As a dermatologist I don't think any oil helps whether it's castor oil or coconut oil or almond oil or olive oil helps in growth of the hair. All these oils are good as a probably conditioner . So when you apply to the hair as such they prevent sun bleaching for the hair and they give a probably a good conditioner for the hair, keep the moisture within the hair and when you wash it the next day gives a good glow and shine to the hair. But applying to the scalp I think it's just a belief in fact when you don't wash off these castor oil or coconut oil or anything leaving it more than overnight and going out they can attract the dust and the dirt from the environment and diesel particles which settle on the scalp and in turn cause hair fall and itchy scalp and dandruff also can be caused by it. So we do not recommend to leave the oil more than that and especially castor oil if you apply to your scalp imagine the friction you need to use to wash it off and the amount of detergent or the shampoo you need to use by so much of friction and using so much of detergent itself because the oil is thick doing this you'll be losing more hair. So if you really want you can apply to the shaft of the hair and I don't recommend personally to be used into the scalp majorly.
