If a submarine were to collide with an aircraft carrier at full speed, what would the damage be for both ships? Would the submarine survive the impact? And is it even possible for a submarine to collide with an aircraft carrier? You might think it's unlikely, but despite today's advanced navigation and communication technologies, history has already shown us that such incidents are possible. Consider, for example, past incidents where a submarine unexpectedly came into contact with a surface ship. This demonstrates that, although rare, the complexity of maritime operations and human errors can lead to unforeseen situations. Before we delve deeper into such historical events, let's first look at the collision scenario. #aircraftcarrier #submarine #usnavy

I remember being on the Indian Ocean at the Marianna Trench when we were broadsided by a sub, we (USS Jason AR8) shut our engines off so that a sub could tie off next to us. As the sub makes their approach they are literally side by side with us and all they had to do is toss their mooring lines, then all of a sudden and without any warning they start to back away from us to where it looked like a T, then the sub keeps going back and then it starts going forward and then they rammed our port side. Needless to say, they’re whole sonar systems was destroyed and we only had a dent…

March of 1984 the carrier Kitty hawk smacked into a Russian sub. Kitty Hawk had a few scratches, Sub was dead in the water and no propeller.

Mass is one of the two most important factors in that type of collision. But the aircraft carrier, being the more massive, should come out with the lesser amount of damage. But the submarine? Think about a compact car and a semi truck and trailer. Yes the car is going to inflict some damage to the semi truck and trailer, but the more massive weight of the semi makes it harder to damage. So, with that example in mind, we now expand the scale. And then we have the second most predominant factor. Speed. How fast are the two traveling? The faster each is traveling increases the more energy each has at the time of collision. I myself don't know the exact math, but you can figure it out with relative ease. The Submarine suffers more damage than the carrier. But the carrier has some major problems itself. Probably a trip to dry dock for repairs as quickly as possible. But the submarine? Well, you showed some pretty realistic examples of the submarine. Damage to the front end of the hull. Probably destroying the forward torpedo room and tubes, and the forward sonar array. Quite possibly forcing the submarine to the bottom, as shown in the animation. Which depends on where the collision took place. Shallow or deep? This affects recovery of personal and the boat, submarine. Deep = crush depth. And loss of all hands...

like when the USS Kitty Hawk ran down a Russian nuclear attack submarine? they crew felt a bump and some ignored it. later they returned to port and removed one blade imbedded in the hull from the submarines propeller and kept it on display...as for the sub, it was keel hauled, refused assistance was towed back to port and the captain was sent ...somewere...

Try not to be distracted. If you are talking about a submarine colliding with the carrier, this would usually happen underwater. In other words, unless the ship listed, you could conduct flight operations with no problems. So forget any damage to the flight deck or any of its aircraft. The submarine would either strike the carrier with its periscope and other sensors, or the lower parts of the submarine, such as the sail, fins or propellers, or even some part of the hull.

Hard to be sure but a sub at full speed might act as a huge torpedo and do enough damage to sink the carrier. If sub is a nuclear one carrying nuclear mussels that could detonate then not a good outcome of coarse just a guess I'm no expert 😉

It certainly is possible, there have been many incidents and near misses over the years. Especially involving Submarines and Aircraft from opposing Countries. China and the Soviets play chicken and. Perform baffle clearing maneuvers and expect opponents to give way first. Dangerous Games.

I have several friends who happened to be on CVN 71 when they had a bump with Leyte Gulf. Two were on duty at the time, one was in his rack. The friend who was in his rack felt the jolt, heard the alarms going off, people running around.. He looked out and didn't see water on the deck in his berthing area and went back to sleep. It was not a good experience for the CO's on either ship. They said that it smooshed in the aft of the ship where there was an area under the flight deck where smokers could go out and take a puff.

You need to do you homework before making this video. In about 1966 the USS Nautilus (Nuclear Sub) collided while submerged with the USS Essex (Aircraft Carrier) off the SE coast of the US. One sailor on the sub received a broken arm. No one was injured on the carrier. The Sub lost its sail, and the carrier had hole in its port bow that was 9' high and 42' long.
