Use Pro Tools Without ASIO Interface & Record USB Mic (ANY ASIO DAW)

How to use Pro Tools without an ASIO audio interface, and how to record a USB microphone in Pro Tools. This method works with any ASIO DAW on Windows (Studio One, Cubase, FL Studio, etc...)

We all know Pro Tools works best on Windows with an ASIO interface. ASIO is low latency and pretty stable.
But, there are times when you want to use Pro Tools without an audio interface and hear Pro Tools through your computer speakers.
There are various drivers that allow you to do this (ASIO4ALL, FL Studio Driver etc...) some work well, other don't.
For this method we will use Voicemeeter Potato, it's free to use.
Set the A1 Hardware Output in Voicemeeter Potato to your computer speakers, either WDM or MME (Realtek for example)
In Pro Tools, set your Playback Engine to Voicemeeter Virtual ASIO.
Activate A1 for the output under Voicemeeter VAIO.
You should now hear Pro Tools through your computer speakers.
Then, if you want to record a USB Microphone into Pro Tools, create a Mono Audio track and set the input to VM-VAIO 1.
Under Hardware Input 1 in Potato, set the input device to your USB mic.
Activate B1 on the mic track in Potato.
Arm the track in Pro Tools and record your USB mic directly into Pro Tools.
You might want to use headphones or mute the output of your computer speakers, otherwise you will get feedback.
Voicemeeter Potato is capable of so much more, and it even works in conjunction with an ASIO interface.
But if all you want if a way to use Pro Tools without an audio interface, using Voicemeeter Potato is an easy way to do so.

Def subbed, just curious so can you do this live processing while on a live stream for example? For instance, if the mic sounds too high, you can increase the lows? and the listeners would hear it live? Or is this only for recording only to upload later?

Having an issue when trying to record a vocals track with an instrumental track in Protools, when I go to record the vocals, it picks up every bit of the instrumental track. I am using headphones and a USB mic.

hey man thanks for the vid although I have a problem, both my input and output are 'vaio 1-2' so I'm getting feedback when using 'I' to hear my instrument, my other output options are vaio 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8, how can I set it to my output is different and get a sound? cheers man

When I go to switch the playback device, I get an error message saying something like "protools can't set the sample rate" and I can't open projects with the voicemeeter as my playback device, any suggestions?

You need to make sure it set to your speaker/headphones 1024, and not just set to your interface

Would there be any way to record from my Scarlett Solo and my Blue Snowball USB mic without restarting Pro Tools every time I wanna switch?

Assuming the Blue Snowball has drivers to be an audio interface (i've never used one personally), then NO. Anytime you switch the Playback Engine you must restart Pro Tools. Since you have the Scarlette Solo, why not get a cheap (or expansive) XLR Condenser mic to replace the Snowball? This mic amzn.to/2Xq4cNy should sound at least as good as the snowball. MXL makes some affordable mics. And the AT2020 is $99 and a very popular choice.

This solution is Windows only. Mac uses Core Audio, so you can set things up at the system level usually.

Sounds like a feedback loop. If your speakers are turned up and your mic is in the same room, you'll get a feedback loop. Use headphones.

either one should work. If that's not it, try holding down the 'N' key when launching Pro Tools and set the correct playback engine.

Not directly. You could set the audio interface at the Audio Engine for Voicemeeter and you should be able to use a USB mic that way. But if you have an interface, I would suggest getting a standard XLR microphone.

@@revenueflow I found a roundabout for my usb mic and the interface.If your mic has a headphone jack,use an aux cable to connect that to one of the inputs in the interface. Dont forget to tweak the i/o accordingly in your DAW

On Windows Pro Tools will look for an ASIO interface. If you don't have one, you can use ASIO4ALL or the FL Studio ASIO driver.

depending on the sample rete of the session you are creating, go to potato menu / system settings ,options / and change preferred main sample rate to the one you will use in your session, this worked for me, hope it works for u

There will be latency if you listen through the DAW, but most USB mics let you monitor directly from the mic which would be zero latency, basically.
