Using A SCREWDRIVER To Test For ROD KNOCK On The $1,500 Hyundai Veloster

Do you have a long screwdriver? That and a ratchet are the only tools you need to test an engine for rod knock or failure once the plugs are out. In the last 2012 Hyundai Veloster video it seemed like we might just get away with fixing a faulty timing chain tensioner on the 1.6L Gamma engine. About half the comments agreed that it's likely timing and it was a relatively common failure. The other half promised it was rod knock so I wanted to go back and check. Today we decide the cheap Veloster's future, pull the entire side of the engine off, or just swap the entire engine.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Fury, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make KZfaq videos and work in enterprise data storage.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?
Instagram: WatchJRGo
Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)
Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

What a cool and super-easy engine test! If you wouldn't mind, once you get the old engine out, could you please open it up so that we can see exactly what happened inside the engine to cause this issue, I think that would be very interesting to see exactly what caused the engine failure and the resulting damage from it.

@@theadvocate4698 I agree totally! Not too many of us are actually able to tear an engine down so we don't get the opportunity to see what causes common engine-failures like this. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable breaking down an engine but it seems that JR can practically do this kind-of thing in his sleep and I know seeing the inside causes and results of a problem like this from the inside of the engine would be very fascinating and also help us to learn more about breaking an engine down and maybe even preventing this issue to begin with to boot.

And when taking off in first its not a manual , the first gear only jerks a bit to start and tou have to gradually touch the gas if you don't want to feel that rev without rhe feel of speed until the second gear kicks in and smoothly shifts into all of the gears. So the knock up front and first gear is only concearn....hope you get a chance to read this and understand my problem....you guys are GREAT AND EDUCATIONAL FOR ME AND MY DAUGHTER .

Figured piston slap, or wrist pin, or rod. That engine just known for that unfortunately. I had to swap a couple over at the shop I worked at due to same issue and noise and was piston slap on two cylinders and the other bad wrist pin and rod, took piston out and was loosey-goosey. Did same trick pretty much just tap the top of the piston and turn over motor. I got lucky and found a good motor with only 5k miles on it for about $500 at local junk yard.

Jr, a better way to test or to confirm is to just disconnect injectors one by one. If knocking stops when you disconnect the injector, then that's very likely the cylinder with bad bearings. The screw driver method isn't always reliable. I had a car pass "screw driver test" but it was still knocking.

I love in Canada Gatineau Quebec. Alot of the Hyundai Cars did this but there was a recall on the call. Something about they make it to big then begins to knock. It was a huge fail on there end. So when I needed a rental car from Hyundai they had none for almost a year as they were changing engines every day for recalls. Only thing I find shitty is they decide if it should be a recAll or not.

I’m imagining that he’ll have to return it as core and when I worked for a big box auto parts store we couldn’t take obliterated cores for return. It needed to be rebuildable.

How involved is replacing the entire engine in the veloster. I've got a 2013 that's got a similar problem, so likely engine replacement is more cost effective.
