As the country prepares to honor America's veterans and fallen heroes over Memorial Day weekend, the U.S. military is facing a recruiting crisis.
The Army, Navy and Air Force are expected to miss recruitment goals by thousands. NewsNation national correspondent Alex Caprariello spoke to members of different branches who told him enlisting the nation's young men and women is the highest priority.

@@300whiteout9 Well, the way I think about it is that we’d be going out and dying so bad people can continue making our lives miserable, only to go home and be tossed on the curb like we’re human garbage, used and then disposable. @@Karoke77 @Karoke77 nope. I accurately described the events of my older brother: the best army officer I've ever seen, a West Point grad, combat arms, went through the Special Forces Q course, and has now spent 11-12 years in the Army. Everything I know about the US military is straight from veterans and active duty. It's a highly political and corrupt institution, which is why people are getting out in droves. It's also a welfare program to give people jobs, and an immigration program to give people citizenship. It barely resembles its historical self at its height, The Marshall Era during WW2. Read the other comments if you don't believe me and keep watching the statistics prove my point.

Except that's not the stated reason they aren't joining, and not the stated reason people are getting out. We have always had sizable numbers liberal troops, and most of us knew they were here. People are getting out primarily because of poor leadership (abusive or out-of-touch), access to sites like LiveLeak that show what happens to human bodies on the battlefield, income incongruent with the national costs of living, the amount of information available about shady government activities (Lies about WMDs), the DoDs self admitted extremist problem, sexual assault in the ranks, and a host of other military issues you probably aren't considering. No one I ever heard of or am serving with is quitting or refusing to join because "transpeople" or "minorities" or "respect women" is part of the dialogue.

33 years in the Army, and 3 wars later. The blended 401K retirement is one of the core problems. When the Democrat controlled Congress stopped the military pension retirement system to "save money," the country lost a core group of officers and NCOs who were willing to endure almost anything for that life time pension in exchange for 20 years of service. The VA always treats me fine, and my fellow Americans are ALWAYS respectful of my rank and service.

I agree. But it’s not just military leadership, I’m afraid. There’s a term in war - “Remember what you’re fighting for”. We’d be fighting so a bunch of a-holes can strip our rights away while people get shot dead on US soil every single day, so our futures can be tarnished by terrible people who only care about themselves and their money, only to come home and be discarded like human trash. You’d never catch any of us dead fighting for such a thing. Sounds awful. If we are to find ourselves serving, the entirety of our politics needs to go through dramatic change, our leaders need to start actually caring about all of us, and human rights need to be protected at all costs. We are literally doing the opposite of all that. So for the foreseeable future, expecting us Zoomers to serve America is genuinely a waste of expectations and praying for such a thing is a waste of breath. America needs to be worthy of our sacrifice for us to want to sacrifice for it. How the hell can America expect people to want to go and die overseas when the people on US Soil are so frail and so selfish they can’t even wear a god damned MASK during a global pandemic? That’s just a small example, but still highlights how selfish Americans can be.

I'm a big proponent of the military. I will not discourage anyone wanting to join, everyone's reality is different. Make your decisions based on your needs and wants not emotions. Having said that, there are too many wrong people in charge in critical positions that base decisions on emotion and their own views, not what's best for the team as a whole. Of course this is over simplifying. Patriotism has been demonized by the media.

As a young person who ended up passing on military service… the two major factors for me were the commitment for educated service and the red tape. I think they should shift from everyone going into basic training to kinda having two parts of the military. Fighting people and trades/desk people. I passed cuz while I would really enjoy the work, I didn’t want to put myself through the physical and emotional abuse the military system puts you through when I had opportunities outside the military.

