Lendl was always my favorite player in the 80s, but Connors' face on 8:17 is a whole show. It's like a teenager enjoying a prank.

Lendl had definitely figured out Connors' weakness by this point. Give him little to no pace and in particular slice to his forehand. Jimmy never managed to alter his forehand to deal with low shots consistently well.

Let's not forget that Connors was 35yrs old at this point and Lendl was firmly in place as the world #1. Jimmy is a step slower and his shots with a bit less sting. 1st set was pretty competitive however.

lendl's tactic is clear: slice on connor's forehand.

Yep he knew exactly how to beat Connors.

Remember Jimmy was still beating a lot of people at 35. Lendl's style would win at any age. He still could have won more majors than he did though.

A great champion like Connors clearly acknowledging Lendl's supremacy here. The handshake was quite cordial and Jimmy realising that Ivan was way too superior for him by 87.

Is it just me or does the sound of the ball off the racket seem sweeter back then
@willritter40762 жыл бұрын
Connors absolutely hated playing against Lendl's slice backhand... his game had no answer to it. Lendl would just keep slicing from side to side until he got a ball from Connors that he liked, then he would move around and pummel a forehand (or 2 or 3) to win the point. Clinical stuff.

Jimbo has a lot of heart, but that’s a mismatch in every category

Has a player defeated at three 5X Grand Slam champions (at the time) in a row in one Grand Slam? I imagine Lendl is the only player to ever do this in tennis history?

Lendl should have hit old connors off the CRT but lendl decided to push. That is why he didnt win more majors
@thebigmonstaandy66445 жыл бұрын
he played to much backhand slice,and serve and volley on grass. and he had very tough competition. he did not push : he made a lot of winners. PS im Jimmy did change his forehand,he would play till 2000
@th82574 жыл бұрын
Nope - you're totally missing the point. Lendl played like this against Connors because it was well known that it was Connors' weakness. Connors' loved pace and all the players knew that he had real problems dealing with low sliced balls to his forehand. Lendl won something like his last 17 matches in a row against Connors playing like this, including winning in straight sets here. Why on earth would you change a winning strategy like that?
@joelfick4 жыл бұрын
Nah. This is just how you beat Connors. Lendl played it right.

I agree 100 percent. Yes if you look at earlier years he came over the backhand more. Yes I know on clay he did come over it. Look at the 2 semi finals with Agassi in 88 and 89. By 89 it had got worse and with Lendls low percentage of first serves of he basically won with his forehead alone. I know why he used it against Connors but still think when he occasionally opened up against Connors on the backhand he had him in trouble. The slice which was Roches idea and was a throw back to that 70s Aussie style that had no place in the late 80s and the power game. Lendl suffered against Becker because of it. Notice he beat Becker in the 92 4th round by playing much more aggressive and by the then he was slightly past his best. Imagine if he had come to that realization 4 or 5 years earlier. Definitely another couple of Slams.

Mats Wilander recently said about Tsitsipas that he doesn't understand yet that tennis isn't just about going out there and playing your "A" game as well as you can. In many circumstances that's the most stupid thing you can do as in many cases your opponent will be able to do it better. He said Tsitsipas has to learn that much of tennis is trying to find ways to break up your opponent's game and make them play worse. That's exactly what Lendl did here. It's amazing how many tennis fans don't understand that - they think it's all about trying to hit people off the court, when that's often the most stupid thing you can try and do.

Never a fan of Lendl. Conners had already win 5 US Opens. He was old here and 8 years older that boring Lendl. Jimmy was the very best. Period.
@thadtuiol17172 жыл бұрын
He was the best streetfighter in tennis, but that sliced forehand was kinda lame and he had no answer to Lendl's sliced backhands
