At the foot of the Himalayas, Rishikesh, close to the sources of the Ganges, is sacred both by its Hindu pilgrims and by its ashrams dedicated to yoga and meditation.
In early March, Rishikesh hosts the Yoga Festival, where many schools teach their courses to Indians but also to a population of international followers.
The Patanjala Yoga Center school, led by Usha Devi, was fully booked by offering its followers the Iyengar method. Famous author of a best seller on the subject in 1966, Shri Guruji BKS Iyengar, after studying 200 asanas and 14 types of pranayama, synthesized and classified them by increasing difficulty.
This technique, very popular today, focuses on body alignment, organizes postures in sequences and uses accessories such as straps or chairs.
Made famous in 1968 by the Beatles who came to study meditation with the Yogi Maharishi Mahesh, Rishikesh is today a high place for the practice of Yoga in India. Crossed by the Ganges, the city is surrounded by all the deities, in charge of helping humans in their quest for meaning and spirituality.
