USB Port Repair and Battery Replacement on a Garmin Nuvi 1300 1350 1400 1450 1490 GPS Navigation

A loose USB port will cause the power to cut off or no power at all, and this is how you fix it.
Items Needed are a Soldering Iron, a T5 Star Shaped Screw Driver, Replacement Battery Pack, Solder, and Soldering Rasin.

off topic question. Ive gota Nuvi 255w and Im getting a bootloop issue after "updating" some of the optional stuff. Like voice and text packages. I ordered a new battery since I already needed one but Im not sure if that had a part in the updating process. The system's storage shows up on my computer but when I boot it up. It gets to a screen (I factory reset it) where I pick my language and so on and if I let it sit on that screen. It goes black (No matter if its plugged in or on the failing battery) and if its on USB itll boot backup but looks. If on battery, it stays off.. Do you think the firmware just needs to be reloaded once I get the new battery, since itd be able to charge and stay on longer to finish the update/reloading? Any help would be awesome, Your videos were a lot of help when I was trying to figure out of the health of my battery and how to change it.

Yes that is exactly what the problem is, the battery can't hold enough charge to finish the update install process and restart. So you can either wait for the battery, or immediately connect it to a car charger as you unplug it from the computer for the update cycle to complete.

Hello! I need help, i cant change voice directions on my garmin, i wanna change voice from ZOE to Samantha but when i am changing Samantha is now working, i can’t understand why, I updated everything on my garmin

Greetings, don’t update it with Garmin express it doesn’t work very well. Try using Garmin web updater program for PC. Garmin web updater will give you a choice of each language and each voice to install.

I have the kit to change the battery 1450...I got the first step done but I couldn't get those little screws unscrewed...I used a very little wd-40 still not able to get the screws out. UGH !!! I really don't know what to do from this point...any ideas?

You have to have the exact size screwdriver that I am using; if the screwdriver is just a little too small, it will damage the screws beyond repair. If the screws are completely stripped, even the right-sized screwdriver will not be able to open it. If that happens, you will need to use a Dremel tool to cut flat slots on the screws and use a flat screwdriver. Doing so will also cut the GPS case, but it will be covered up when you put the bezel over it again. If that is something you don't feel comfortable doing, you can send it to me, and I will open it for you at no cost. Just include a return shipping label so I can use to send it back to you. Thanks

Why would you use garmin instead of using your smart phone for navigation? Is there any advantage to using old dedicated gps unit any more? Some garmin units cannot even connect anymore as 2G has been decommissioned.

because gps runs off of satellites and cell phones have dead spots in coverage. just because it is new doesn't mean it's all that...

Thank you for this. I bought a Garmin 1490 from eBay for $15 & it wouldn't hold a charge & I requested a refund & got it. The seller didn't want it back as there's no money in paying to ship it back, fix it, & sell it again. So I'm willing to fix it & give it a shot. The battery was $14 so if I can fix it I paid $14 for it & got some experience in fixing & soldering which I'm new at. Hopefully when soldering the charge port it goes well for me. That part is going to make me nervous. The battery is coming this week so maybe I'll solder it before it arrives. Thanks & hopefully things go well! I don't know how to update this device though? Do I need a memory card?

Most likely the battery will come with the connector which you simply plug in and no soldering will be required. Yes you do need a memory card if you download the new maps, because it will not fit on it's limited 2GB internal memory.

Turn Off the GPS, Keep your finger on the bottom right corner of the screen and turn it ON, continue to keep you finger there until you get the erase all Data screen, once you get that remove your finger and tap on YES

@@veitkuhn9348 No, it is not the exact same one, but it works for most Garmin units. The exact one is Garmin's Proprietary port, which is not available to the public.
