In this episode of "From Vise to Water," I discuss the nail knot used when connecting both leaders and backing to a fly line. Prior to demonstrating the technique, there is a brief discussion of alternatives to the nail knot, and then later in the video, I share some tips to using this knot (plus instances in which I keep fly line loop connections intact).
Thanks for viewing this KZfaq fly tying tutorial, and I encourage you to view my additional videos at the following website: www.troutandfeather.com

By leaving the loop at the end of the fly line..you can attach your leader by making a loop at the end of it and attaching both line with a loop to loop connection. You can then have many leaders with flies and easily change to any fly to choose without cutting meager and fly lines. My pre flied leaders are spooled on a spongy tube..

@@TimCammisa Wouldn't this mono butt section also eliminate the continuous cutting back of the fly line each time you change leaders? IDK, perhaps that cutback amount in fly line is insignificant. Or perhaps a 2.5 - 3.0mm tippet ring at the end of the mono butt section and tie each new leader on from there. I suppose the possibilities become endless. Love the tool. Use it to make leaders as well. Love your videos as well!

hey tim,,,,if u never tried this way its worth a try,,,,ive used it for 15 yrs now..i cant stand any loop connection as they all hinge while casting..i also cut the loop end of the fly line off then i nail knot a piece of 35lb brown maxima roughly 15 or so inches long,,,i then cut the loop off of the new leader im going to use and simply attach those 2 ends with a simple 3 turn blood knot..you now have a direct connection which turns over better than any loop connection..it takes an awful lot of changing leaders to chop away at that 15in butt section until you need to replace it..

spot on @termite122 That is one of the main reasons I don't like the loop connections of flyline to leader. They hinge when casting. Nail knots, the flyline & leader stay solid during the turn over when casting. Much better leader turnover & less drag on the river I believe, without the loop connections.
@geraldlrstubbs
@geraldlrstubbs 4 жыл бұрын
You mentioned using a really slick connection at one time. If you are worried about the join between the line and leader being slick then take more time over it and use a needle knot. Do that tidily and that is about as slick as you can get because the leader is not coming off the side of the line but through the middle.

Hi Tim great video, I always use a nail not on the backing connection but have only tried this method on the leader connection after my welded loop has become damaged. I have found that with the nail not on the leader after fishing for a few hours water seams to get under the fly line coating and travel up the line and sink the tip of my line. This is not a big problem when nymph or streamer fishing but troublesome when fishing dries. Does the uv covering stop this or have you also have this problem. Also I like the tie-fast tool, it has a few other uses of the nail knot in the directions but I have not used them yet. These tools are a great improvement over the simple nails that I have found is so many of my fathers and uncles fishing bags that I have inherited, but I have used the old nail in a pinch once or twice in some Maine fishing cabins lol.
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 7 жыл бұрын
First of all, I love that they had nails in the bag for the knot, Andrew; so cool! I have not had the problem of the tip sinking, though I am unsure if it's just the UV coating helping. The key to the UV is making it insignificant enough to not cause the tip section to weigh more, causing sinking. Will the glue prevent any water from seeping inside? Absolutely, but I tend to clean my lines regularly and apply a floatant to them (and the top portion of the leader), thus that may be helping things. Also, as you know, not all lines are created the same, and I've had some over the years that simply didn't float well. Thanks for taking the time to share, and I hope all is well. Tim

Really nice tutorial Tim. I prefer nail knot for butt section of leader to fly line rather than welded loop. Slips though guides more smoothly as you mention. I create a perfection loop in the butt section in the leader. If you do not create a loop in leader butt section, how are you managing change. For example, are you using a blood knot when the time comes to change leader rather than loop to loop? Thanks
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments and kind words, Larry, and we're on the same page there. For leaders, I typically will be tying on a new nail knot (or a blood knot to the connection further down the butt section). The majority of fly lines have ample room to make additional nail knots, and the nymphing lines I've been using are level, thus easier yet. If you are asking how I'm changing the tippet, I tend to use micro tippet rings, thus am not losing any of the base leader during changes. I hope that helps! Tim www.troutandfeather.com

I understand why you want that loop out of there. I do the same thing for the simple reason that’s not my knot. Years ago I wanted to learn the blood knot and I had gotten a new rod and reel, at that time I knew nothing about the nail knot, I thought the preferred method was a blood knot so I went down to the local fly shop, I’ve known the owner for years but he wasn’t there but there was another guy there and he was about 75 and been a guide for years so I thought he will know how to attach all of my knew lines so I told him I just needed my backing attached to my fly line and it seemed he was kinda lost but got it done w a huge loop knot then I asked okay well here is where I was wanting the blood knot, he said o no we have a better way and grabbed these loop things that he put on the fly line and took a lighter which blew my mind and tightened the thing up like those Chinese finger lock things then it had a loop on it, I said what the hell is that? So I have to spend another $8 here for those things when I was just wanting to learn the blood knot. I got home and cut that loop system off and learned the nail knot with no tool and went on my way. I expected a lot more from an old guy that’s been guiding people down the rogue river for a 100 years. I can’t trust a machines knot or who ever tied it and as far as I’m concerned their knots might be stronger but I don’t care. Good Fishin to ya.

While I agree that it's much prettier, the tying tool itself is still a copy of the ORIGINAL Tie Fast Tool. Just like all most all other knot tying tools that are similar. I mean that really doesn't matter I guess. Both work the same, one is much cheaper, not as pretty but extremely durable.

Hi Lucky and thanks for taking a moment to comment. Super glue is a great adhesive when ensuring strength, but when it comes to the nail knot, it's a really strong knot. Instead, the addition of UV glue ensures a smooth transition as the knot goes through the guides. It's great to know you've never had your knot catch in your guides over those decades, but this is recommended for others to ensure they don't have that issue. Thanks! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
