Students training aid for testing insulation resistance. Demonstration shows how an insulation resistance test could damage a USB socket outlet and how to overcome this. Test voltage is 500V DC and the minimum acceptable value according to BS 7671 is 1 megohms for the whole installation with further investigation when the reading falls below 2 megohms.
Note a 3 lead low earth fault loop impedance test will pickup if you have forgotten to reconnect either the line(s) or neutral(s) of the UBS socket outlet.

I have no idea, yet, of what an insulation resistance test is. I'm 47yr old gaining knowledge. Thanks again for a clear lesson. Happy New Year.

Yay, same tester as mine! Very useful video. More and more inline electronics are slowly but surely being introduced into modern installations. Watch out for smart home technology, soon we'll all be spending lengthy periods testing. Informative stuff.

Yep. It’s only going to increase over time. They need to amend the regs to say IR testing is at 250v instead of 500v

Nice one gaz,great information for even a non sparks like myself 👌👍 so when I get a sparks in to do my periodic test I must remember where I have the usb sockets and let them know 👍 obvs they will see them but suppose it will help to let them know , anything to help and make the job easier 😂👍

Another great video if it was a periodic rather than disconnecting usb sockets or other items that would present a reading would you just test between live conductors together and earth thanks for posting these videos they will help many trainees

Hi. The test you talk about is fine on a periodic inspection but no good on an initial verification when you are required to test all conductors. Thanks for the positive feedback all the best GSH Electrical

Excellent video we fit a lot of these usb sockets at work I did wonder how they tested them, can you tell me when you do an insulation resistance test on a rcbo do you have to disconnect the conductors from the rcbo first or can you leave them in like an mcb cheers

Only coming across this now and this video is great! So just to confirm, when there are sensitive devices fitted off, ie USB socket outlets dimmers downlights fan controller etc…during a periodic test, we are able to test between live conductors and earth ? And this won’t damage this connected devices ?

So if regs say test at double the expected voltage why do we test at 250v. Why not make USB charge sockets only work when socket is on. So we have to remove the socket test an refit my thinking is from back at college re fitting what if the screw cuts in just a bit on refitting the test results are far as am concerns are void. As testing should be don in the manner the installation is used. What possibly is there refitting the cable could be damaged against the back box or refitting the screw.

This disconnection makes a mockery of the testing order as when you put the socket back anything can come loose.

Not just loos a damaged cable against a metallic back box. If she thing just comes loos dead testing R1 R2 reading would show it.

Great video, any chance of doing a video showing how to insulation resistance test a lighting circuit with impulse (touch) and dimmer switches connected to the circuit?
@GSHElectrical
@GSHElectrical 6 жыл бұрын
Hi. These types of equipment need removing from circuit before testing. Easiest way is to put the line and switching line together in the same terminal of the switch so you don’t pass 500 volts through the dimmer. All the best GSH Electrical

Great video, but why do you have to screw the socket back into the box before testing? If you left it out then it would be a reminder to reconnect the neutrals.

I wish the USB components were switched - cannot be beyond the wit of man to design and fit into that 'generous' bit of real estate that is the standard twin 13A socket. I fitted a rise and fall power strip (with USB sockets) to a kitchen island that is switched - very happy with that.

A USB socket doesn't need to have it's own switch, why not just have say the right hand 240V socket switch the USB outlets at the same time? Unless I am missing something? Or why not a three position switch? Off, 240 socket on, and 240 socket on with the USB on.

I have to wonder if there is any truth to the claim that a 500v test could damage electronic equipment? As JW has done a video showing how he tested a smoke alarm at 500v and 1000v and the smoke alarm still worked as intended, also Nick Bundy had done a video showing how he tested LED lamps and LED driver again at 500v and 1000v and yes they still work as intended. So is it not doubtful that the insulation resistance test could or will damage such equipment? But I have to agree it’s better to these line and neutral combined to earth or if possible remove such equipment from circuit. Great video as always Gaz 👍👍👍👍❤️

im niceic .Heres a thought ,How do these sockets even comply?When is it acceptable to have any transformer permanently wired to a ring main for eg with no fuse in line taking it down or means of local isolation?

So if it's an existing circuit you would leave it connected and would only test live and neutral combined to earth. how would you write this on the certificate if the boxes are just live to live and live to earth

Why would you screw the cover back on the socket for full insulation resistance testing, it would seem sensible to me that if the cover is not screwed on when i do a visual check that I need to do something with that socket?

@@topchannel1000 IR testing sends a charge through the wire, the better the insulation the longer that charge will be stored in the wire even once the tester has been removed so yes it can be dangerous if there is a risk of someone removing the socket and holding the wires but as most of my Electrical work is done with the customer out of the house and the fact that i run a discharge through the circuit straight after I guess I deem the risk to be minimal - Equipment should be discharged (shunted or shorted out) for at least as long as the test voltage was applied in order to be absolutely safe for the person conducting the test.

@@paultaylor4032 yes I know I would not put the cover on for IR but they dit not allow me to do that when i was training

I don't understand these daft USB sockets. Who in their right mind wants loads of permanently connected 5v power supplies all over their house. Until manufacturers start switching the USB sockets, I won't touch them.
