Thanks for your feedback! It really is the "ideal" schedule. Of course, most people work and won't be able to follow this 24/7, but on the weekends or if you have a neighbor coming to let the puppy out (which is necessary anyway the first few months) then it is helpful to have a routine like this set in place. Hopefully it is a helpful resource to you! Use it as a starting point and guiding tool to point you in the right direction!

Overall another great video John! I just would like to mention a couple of things especially for new owners. Instead of training your 8 weeks old puppy for 15 minutes straight, start with 1-2 minute sessions (if you can multiple times throughout the day). As they age you can increase the time to 5-10 minutes and more later. All depending on the focus of your dog. Also I wouldn't worry so much about teaching behaviors (like sit or down) at this young age, instead focus on engagement and building a relationship with you. This is especially important if you plan on training a working Doberman, participate in sports and so on (but it is all very beneficial for pet dogs as well). If you're dog is engaged with you, teaching behaviors is a piece of cake. And it will help you to work through any upcoming issues later (teenage time...). Also important to end your training session while your puppy is still focused and engaged, don't wait until they get tired and check out. This will help to keep them excited about training.

There is no such thing as a perfect Doberman. I’ve had five and they’re all different. Just like there are no perfect human beings. There are no perfect children. And if we expect perfection from anyone or anything, it only leads to disappointment. But each Doberman has its own personality and they’re all precious. They are great companions, their intelligence is beyond what we really understand. I absolutely love Dobermans and have had such great loving companionships with everyone of them. I miss not having one. I’m older now and I don’t know if I really have the energy to train a puppy. But I really do miss not having a Doberman. They’re the sweetest, most loving, intelligent, funny, well behaved and the greatest companions.

My 4 year old female Goliath sized Dobbie thinks my nap time is her nap time. 😂 We first wake up at 6amish, I take her out (to go potty), I eat breakfast, then it's her time to eat (I make her do a few commands first). No lunch for her, but it's cuddled/playtime after I eat (if she doesn't need to potty). Dinner time is just like breakfast time except after we go to sleep at 9pm (it's when I take the last of my seizure pills & she goes out). Got her at 2 years old, she's lived up to the title of velcro dog even then (moreso now).

So I'm a medical student that's doing a gap year and getting a Doberman puppy in 2 months (I had a Golden Retriever when I was young and now I already have a 5-year-old Japanese Akita). I'm working on making a perfect schedule that will work well for me and my new puppy, so I would really appreciate it if you could look at it and tell me if I'm doing a decent job. 8 am waking up -> taking her out to a backyard to pee -> food -> 1h walk to tire her a little so I can study 2pm -> lunch -> taking her out 7:30pm -> dinner -> taking her for a long walk along with my Akita In between these, I will also include little 15-30min training sessions and some play/bonding time. Thank you so much in advance and your videos are really great and helpful!!!
@appaloosatexas3254
@appaloosatexas3254 Жыл бұрын
I'm assuming the puppy will be about 8 weeks old. You should plan to take them out like every hour for the first few weeks, unless they are asleep. One hour long walks are way too much for an 8 weeks old puppy. 10 to 15 minute are more appropriate at this age. Time increases as puppy gets older. Playtime will probably tire them out better. Training sessions should be short (start with 1-2 minutes, if possible multiple times throughout the day). Puppies that young can't focus for 15 minutes straight. You have to build it over time. I also suggest having a crate and an ex-pen. Puppy could stay in ex pen (supervised) when you have to study. Good luck!

Hi John, excellent video… Question, I’m planning on bringing in a Doberman puppy home and I’m worried about the schedule, I work a 9-5 job and although I will have a family member at home to take care of feedings and bathroom runs, I’m concerned that the pup will bond more with that family member. And also I would only be able to do a training session in the AM and later in the evening and on weekends… Would this be a deal breaker, should I re-consider bringing in this pup?

I have been watching your video's for weeks getting ready to get my Doberman "puppy" and I love all the great info! My question is I'm getting (actually got her today) at the age of 7 months. What does it look like and how should things go when you are starting with them at that age and don't really know what their first months were like? I do know I got her from a very reputable breeder, and that she was mostly kennel raised. Now she is in a house with other dogs and doesn't want to come in the main rooms with us and stays in her crate. I know it's the first day so I've not been pushing it but when should I start working with her? Sorry long comment LOL.
@appaloosatexas3254

Give her time. It may take several weeks for a dog to settle in a new home. I would separate her from the other dogs for now and later introduce one dog at the time. As far as training goes, for the first few weeks, I would focus on engagement and building a relationship with your dog. And do that one on one without the other dogs. If she is 7 months old and has spent her time mostly in a kennel, she may have missed out on the critical socialization period. I would introduce her slowly to new things.

Be a calm and consistent leader. Work on engagement with your dog. You want to be the most interesting thing in the world for your dog. In the meantime I would not let them rehearse the behavior (not coming when recalled) and keep them on leash (maybe long line depending on the situation).

Hello! I wanted to ask if you would recommend a Doberman in this situation. I’m an 20 year old girl and I’m planning on moving out from my parents house soon, and since I’m np going to be alone I was thinking about getting a companion that would both protect me and be there for me. I mostly work from home and would have a lot of time to go out with the dog, and I would be willing to train it and everything. I’ve already researched the breed for a few weeks. The only real concern I have is the fact that I’ve never actually met a Doberman, and I’ve only every had 3 Great Danes, and an aggressive lil Chihuahua, and even then they were all family pets. Along with the fact that I done know where to find s good breeder. I have my heart set on a Doberman but I’m not quite sure yet. I would love to hear your opinions on this because it may determine weather I even get a dog or not lol
@appaloosatexas3254
@appaloosatexas3254 Жыл бұрын
Your situation sounds pretty good timewise. I you're committed to spending several hours a day on training and exercise, it should work out. Dobermans have definitely a lot more energy than Great Danes. So it would be good to get to know the breed first. A great way to do that is to foster one. There are plenty of Doberman rescues out there who are always looking for foster homes. Also, they usually cover veterinary expenses and maybe more. So, if you can make a temporary commitment, that would be a great way to get to know the breed and help a dog in need.

Thanks for your feedback, Michael! It really is the "ideal" schedule and works for the retired crowd, virtual workers, or those with a stay at home spouse (or teenager in the summer when off school). Of course, people have to work and won't be able to follow this "to a T", but on the weekends or if you have a neighbor coming to let the puppy out (which is necessary anyway the first few months) then it is helpful to have a routine like this set in place. Hopefully it is a helpful resource to you! Use it as a starting point and guiding tool to point you in the right direction!

My main question is why do you always clip your dogs ears and tails? It has no value other than aesthetics for the owner and it just seem cruel. If you love Dobermans so much why not let them be in their natural body?

I'm wondering about that too. He seems to love dogs so much, but in fact he abuses them.

No way a person that needs to work can follow this schedule . This is why perhaps they should not get a pup…

Biting my Doberman is an American / European mix and I can’t seem to calm him down. When he starts biting, I put toys in his mouth, but he loves chewing on me it’s painful, I have tried everything I can think of, but he just flips out and starts biting harder! This is the main problem I have with Zeke 🤔
