Lendl was my all time favorite...I miss him in tennis. Thanks for this video, nice quality also!

This was my favorite Agassi outfit and favorite Lendl outfit (the one Coach Roach was wearing in red). I wish Lendl had won the 89 Open after a mediocre 88 where he didn’t win any slams and an 89 where he had two very close defeats to Chang at the French and Becker at Wimbledon, both 5 setters he should have won.

Crazy to think that Agassi was denied two finals by Lendl, the player of the 80s, denied 3 championships by Sampras, the player of the 90s, and denied a championship by Federer, the player of the 00s.

Agassi career spanned over Prime Lendl era (1987) to Prime Federer era (2006).

hongkongsmartboy and he played Connors and Nadal . Coached Djokovic and lived at the Boletteri academy from 14y.o. Incredible tennis experience. I don’t think anyone can claim to have a more immersive connection to the sport.

@@hongkongsmartboy Yes that's true only Connors and Federer are this long on the tour. But it does seem a fact when you read the Agassi Biography, that he is negative about all tennisplayers: Becker is called "B.b. socrates"Chang is a religion fanatic, Connors "is hated by all players on tour". Its his attitude towards others that I find very disrespectful.

More than one by Federer. Agassi pushed Federer to five sets in 2004 and had he won that match I don’t think anyone else could’ve stopped him that year.

Great match. Both players were moving and hitting the ball very well. They both play similar styles, but Lendl was just more consistent.

In the days when most video recordings were diabolically poor, how refreshing to watch a match where the picture quality is excellent. It is a shame so many great matches were recorded on poor VHS machines right up to the early 2000s. Watched the whole match, thanks for uploading.

So much of it was due to the appalling NTSC TV standard that the USA used back then. Significantly lower picture quality than the PAL system that was used in Europe and elsewhere. Even here, the picture quality is noticeably worse than what you'd get with PAL

Lendl giving a real lesson to those who don't understand how damaging a slice backhand can be. Very difficult for two handers in particular to deal with. Because it's so low, it's very difficult to attack, It ruins the timing and is very tiring - all the digging out of low balls is exhausting. It's also very energy efficient for the person playing it. You can see here Lendl gently slicing the ball back and Agassi wearing himself out trying to dig it out and hit with top spin. It's why Lendl had such a brilliant record against the Bolletieri players. Agassi and Courier just didn't know how to deal with it.

Interesting viewpoint on the slice backhand. I guess that it is more energy conserving but in my opinion the two hander is more consistent due to higher net clearance and can be hit with more power and depth due to topspin. It's a safer, higher percentage shot vs. the slice. You don't see it much anymore on baseline exchanges the way Lendl utilizes it here. I think Brad Gilbert used to do the same thing. Slice is good nowadays for recovering on stretched defensive shots and occasionally mixing play tempo. My two cents.

@@ryankiel4895 see Ash Barty and what the slice did for her. It's still a very useful shot. Especially for players who like to run around their backhands, they can use the slice as a set up shot for that.

First, underspin on the backhand or forehand groundstrokes is, as the late, great tennis teacher/researcher Vic Braden correctly pointed out, erroneously refered to as "slice" - slice refers to sidespin as in "slice serve". Second, although a topspin shot on a baseline groundstroke is generally a higher percentage play than underspin, that is only true if someone lacks proper form when hitting an underspin backhand or forehand. If a player utilizes proper footwork, weight transfer and a proper swing, the underspin backhand and forehand are rock solid, high percentage, safe shots! One of the most effective shots in tennis that is sadly nonexistent in today's cheapened form of the game is the line drive underspin backhand that travels low over the net and has the striker's body weight moving forward as the ball is struck to create pace and depth. I used to drive my opponents in singles matches nuts when I played tennis with my Wilson Advantage 93 supermidsize graphite racket, running my opponents corner-to-corner during baseline rallies with my one-handed underspin backhand! That's how much control that racket gave me on that shot (in addition to my proper form in hitting the one-handed underspin backhand)!

Lendl is very underrated. I think he should have played the French open in 1990 and 1991 he would still have a chance to win there.

Lendl has a more natural technique compared to Agassi. The Lendl backhand was one of the greatest one handed backhands of all time and his forehand, who had a better forehand then Lendl, hard to find anyone. Maybe his volleys are the only weaker point in his game. But he didn't need to come to the net this often. The lendl serve wasn't the greatest and fastest but it was very consistent and worked on decisive moments.

Lendl en fin de règne, à l'épreuve de la nouvelle génération américaine à la fin des années 80. A l'aise face à des frappeurs comme lui (Courrier, Agassi) moins contre les défenseurs (Chang) et les attaquants (Sampras). Un bon US Open où la seule alerte avant la finale fut contre Chesnokov en 1/8è qui avait des airs de traquenard comme à Roland-Garros. Mais en finale, c'était Becker le plus fort, la bête de noire de Lendl en grand chelem.

One would have to favour agassi over Becker in the final.. 5 long years before the Las vegan won at 'home'

No, I wouldn't/didn't. Agassi always had a great read on Becker's game, but that year Becker was the height of his powers and drive. Agassi had lost both his matches to Becker at that point, and got trounced by Becker at the end of this year at the masters (agassi showed up in his new spandex shorts and one long painted fingernail). Agassi simply didn't have the mental strength or fitness to beat Boris that year. Agassi was actually in a 'sophomore" slump all of 1989. The USO semi's was a big result for him that year as he was struggling.

@@datacipher Agassi was not in a slump, he rose up to No.3 the previous year but 89 was pretty much a year for him to consolidate his place in top 10, he finished the year not great but held on to top 10. Much like any player of his age he had his up and down. Lendl as more of an established player and not really at his best but still a better player than 18/19 years old agassi.

Agassi had yet to beat Becker at this stage, probably because he hadn’t figured out Becker’s “tell” on his serve.

I dreamt I was playing tennis last night. It is a recurring dream where I am trying to serve, but there is o low ceiling above me, so there is not enough height fir the ball toss.
