Yep, dictionaries, both paper and online ones tend to translate 'ya' as 'already'. This confused me a lot when I first starting learning Spanish because ya can mean so many other things and tends to more often than not mean 'now', as you so expertly demonstrate here. A nice little video, Maura.

In Mexico they use ahorita to mean now, soon, in a little while, etc. Would be interesting to do this video with Paulisima as a duo so we can understand the different uses of Ya in each country😅

Yeah! We use it just the same. "Ahorita" is a very open word than just means "somewhat soon". Very Latin American. We love doing videos together when we can, so that's always a good idea! Thanks a lot for sharing =)=)=)

I think "ya" is much more flexible than the English adverbs "soon" "already" and "now". I think if you really look at the English translations in the first three minutes of the video, you'll find that we don't really talk like that in English. We say "I'll be RIGHT back"; "I'll call you in a minute" (soon ahí suena forzado...you hit the nail on the head when you said "Ya is like saying 'give me a minute and I'll call you'); "Are you ready YET?" (I can't see myself asking someone "Are you ready NOW?"). People would probably say "It's time NOW to commune with your conscience" instead of "It's already time."

Why is "ya va" the equivalent of "ya voy"? I understand that in English we would say "I'm coming" whereas in Spanish you would say "I'm going", but "va" is the third person singular so I don't see how that applies. How does "he/she/you are going" come to mean "I'm coming"?
@MauraSpringSpanish
@MauraSpringSpanish Жыл бұрын
Hi Rick! That's a very good question! You can use "ya voy" and it'll work perfectly. "Ya va" is only an alternative, which can also mean: wait. This alternative, though, could have two inferred meanings which depend on the context. When it means "wait" the inferred subject would be "eso o ello" (it) and the idea would be: "ya va a pasar" (it's going to happen), talking about whatever is being asked. If you're talking about a person like "ella o él" (she or he) then it would mean: she/he's comming. I hope this helps! =)=)=)
@kkayaker
@kkayaker Жыл бұрын
@@MauraSpringSpanish OK, thanks, I think I've got it. It makes sense to me to think of it as a short form of "ya va a pasar", rather than using the royal "we" as in "he/she is coming" when referring to oneself. Por cierto, me encantan tus videos. Gracias por haciendolos.
