USED Car PCP & HP vs NEW Car Lease | Car Finance Comparison
Is there still great value available to you when leasing a new car? or is a PCP on a nearly new used car going to be a better deal?
In this car finance comparison video we compare PCP and HP on a used car vs a lease deal on a brand-new car. Car leasing vs PCP is not a new question and it's one I've covered in the past on my channel but it's good to keep these things fresh and lots of people in the comments have been asking me to compare a nearly new used car on traditional finance products vs a lease on a new car to try and look at the immediate and longer term costs.
You'll see that whilst the HP deal appears to be expensive you must remember that you're financing almost the whole purchase price of the car whilst with the PCP you're really only financing around half of the price initially with a further lump sump to find if you decide to keep the car.
Is car leasing better than traditional car finance? can leasing a new car save you money vs buying a used car? do the numbers and decide for yourself. Car leasing is also known as Personal Contract Hire of PCH whilst PCP is also known as Personal Contract Purchase, HP is Hire Purchase and then of course there's always the option of a car loan / bank loan.
✅ I hope you find this useful, as always, for the best lease deals I always use ✅ 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗼 : leaselo.co/notaguru-personal-... ✅
Leasing vs owning a car, in a fight between car lease vs pcp which one wins? well there's no clear winner for everyone, it all depends on your budget, your appetite for risk, and your personal feelings on ownership. I hope this video gets you thinking before you simply go ahead and do what you always did.

I do appreciate your clear information around the ever difficult to navigate PCP -v- HP - v - Lease. I’ve been trying to convince my other half, who likes to own everything to agree to leasing our next car. Using the calculator and spreadsheet as per your video I feel it will help us both. As I love cars so buy with heart and not head. Other half no interest in cars just the cost. Thanks again, great channel!

Thank you 🙏 leasing won’t be the answer 100% of the time but it’s misunderstood by many and is often a great alternative - especially if you’re after a great deal rather than a very specific car.

Thanks very much. That’s a great idea that I have considered but probably very tricky as where I live would be a very different prospect to someone living in central London - both in terms of cost and it actually being viable.

Nice update video. Yes I’m definitely changing my view on Leasing instead of PCP and you have given us the tools to quickly understand the differences. At least people can get out of a PCP easier cheaper than a lease contract as i think many may soon be ditching their expensive cars to pay the mortgage!
@DefinitelyNotAGuru
@DefinitelyNotAGuru Жыл бұрын
I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind, just hope to get more people thinking rather than purely listening to commission lead salespeople who have targets to hit. It’s not always cheaper to exit a PCP, especially if you don’t want to jump straight into another with the same company. Leasing is not perfect either.

Super useful content as always. Currently in the situation of finding my next car. Looking at lease or used PCP at the moment. Concept I am getting my head around is leasing seems the cheapest option, but you still need to factor in the deposit for the next lease. Im adding that to my total cost as to me, it is part of the process. But still, leasing comes out slightly cheaper.
@DefinitelyNotAGuru
@DefinitelyNotAGuru Жыл бұрын
Cheers Jason, thanks for watching and commenting mate. Yes, I see what you mean, it's a factor in PCP too really when you think about it and don;t just listen to the car salesman. You could always put £30 per month away to cover your next deposit if you were so inclined.

That's interesting, l own a Mercedes and I've just calculated the service , the cost of the repairs to get it through the MOT which to be honest was silly money. I was always worried about the next repair bill coming in over 2.5 thousand as l noticed a faulty auto gearbox. I think l am looking to lease a car due to the initial purchase price and possibly repair bills when the car comes out of warranty. Think whichever way you go it's a money pit that you will never get back . I'm just wishing l never spent all that money over the years on cars l could be more comfortable without all the financial worries l have now . It was the option of spending thousands on a car or giving it away to the wife, thinking spending it on a car was the best option in the end , think she has enough handbags and shoes , hope she doesn't read this otherwise it's the dog house again .😮

It’s not so different for an LTD, just that you can claim 100% against your taxable income(CT) in year one if it’s a new car or 18% for 5.5 years if it’s used. You will then likely have to pay company car tax however. Speak to your accountant!

