Sometimes, some features need enhancing or tweaking before they can be printed. Luckily, the create face groups feature in Meshmixer makes selecting these complex areas a snap!

Great video! Click the little "S" icon (bottom-left of the transform gizmo) to turn on snapping, and you will be able to move in precise increments. The A icon toggles absolute/relative mode (relative is what you would want if you want to move in increments from the starting point, vs in the world grid). If you want more snap points, use the up and down arrow keys. You can also use the Soft Transform tool to resize features based on face groups.

Ah! I had forgotten how to turn that on, awesome! Makes it way more accurate. Cheers!

It you check on the green 'S', that will enable snap. And then you can deform down by exactly how much you want.

I was trying to do this last night and when double clicking the facegroup, the selection was also selecting triangles that BORDERED the facegroup. In your example with the dragon head it would have grabbed all the triangles in the dragon and all triangles that shared an edge with the dragon. For what I wanted to do, that was VERY problematic. I wad trying to cleanly remove some interior detail on a hollow part so I could fill it in. The facegroups were made correctly, but double clicking on select was behaving badly. Has this changed in the past 3 years? my version of meshmixer is whatever was new about 6 months ago.

How well would this work on filling in text on a curved surface? I have a file I am looking at working with and want to fill in the text they have put on the surface. I started working with it in meshmixer (which i know little to nothing about) while following another tutorial found on youtube that suggested I just select all of the triangles by hand and then delete and use the inspector to auto-repair the surface (which leaves a faint outline of the letters and some crazy geometry). This method has proved to be extremely time consuming considering the model is meant to fit in your hand and doesnt have that much text but has a lot of individual triangles to select.

Hi Angus. I know this videos are a quite bit old but I am learning a lot thru them. I am already selecting pieces, creating groups and etc very easily now, but I am still missing the knowledge on how to properly separate some pieces on an STL. Its not simply a plain cut. For example, I am importing a Home Simpson and I want to separate his eyes to print in another color. Just selecting, creating facegroup then generating complex and spliting it give me kind of a good result, but the back of the eye follows the front eye curvature, and I would like it to be flat to print easily without supports and would be easier to fit back. So, how could I cut an eye of a figure, in a way that is has at least 2mm high, flat back surface to print and also leave the hole on the face the same way to fit back... do you have any video that shows that ? Any training I could do. I am really in need of this knowledge, has studied lot, went try a dozen of videos but no one explains that. Thank you !

Hi Angus, finally bought the Up! Mini commercialized by PP3DP :). So in what orientation would you print the final model showed in this video? And how would you make latches that can be easily made in 3D printing for this kind of enclosures? printing enclosures is quite of ineffective and difficult. Specially adding that kind of carved logos. Any tips? . Also, what's the difference between open / closed extruded fan? How to print pieces in abs without a raft? Can I print directly to the heatbed? So Many doubts! Thanks!??

+SaturnAR Nice! For this model You could do it with text on the side to get better definition, or text on the top for an easier print but less definition. There's always trade-offs! To answer your other questions, I usually do what's called a lip and groove for boxes and lids, it's quite common in electronics cases - and a screw and boss to secure in place. For the UP! Mini printing raft-less is quite difficult, make sure your bed is nice and level and get yourself some 'buildtak' to stick over the perforated bed. Getting the nozzle height dead on is hard but it is possible! To be honest I always just print with a raft it's so much easier and ABS is pretty cheap. Keep the fan closed unless you find pulling the raft + support away is too difficult, as having it open can make the part warp more. Hope that helps!

+Maker's Muse by the way, printing this model with text on the side of top wouldn't add a lot of support material? I'm currently printing enclosures with the text side on the bottom (tbh no text for now, just the plane face).

Haha don't worry, meshmixer is a heaps handy tool - if you have even just a vague idea of how to use it when your printer arrives, you'll be way ahead! What printer did you get?

Maker's Muse I backed the Cobblebot on kickstarter, but I'm pretty nervous as they aren't great at communication and have moved the goal posts a few times.
