In this soap making video, I show you how I color handmade soap blue 100% naturally.
Indigo powder is an ancient natural dye that can produce shades of blue ranging from light blue to dark blue, depending on how much you use.
Indigo is derived from the leaves of the indigofera tinctoria plant.
In cold process soap making, indigo can be used to color soap by making an oil infusion, or by adding the indigo powder to the lye solution.
Adding the powder to the lye solution is easier, faster and produces a more vivid shade of blue in the final soap. To avoid speckles, the powder has to be completely incorporated into the soap batter and blended well.
When using indigo to color handmade soap blue, it is important to use light colored oils in your recipe. Using lots of yellow colored oils or fats, like extra virgin olive oil or cocoa butter, can affect the final color. Forcing the soap to go through gel phase will make the color more deep & vibrant.
With indigo, a little goes a long way. If you use too much powder, it will bleed from the final soap, color the lather blue and possibly stain fabrics that come into contact with the soap.
Buy indigo powder on amazon: amzn.to/3yJb1eb
I bought my indigo powder from www.wonkyweaver.com/, as recommended by the author of the blog post below.
I created this soap with some help from this blog post by lovely lovely greens: lovelygreens.com/indigo-soap-...
Indigo history facts source: blog.fabrics-store.com/2020/0...
I calculate my soap recipes with this lye calculator: soapee.com/calculator
Please wear proper safety equipment when making soap.
○ Cold process indigo soap recipe:
Total batch weight ~700 g
200 g olive oil (40%)
150 g coconut oil (30%)
125 g refined shea butter (25%)
25 g castor oil (5%)
70.8 g sodium hydroxide
120 g frozen distilled water
(37% lye concentration, 4% superfat)
¼ tsp indigo powder
10 ml fragrance or essential oil for a light scent (I used 'simply fresh' by gracefruit)
Cure the soap for 4-6 weeks before using on your skin.

The ingredient being indigo was unexpected! And yet, I came across it during my soap ingredients shopping session but missed it. I'm curious, doesn't it bleed onto skin over time? I'm asking because this indigo powder is sold by my regular merchant as a complement to henna for hair coloration.
@tellervo.
@tellervo. 2 жыл бұрын
No it doesn't bleed at all - as long as you don't use too much. There are two kinds of indigo powders. As far as I know, the blue one can be used to color soap, and the green one is used for hair coloration among other things

Hello, the video is very nice, thank you for sharing it. I only have one question. Use the calculator for soaps and make a comparison with the measurements of the ingredients, the only thing that comes out differently is the amount of water: in one it comes out 169G and in another 190. But here you tell us 120. What is the difference? ?? I await your valuable response, thank you very much.
@tellervo.
@tellervo. 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you☺ There is no set amount of water so you can use any of them, but there are lots of benefits to using less water, like being able to unmold the soap faster and overall I think it produces a nicer bar of soap. The numbers you have there are very high, if you want to use more water I would suggest a 33% lye concentration which is about 140 g water for this recipe. If you want to use 120 g of water, plug in ‘37% lye concentration’ in a lye calculator.