First off thanks for your videos they are informative and gave me food for thought when purchasing my latest vehicle. Although leasing is a great option the numbers don’t work for every car. Certain cars will be worth a lot more than the balloon payment offered at the end of a PCP agreement (think fuel efficient high trims, cars on a long waiting list or in high demand and king warranty), especially if you look to switch after 2 years. At that stage you don’t have to buy the car or give it back but you can sell it to the dealer and get back the difference and sail away into the sunset or use it on a deposit for the next car and not necessarily with the same dealer or brand I might add. If you’ve calculated it correct that difference should match your original deposit meaning you’ve only paid the monthly amount for the time you’ve had the car. With leasing every penny spent doesn’t go towards your next purchase. As someone quite rightly pointed out in the comments, you can get the Qashqai everywhere cheap and it’s always available hence why the cheaper leasing deals are easier to acquire. But what if I don’t want a Qasqai or a DS? What if I want something more specific to me? Whatever the case may be it’s good to do the math and weigh up the options. I thank you Jim for allowing me to learn more about the business of buying or leasing a car.
@DefinitelyNotAGuru
@DefinitelyNotAGuru Жыл бұрын
Thanks; the point is not to push leasing but to get people to think twice before signing up for something that suits the salesperson more than it suits them. The Qashqai is cheap but that’s largely irrelevant as the price is the price no matter how it is financed. The discount would also be there on a PCP on a new one - perhaps disguised as a dealer contribution. The differences in price are HUGE in many of these comparisons. There is no universal deal that will make you better off; this is about getting people to think twice and run the numbers. 👍

Good work as usual Jim - very useful comparison. Only thing I would add on the PCP info is that mileage is only really relevant if you are forced to give the car back before the end of the term. Otherwise the car is worth whatever it’s worth as a part ex at the end of the term - there is of course a risk that the residual value ends up lower than the finance balance…

@rusty911s2 Жыл бұрын
The mileage makes a huge difference to your monthly payments on lease and PCP as this dictates the future value of the car. It doesn't affect HP as if you end up with a star-ship mileage car at the end, it's your problem, not the finance company's.
@jlaitan
@jlaitan Жыл бұрын
@@rusty911s2 agree - what I meant was if you drive 20000 miles per year, you don’t need to contact and pay for 20000 miles per year on a PCP deal if you plan to keep or part-ex the car at the end. It only really comes into play if you have to hand the car back.
@rusty911s2
@rusty911s2 Жыл бұрын
@@jlaitan I'm with you. That said, that completely negates a PCP. If anyone intends to keep the car at the end, go HP as PCP is a dreadful way of financing an actual purchase as effectively you're doing a 60 or even 72 month HP split over two agreements. If you're high mileage and can't afford HP, go ex-demo / 1 or 2 year old instead.
@mrmiruk

Great response and people always forget when buying car (used or new) even if you keep it 10years, what happens when you do sell it? You would have had to save up the money to buy the next car and its likely in 10 years you will have to have saved up even more due to inflation (to buy a equivlent car)! Adding that into the equation and leasing isn't much more expensive and in some cases is on par with a used car. This is coming from a guy whose owned the same car the last 12 years and looking at a new car

Great video as always. Lots of my friends & family always moan about leasing a car as its "not yours" but I love leasing. I have sent your videos to them! I also ordered a new car this week thanks to your weekly deals, cheers!

A lot of people struggle with the concept as it's alien to them and seems like utter madness, just like it did to me the first time I heard about it. Nothing is going to be for everyone but for those who take the time to understand it, it's another great option to consider.

Currently on my fourth lease car. Love being able to drive a new car every two years that I wouldn't otherwise be able to afford.

Great video, one addition for future videos might be what happens in the next 3 yrs. For your lease and pcp options, those models just repeat. But obviously, with HP if you’re paid up after 3 yrs you only have running costs for the next 3. I feel like the knock on saving of owning is missed in those near term projections. Just to caveat, I’m watching these videos bc I’m disastrously inexperienced at buying cars. So there may be further factors to consider in this point. Thanks for a great vid.

Thanks for your research on this mate. Really thought provoking content! I do feel like the Qashqais are consistently cheap to lease - I wonder how the numbers would stack up on a similarly priced Focus or Golf? Lease prices are often £400+/month

Cheers Chris, hopefully this video gives you an idea how to find out. Number 1 deal of leasing is shop for the deal and not the car👍

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru so you’d say is it better to be open to a wider choice of cars?
@DefinitelyNotAGuru

@@chrismantonuk 100%, leasing doesn’t always make sense if you’re fixed on one particular car. If you’re open to ideas you can sometimes find a far better car for your budget than you previously had in mind.
