARE different overall. It’s not about special treatment so much as being able to maximise ability in the most effective way. More about equity for the good of all, not basic equality. I do reject the argument about how unfair it is that men are set back up to two years in their tertiary study or careers, however, only because it’s Korea and the way women are treated in the workforce is still very sexist and unequal. The way women are hassled about things like marriage and motherhood is still pretty shocking, to the point where some employers/companies will passive aggressively make a woman feel like a sinner for maternity leave and commitments to their children while working at the same time, because they’re seen to be a nuisance and ineffective workers. Let’s not even get into the problem of how women are automatically expected to take care of the children even if they work full time like their husbands (not necessarily by the husbands but in laws and just society in general). Once the Korean society changes that, then we can argue about the fairness and equality of military service time.

I was in the Navy for 12 years, we had to get up at 4:30 am in bootcamp. I agree some is not realistic, we had 20 mins for lunch so they were no conversation. I felt it was a little disrespectful all the laughing they were doing. That wouldn’t happen if they were really enlisted. I too have followed this series when they were in high school, the headmaster is always funny.

This is a nice series, Roscoe! I've been watching Korean Englishman since these boys were in highschool. It'll be nice to watch them since they were younger, just trying out Korean foods with Josh and Ollie. Until they visited Korea and learned the culture. Now that they're on break from uni, they get to experience this. How fast that these boys grow up and it's just endearing to watch them all together again. Happy to see you reacting to this, Roscoe 😊💜

I am a huge fam of the these guys...I watch both of Josh and Ollies channels on youtube and have "known" these boys since they were in there early teens. This series in particular was very interesting. They quickly lose the goofing around ( the center of much of their past trips to Korea) and gain a respect for those who serve.

I watched every single one of this military service series of videos so far... you really should keep watching it too... and I'm also enjoying your insights and commentary on this video... I was in the National Cadet Corps in Singapore during my Secondary School days when I was aged 13 to 16, and we did a lot of this kind of training too... the marching drills, the physical training, rifle range, rope confidence course, obstacle course, orientation with maps and compasses, and annual boot camp in actual military barracks during the school holidays. I was definitely a whole lot fitter then than I am now.

I'm a big Korean Englishman/Jolly fan and love all of their content. It was great seeing your perspective on it with your military background. I hope you watch the rest of the series! They also did a series a number of years ago taking their friend and his twin brother to Korea. One is a priest the other an officer in the UK army. They spend 2 days. (or episodes) at a military training center doing some cool stuff, it's definitely worth a watch.
