So, how do prices compare to where you are?
@carlosalbuquerque5672
@carlosalbuquerque5672 2 ай бұрын
From what I have seen the UK has the lowest prices in Europe for used cars. In Portugal cars are very expensive because they have very high taxes wright from the start. Also because of the friendly climate cars age very slowly if you take care of them. How the care looks inside is a good tell signe of how previous owners took care of them.

I 100% agree that tax policy in Portugal is predatory. There must however be something else to it. In Denmark where I currently live you pay 106% tax on a new car yet they're still cheaper than in Portugal, what gives?
@carlosalbuquerque5672
@carlosalbuquerque5672 2 ай бұрын
@@ramiroborges7359 I really don,t know. The fact that you can easilly fing a car with 20 years with no rust may be a factor. On the other hand you can insure your car easily between 150 to 250 euros a year.

Cars in Portugal are very expensive because of taxation. Buying new is a commitment that sets you back almost half the average salary, and often for almost a decade. So people tend to make the most of it either by driving the hell out of them or reselling at high value. Furthermore, the import taxes on used cars are also high and, believe it or not illegal. Portugal as already been fined by the European Union several times by violating the treaties on free market laws, but as the legal processes are costly and dead slow, not many people have the means to go against the State, as a result the income in taxation is superior to the value of the fines, so in the end "it is worth it".

Cars here don't go rotten like they do in the UK because the roads are not salted in the winter and all licenced car dealers have to give 12 month warranty no matter how old the car is, so in a way your paying for the warranty in the high prices but road tax is cheap here and yes it hurts the first time you buy a car here but they hold their value for years

Hello David Do you have to pay road tax and NCT (MOT)? If so, can you renew it in Portugal. If I was to move to Portugal with a EU vehicle (Ireland). Thanks.

@@sharonhennessy8868 There is road tax and MOT in Portugal... the only way you can do MOT on a foreign car in Portugal is as part of the process of matriculation to Portuguese plates.

I've been researching car prices in central Portugal for a while preparing for our move later this year. The prices for used cars are really high compared to the US where used cars are already considered to be expensive. The price difference between a newer used car and and a brand new car in Portugal isn't a lot. Both new and used car prices in Portugal seem to be crazy high!

I've been trying to figure out the price to pay and deciding if I can sell it after a few years. From what I've learned, the Portuguese car market is competitive. As long as you maintain it, it holds some value. A notable aspect is the condition of some of these 30-year-old cars. I enjoy older cars that I can tinker with.

I'm a portuguese young lad (25) that's moved out of country in pursuit of a better life mostly for political reasons. I find it symptomatic of the state of the country that someone like myself can work their ass off for 1 year or more (earning 800 euro) to buy a 20 year old car. Appalling.

@@thecryptostrategist2433 I can still vote abroad. I don't though because I no longer recognize the legitimacy of Portuguese democratic institutions. Either way doesn't make a difference - Portugal is a lost cause politically, the foxes are guarding the hen house if you catch what I'm putting down.

Pretty much the same price for a used car here in America. Three years ago I bought an 2006 Audi s4avant v8 had 113,000 miles on it and payed $12,000! Great used car wouldn’t trade it for a newer Audi avant!

In the Netherlands that small Opel Corsa on "gasoline" you can buy for maybe 500-700 euro's. Still those are nice cars, if they are well kept, repair/parts are cheap.

Those prices are very inflated, even for portuguese standards. Maybe it has to do with competition scarcity (countryside factor).

Wow €12,000 for a Peugeot 308. In England on e bay there is a lovely 2016 308 with 56.000 on the clock for £ 3,600. That’s insane I wonder why? Is it really hard or expensive to import cars in Portugal?
@theportugeeza

It's something to do with the first registration tax mixed with import duty... it's not economical to import so it creates a an artificial seller's market. Also, outside the major cities, public transport is dire, so you need a car!
@ricardoamendoeira3800
@ricardoamendoeira3800 2 ай бұрын
1. New cars are also more expensive than in most countries, so used cars don't get much competition from new cars and used prices can go higher 2. Used cars from a dealer have a 1 year warranty, which makes them less risky 3. Expensive to import foreign cars 4. The climate is very easy on cars, so used cars are usually in a better condition than ones in cold countries

If you are thinking about an older car with a larger engine, don't think about it. If you are thinking quite new (under a year, low mileage) and hybrid / electric, this can work very well from Germany. However, it will be a process. I have 2 friends that did it and saved over 10K euro each by doing so.

The prices are high compared to most other markets. Most of these vehicles need to be taken off the road. The problems I found when buying here were the following: 1) They love diesels here. I would never buy one. 2) They love manual transmissions. I hate them 3) Japanese cars are not popular. I would never touch anything else. 4) High mileage vehicles are the norm here. I would not buy anything with over 20,000 Km on the clock. 5) You find things like cloth seats and manual widows, even on newish models. I didn't know what to say about this. It is just bizarre. 6) French brands dominate and are regarded as being good. Anyone in touch with reality would know that French makes lose value like nothing else - and for good reason. In terms of bad choices, French brands are in the company of stuff like Jaguar for how much trouble they will bring you over time. 7) Engine sizes are small and there are not all that many choices with 2.0L or above. This matters because having an underpowered car in a place full of hills (Coimbra) is not fun. Finally, after looking at 2nd hand , I just went and bought new. I won't be here long, but if I needed another car and planned to stay, I would import from Germany and jump through the hoops. For electric cars, this is the way to go for sure. There are significant savings to be made.
