Wow, that was a suprise! You really wouldn’t have expected it to still work with a new ecodisc besides it and the unresponsive buttons. But there’s still some life left in that lift. It’s got a cosy interiour too. I have never see an Otis lift with blackbuttons in such a slim-line door frame design. I wonder how similair it is “under the hood” to the Flohr-Otis “Pira/Pilo” model lifts with swing doors from the late 60’s / early 70’s that where quite common in germany and the netherlands. Those lifts had some interresting door designs that are quite unique in their styling. Sadly there are not many of them around anymore and I’ve last been in one in 2004 when my grandfather was still alive in an elderly home.

Can't wait for part 2 ! For the drag race, on one side we have an old Otis lift and on the other, a brand new Kone. The Kone has "intelligent leveling", where the lift brakes smoothly in one clean shot to be perfectly lined up with the floor, and the Otis has "classic leveling", where the doors open during the leveling period, and both appear to go at the same speed. But the Otis might win for its instant start and early doors opening.

This Ots equipment was/is known as 'standard Housing' as it was installed in many blocks of flats, sometimes as a 'Skip Floor' installation each lift serving alternate floors one for odd floors and one for evens floors. Much of the equipment it was prefabricated aluminium alloy entrance and arrived on site pre assembled frames very basic.

@Ben-fr8gi10 ай бұрын
One thing I appreciate about these old lifts is they're fast. They never hang around, soon as you push a button the motor whirs up and it's on it's way, then when you're in the lift as soon as you push the button for your floor it's off. You can see how fast it went from floor 6 to zero in this video. I don't know why, but a lot of modern lifts seem to have a long pause between the button press and doing anything, and they're not usually so fast moving either
@mrmattandmrchay10 ай бұрын
yes, no waiting around. Doors close, completes a circuit, activates a relay and it's moving! Nowadays, software - doors close, software checks this, checks that, start increasing motor speed via the VFD drive, etc.

@user-juoig77992 жыл бұрын
This is a cool old lift. Unfortunately, it's bound to get either modernised, torn out, or permanently decommissioned. If I had to modify this lift, I'd do the first option, modernise. I would keep the old fixtures, but switch the really inefficient halogen and incandescent bulbs for much more efficient LEDs. Then, I'd repaint the lift's car so it doesn't look like it's falling apart anymore. I'd oil the tracks to eliminate the scary sounds and I would leave it at that, maybe replacing the doors.
@mrmattandmrchay2 жыл бұрын
I love the scary sounds, adds to the personality! :) The carpets on the walls is very 70s, but really, paint get scratched and needs touching up, but a carpet - wears for much longer!

I'll bet I know why you were scared of these. Up until 1974 many of these here in USA had removable side panels which opened to the shaft, they were made to be "rescue elevators" where they could use manual controls to get alongside a disabled car, extend a ramp (brought along from the office) and open the other side panels so basically stuck occupants could walk to the other car. The ramp had pop up rails and it worked usually however, many times people got hurt so it was fire department only for 2 years and then it was forbidden I'm not sure what happened but someone must have been killed. The empire state building elevators were designed this way too but after the bomber flew into it they made changes rendering car to car impossible. If you were a kid and saw into the shaft through the side or the window some of these had you'd be terrified. I was scared of freight elevators because I saw someone kidnapped from a sideways view, it was arms grabbing someone from where the elevator was, then screams as it went to a lower floor.. I thought freight elevators had monsters in them until age of 6... is it the shift view or the shift window view, even today looking into the Washington monument shift from the observation deck stairs still scares me and it's inside a cage..

7:39 They're expecting the passengers to be rather slim, 540 kg / 8 persons is only 67.5 kg per passenger. All elevators I've seen (mostly in Germany) assume an average passenger weight of 75 kg. Is that difference because of old vs. new or is it UK vs DE?
