I've had good experiences with both the Walmart's Expert Gardener (30-0-6 +2%) and Lowe's "Stah"-Green (29-0-5 +2%) fertilizers this year.* Hard to beat the walk-in and pick-up aspect of them. *Trying to nurse a soul-patch of 90-year-old Oklahoma Bermuda back to health during the warmest, earliest spring in 30 years (or so I'm told). Hence the two applications of 15 lbs. bags over 7500 sq ft by mid May. But hey, it went from 10% coverage to 30% to now 60%. I'll take that.

this is the 2nd year at the new house. The ground is so bumpy (like in between the rows where the sod was laid). This makes the mower bump all over the place scoring the grass along the way. I feel like the color would be very good if it wasn't for that. Going to need to level at some point but it's like the whole yard needs it. Very frustrating. I may need to just raise the height of the mower until the scoring stops but can't get it short and thick like I want it.

I am beginning to think that fertilizer might not be needed once the lawn is established. If you mulch your clippings and your soil is relatively healthy, your grass should get the nutrients it needs from that and the sun. Why fertilize only to have to mow three times as much? I think fertilizer is good for weak and new lawns, but once that bermuda thickens up, why fertilize every four weeks and blow $80 on a bag of fertilizer (which is what the brand names are going for now...)
@BudgetLawns

@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns Жыл бұрын
Thanks man. No, not too low. It likes it that low. It’ll just be tougher to keep a dark green color. I’ve found my sweet spot is somewhere around 1-1.25. If I can get my new lawn smooth enough at some point I may go a little lower but with a manual reel to get low low it needs to be pretty smooth.

I just did a verticut yesterday and I have someone coming to do core aerating on Monday. I have top dressing a 30/70 blend at the house ready to go. my question is after Verticutting yesterday and core aerating this coming Monday should I put down the topsoil right away or should I wait for the lawn to heal? Also, can I apply fertilizer to the lawn after doing this the last time I applied fertilizer was two weeks ago.

If it’s looking like flooding downpours, I will hold off. But it’s hard to know where the worst will hit. I got 3 inches at my house in a couple hours on the 4th, while some people got just a little. But with that said, most of the time, with rain in the forecast, I’ll go ahead and apply.

The northwest part of the state is definitely the best part. Not much through central arkansas that I’m crazy about. However, if you don’t mind a short jump out of the way to Hot Springs, it’s not too far west of 30. By far the best option through there. Bathhouse row has some awesome restaurants, breweries, and hotels. Hot Springs is one of of the country’s first resorts. @@BudgetLawns Ok. for shits and giggles, lets say you cleaned out the drains after ferting. I would have thought that if it was a thought at all. it would have been easier to have covered them in the first place. That being said. I'm sure with all the rain you said you got afterwards, you weren't to concerned about the transport of fert into those from run off.
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns Жыл бұрын
You're really gonna do this? You Grass Factor fanboys are so predictable. Don't be like Harper Explores who only comments when he's trying to "get me". It's weak. Ask him what happened last time. His efforts are teetering on desperately pathetic. He deleted this last one after I responded. Why would I cover them when I want to clean them out a handful of times a season as regular maintenance? What better time than when I apply product to the lawn. There's a sump in the catch basin for a reason...to catch loose sediment, grass clippings, etc... Not to mention the corrugated pipe. Not saying any fert can't make it the entire journey to the storm drains, but I would highly doubt it is in significant amounts. As far as runoff, you're really stretching here trying to back me into a corner. If you guys spent an ounce of the energy where it's really needed you might result in some change. But going after a guy who's already taking into account as many environmentally safe practices as possible is misdirected attention. I applied product on Saturday. It got a nice steady 1/2 inch of rain on Sunday midday. Later that afternoon it received another 1/2 inch. Not heavy downpours. The next round of rain didn't come until Friday after the fert had already been well watered in. That day saw a surprising 1.5 inches of rain, hence my mention of inches for the week. I will not apply if strong storms or heavy flooding rain is forecasted to do my best to prevent runoff. On the flipside, if you water your lawn products in, the water conservationists come after you for wasting water. You can only do so much. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I shouldn't even entertain you with such a long explanation, but I hope it will serve as further education for folks who need more on this topic. Do you feel better now? ha
