It absolutely was Hollywood jump. No H harness or equipment to deal with. No opening shock to speak of since it is Rotary wing and you don’t have to worry about your PLF because you have on water wings and your feet never touch the ground. i’ve made these jumps out of a UH1 and C-130. Good times.

I remember hearing similar stories. Never did a water landing either, but damn, looks fun!

Almost the same thing on Sicily drop. Rain came just before the jump. A friend thought long street was a water landing. He panicked and undis his harness and hopped free from too high. 2 broken ankles and I never saw him again. He was at womac when we left for Europe. Gone when we returned

On D-Day the landing troops carried over 70 lbs. on their backs and they drowned when they had to leave the landing craft before it got anywhere near the beach.

@@sublime929Read. They had over 100# on their backs. Maybe you should try getting all the parachute harness off to have the ability to get the pack off with all the extra straps and confinement that kept it place for the jump. They jumped from about 400 feet so they were moving fast with the chute above them when they hit. They could hold their breath only so long and that first gasp of water pretty much tells the rest of the story.

Yep- looks like maybe it had a bad spring. The "gate" was still facing the correct way, though- so minimal risk. As long as the pilot didn't do a sharp banking maneuver to the right, everyone should be o.k. We often had jumpers clipped in to either "seat belts" or onto a safety ring as an additional safety measure. These would be disconnected by the JM and stowed around the "3 minute" mark. I was the PJM (Primary Jumpmaster) on a C130 jump; we'd already had the "3 minute slow-down" and the Load Master had turned the door over to me. I'm glad I had a good grip on the door frame, because suddenly the pilot executed a steep left bank (I was almost looking straight down at the ground). The plane popped back upright and I was staring at the leading edge of the DZ! That MFer had been flying N to S instead of W to E... 🙄

Well we know you don’t have jump wings. first of all, we don’t have our full equipment with these jumps. secondly, we’re wearing what we call water wings. there are a life preserver that fits underneath your armpits that you inflate before you go into the water. so you’re supported and one of the things you practice in jump school is getting out of that harness quickly. so no, there’s a piece of cake. they come pick you up in the zodiac, if you got someone aboard to help you on and pull your equipment, all the water. it only gets to be a chore once you’re on land.

But your explanation how the same equipment used in WW2 continues to be issued today and is saving lives. Having all those additional harnesses pulled so tight it took straining both arms to unbuckle each one didn’t slow those heros down one bit. But it kept that parachute attached to the over 250 pounds when it opened. What’s even more impressive are all the additional harnesses and metal buckles pulled to the maximum so the 100 pounds strapped to their backs didn’t bounce around as they walked. You aren’t familiar with anything, not even Wikipedia, about an event that took place EIGHTY years ago. You reek of stolen valor. Good luck with that when a real man notices it in passing.

It can be. In my experience, we rarely performed water jumps in full combat equipment. There are different ways to enter the water from an aircraft: via parachute, and by helocasting. If we were parachuting out of a helo, the easiest was to do a tailgate (usually out of a CH-46 or CH-47). Attempting a full combat equipment jump out of a "Slick" (Huey) or a Blackhawk is *not* optimal. All gear needed to be prepped to float- you didn't want your gear to drag you under water; we also didn't use the HPT lowering line on our ruck as we did for normal (land) jumps for this reason.

Sometimes I couldn't believe I was getting paid to do some of the stuff I was asked to do!

De@th is a possibility, but unlikely. For intentional water jumps, "water wings" or PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) were mandatory. Hitting water from too high an altitude or too fast can be like hitting concrete-it *hurts*. In helocasting (different from a "water jump"), the 'normal' was "30 and 30" (30' above the water, 30 knots airspeed). An (ahem) 'unsanctioned' helocast of "50 and 50" was *significantly* different- hitting the water can "knock the 'wind' out of you"... and you'll be thanking God for those irritating PFDs. "Swan dives" aren't recommended, as unknown underwater hazards (or water being too shallow) could result in serious injury. We're taught a safer method to enter the water, minimizing the depth you 'sink' in.

Always be ready for the unexpected, always train for the unexpected.. then your ready