Do you truly want to join Jin? Because if you do, I recommend reaching out to a lawyer. Might take a bit of “ persuasion” but they might be able to help you. Talk to them about everything and anything that can be done to get in. Then bring them with you to speak to the Army/Navy. I wouldn’t try the others right now. You might have to speak to a psychologist to show you’re fine and that that was a situation you just weren’t prepared for back then. Make sure everything else isn’t so bad though that it makes things harder for you. Ikno the video said this and that, but make sure you’re not extremely unhealthy. No tattoos. Come in clean and respectable. Believe me when I say, I’ve got stuff on my record that would put your situation to shame. That’s not to insult, but more inspire you. They still want to take me. I just hadn’t yet cuz I still want to find civilian work overseas. Worse case scenario, I’m gonna have to get shipped there in the army. You can do it. Believe me, they need all the help they can get. You might also want to check around to see who can help you. Maybe call around. Some recruiters might have more clout than you realize. But only do this if you’re truly serious. Remember, unless you do some unforgivable ish that would get you kicked out and mess up your record more than you think you already have, once you’re in, there is no turning back until your contract is up…pray on it brethren.

@@kingrobotnik6950 I was not aware that lawyers could help me in this scenario. I have a medical record saying I'm depressed and have SI. It is a one time scenario under an extremely stressful situation but it looks way worse than it really was. I said a lot of dumb things back then out of a burst of emotion and I didn't expect the backlash to be this severe. This is my one and only issue. I have no criminal record, in relatively good health (slightly overweight) and passed their test easily enough. I've been told that SI is the lowest chance for waiver and given how every recruiter would tell me not even to bother it's hard not to feel discouraged.

@@jink1768 you main goal really is to just get them to realize that was a one time thing ages ago and that you’ve recovered from it and are ready to serve. They just want to know that you’d be able to hand,e the pressure. Believe me, I had a similar situation. Said some things, therapist couldn’t handle it so he decided to get someone who hit me with a “I wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t make sure you were ok schtick.” 🙄 1 week at the looney bin later, nothing was gained, I had to pay outta pocket for the ambulance, and the cowardly therapist who called that cow left. Probably went back to Japan once he realized people here express their feelings, not bottle it up and take it out in Aokigahara. In fact the only issue they had with me joining involved a panic disorder I had for awhile do to a bad edible trip. My doctor gave me meds instead of just talking to me(which is what I truly needed) and thank God I didn’t take them. Now I’m gonna get a letter from her this week explaining that I didn’t need them and that I’m ok. (Can you believe this woman tried to dance around it at first scared to give me my letter, instead wanting me to talk to a therapist…again. Yeah I talked to a couple therapists before and it didn’t help cuz they didn’t get it 😅 I’m like no Doc, YOU prescribed the meds. They want the letter from you, not the therapist) but yeah. If you have a good case and you’ve presented it to you recruiter(Ikno after my tirade you might be hesitant but talk to a therapist ONCE and get a letter from them indicating you’re good to go.) and it still doesn’t work then, yeah, get legal help if you really want to be in it and there’s no loopholes, waivers, or whatever they can do to help you get around it. There might be something everyone’s missing that a lawyer can find for you. Good luck bro and if things work out, I’ll see you out there!

Serving 20 years in the United States Army is the best decision I have ever made. The Army paid for my bachelor's and Masters degree. I also transferred my GI Bill to my son and daughter. The youth today are not patriotic and are more focused on other things. Plus, I don't believe the discipline is there for the new generation.

Do you think wokeness plays a part in this? I am an older man but i don't blame them for not joining under such a pathetic commander in chief as Joe Biden who is trying to push wokeness on them. Naming a ship the USS Harvey Milk is shameful to the nation. They may be deployed against US citizens themselves if Joe's woke puppetmasters think they can pull it off.

@@Ultizer By that point the average American already knew that, to wake people up you need to say something that the average American wasn't thinking about like "money Is debt". The average soldier was a person who joined because they had family who were also in the military, about 80% has at least one family member. The issue with that is that for the past 2 decades soldiers have felt used and lied too, thus dissuading youth from the military.
