I bought a FLIR thermal camera so I could have a look at any unknown 'heat drains' in my house to save more on energy bills etc. Yeah I know, really interesting!

I would also suggest going outside and use the camera to look back at the house. Best to do this when there's a good temperature variance between indoors and outdoors. I have my own infra red camera and it's surprising how often you can use it over the course of a year. You can also use it to see any hotspots on your solar panels.

Great video as usual! As it happens my son has a cheap self-contained £110 Ali Express self-contained thermal camera which he brought with him when he visited before Christmas. It saved me £500-£600 straight off the bat because I had just got quotes for a Power Flush but the Thermal Camera showed that all the radiators were heating evenly and no cold spots. Also showed where there had been a window in the lounge I never knew had been there and the buried lintel was a cold spot as was the loft hatch. I also could confirm that the 300mm of Rockwall loft insulation was doing its job and had been pushed into all the difficult to reach places but the loft hatch showed up as DEEP BLUE and in need of attention. We also went outside and inspected the performance of the windows and wall insulation and all was good apart for one hot spot 10 C hotter than any other point on the house. It coincided with where central heating pipes at the other side were buried in the floor typical on a 1970's build. Well worth any family investing in a thermal camera I would say and sharing the cost.

I have just bought a FLIR one too, took my first set of photos yesterday and need to go through in a bit more detail. Found a similar issue to you below the kitchen cupboards. Realised that the bottom third of some of our walls are colder where they go in to cellar, which seems obvious but I hadn't realised before (our house is split level). Confirmed a few other things I suspected were cold spots that will be harder to deal with but also confirmed that a couple of improvements I made in the past are working! I'm hoping it will eventually pay for itself with us, as our house is big, draughty and we'll be here a long time... we'll see. I also have an extractor fan that I thought was completely dead... but the FLIR has shown me it is producing heat! So some investigation is warranted there. A word of warning to others...FLIR seem to be having trouble with compatibility with certain phones, which their website does not indicate at all. I have a Google Pixel on Android 13 and the FLIR does not work with it, but fortunately there is an older version of the FLIR app that works with my old Sony phone on Android 9. I also tested the camera successfully with the latest app on my friend's Samsung with Android 12. FLIR have told me an app update will be released to make it work with Pixel phones, but I'm not holding my breath. Go in eyes-open because these things are not cheap.

About 11 years ago my son purchased a Flir camera for use at work. One of the first savings was when he discovered a very hot spot in the mains cabling in the warehouse where he worked. When we used the camera on our home we discovered that the building was full of heat escape routes, in spite of having 'professional ' installed insulation. We ended up knocking the old house down and built anew. The new house is built like a tea-cosy, and when we use the camera now it is hard to find any leaks! Plus we have a brand new house, for the six of us.

Cold spots on upstairs ceilings will also attract damp and mould. As moisture will migrate to the upper floors and then find the cold surfaces to condense on. I've just fixed my insulation and had to repaint because of this.

@gonzo_the_great1675

@@j0404t Your upper floors should be airtight from air (moist or not) from getting into the roof space. Otherwise you are losing heat that way. So there should not be getting moisture in the loft to condense on surfaces. Inside the house you get moisture from people, cooking, fish tanks, drying clothes on radiators etc.

I bought one, think it's worth it. I did find one heat leak that I can fix, but mostly I found places where heat is being lost, but retrofit would be complicated and expensive. CEX had some refurbished units for sale, about £240 I believe for the higher resolution Android model. I have found that all the draught sealing I have done is really paying off but my front and back doors are a bit leaky and my cavity insulation is not very even. I also have sections at the top of my bedrooms that have a 45 degree slope (30's council house, it was cheaper to build with three courses of brick missing) and this slope is not at all insulated. I'm going to try to pour some polystyrene packing peanuts in. I will probably lend my camera to my neighbours, also.

I looked at renting a thermal camera, it's not as good as what you've shown (lesser resolution) but was £70 a day, plus a £30 deposit and £20 insured postage to return so never bothered. In the meantime I've done the poorman's version of this. Wait for a really windy day and go around each window/door/socket with an incense stick to check for airtightness. It won't help for level of insulation of course but its the best I could do For £3 vs £120!

They should have a rental scheme like "Love Film" where you can borrow one for £10 for a week off the council... £200-1000 is too much for the average Joe to check this. In my house I've got a wood burner. But even in winter its only on maybe 3-5% of the time as like now it's 10C outside, so I don't bother. Luckily the wood burner is set back from the wall in it's own recess. So I got a piece of ply 2cm smaller than the opening. Fitted 2x4's around it to make a box. Found a sheet of celotex in a skip and cut it so tight to fit the box it doesn't need anything to holid it in place. Then I staple gunned scrap carpet to the 2x4's around the edge. Now when I'm not using the stove I have a super-snug plug that fills the gap which I can kick in place with my foot! Otherwise the stove is a freezing, draughty 5 inch diamater larder cupboard in what should be the warmest room of the house!!! Oh, and to the front I fitted 2x 5 inch screws to the wood frame as hooks to pull out the ply when i want to use the stove. You can see a video of this in my own channel.

I'd get one but fear i would be absolutely horrified by the amount of heat lost in my drafty edwardian terrace, with open fireplace and stupidly high ceilings. The moronic residents association won't let us change our windows at the front into double glazing and we can't put solar on the street-facing side of the roof as it would "spoil the look of the area" I'd love to move into a more modern property with proper insulation

Magnetic secondary glazing (MagnaGlaze, etc) is invisible from the outside and easy to DIY. That and chimney balloons would solve your biggest problems pretty cheaply. After that it's internal insulation whenever you redecorate a room. Solar is fun, but insulation will save you more money and make you more comfortable.

The quality and frame rate is really bad on those FLIR... :( for just 240$ you get a TOPDON tc001 with 25Hz and a bigger sensor (256x160) ...

I’d certainly hire one for a couple of days, but wouldn’t buy one
