What still stuns me is how Shanggu did not even look angry or pissed. Rather, all she displayed was disappointment. Choosing Wu Huan was one of the decisions she thought she made right before she even gained the wisdom and power of Chief God status. It's like a parent who's sad that her child ultimately betrayed them.

Her punishment is same as Lord Krishna gave to Ashwatthama in Mahabharat. In Mahabharat Pandav (good) were fighting against Kaurava ( evil). Fight lasted for 18 days and all Kaurava were killed . Ashwatthama was on Kaurava side. Seeing all his friends died Ashwatthama decided to use ultimate weapon . He used that weapon on Unborn baby who was heir to Pandavas lineage. And thus Lord Krishna saved that child. It was very cruel to use weapon against unborn baby and so Lord Krishna cursed him that he he will not be human nor be animal, he will inherit all the deasease, he will live forever, his body will be pain everytime but still can't be cured . No one will befriend him. He will live lonely life. Here Shanggu also cursed Wu Han same.

In multiple cultures immortality is conditional. For both Chinese and Norse Immortals to maintain immortality a special food has to be eaten every so many centuries. Sacred Peaches for the Chinese Immortals and the Apples of Iduun for the Norse. Without it, they become mortal again. Greeks also had Ambrosia, if a mortal consumes it, they can become a god. One of the most famous Chinese stories, Journey to the West, features a character (Son Goku) who gained immortality by stealing the sacred peaches and disrupted the banquet and thus was punished by being sealed under a mountain until a monk freed him.

I think she’s beautiful but I also think she’s not supposed to look like a “goddess”. They had a strong, handsome, and powerful god is chaos and look what happened. Shanggu is relatively weak and un imposing. A god only in name. But she was the one who wasn’t too proud to die for the “commoner” because she could sympathize with them.
