Test lights are incredibly versatile and powerful tools! I just had a very similar situation on a 13 Ford F250 window switch yesterday. The shop had been tinkering with it for a couple hours when I walked in to look at a different vehicle, and before they could even finish telling me what had happened, I had verified circuit type and integrity, and was upside-down under the dash locating a blown fuse for the front window motor relay control circuit. The things you teach are so absolutely critical, and I can confirm that all this knowlege continues to carry through with vehicles manfuctured in 2024, and becomes more and more important every day as control circuits become more and more complex. Honestly Paul, as soon as I have my house paid off, I really should start sending you a significant portion of my paychecks, or donate that portion to a charity of your choosing. I owe you a lot, and I appreciate you more than you'll ever know!

As Erick O would say when reaching for his test light… “ let me grab the ol scope on a rope “ lol. Honestly once you understand the capabilities of a test light that’s not the LED with display junk they try to peddle that all new techs get conned into buying when they step onto a tool truck I’m guilty of this too, and get a incandescent 200 ish ma test light you can literally diagnose and verify potential repair with nothing but a 30$ scratch awl with a cord hanging off of it lol

The term "pull down circuit" always threw me off like it's something special or different than a normal circuit. But all it really means is that we are on the GROUND side of the load; and the only reason why it shows voltage is because the ground is disconnected. But when you apply the ground (which is what the switch does)--- it pulls the circuit down to it's natural state in the closed circuit which is: a ground. This used to be so mystifying to me and hard to grasp; but once you get it, it's actually very simple. The key thing to repeat over and over-- that most people will not understand at first, because it's counter intuitive is: That the "GROUND" side of a load will show voltage when it's disconnected. That's one thing that throws people off; because it's the ground side of the motor-- why would it have a voltage? But it does. That's the one missing piece that keeps people from understanding this type of setup. I took 2 years of electronics in Vo-tech and I still never knew this until I seen you explain it on a white board. and I'm a certified general electronics technician. :) I just hadn't ever been taught that simple understanding, weirdly enough. We always studied closed circuits and how they work. Not how to trouble shoot them when they are open or broken.

HI Paul. Good to see someone post a video on test lights. I myself run my own workshop in Australia and specialise in electrical diagnostic and repairs. You knew there had to be someone pipe up and say how bad test lights are and that you shouldn't use them. These people clearly don't understand a series curcuit and the effect of the resistance of the bulb can be a very usful tool. Test lights have multiple uses if you know how to use one and understand the system your working on. There is no need to go to the scope or scan tool for every fault and people often skip the basics.

Hey Paul this is quite a coincidence that you put this video up because I was working on my problematic driver side window switch the other day. I disconnected the window switch module and jumpered the wiring to the window motor in order to roll the window up for the night but when I reconnected the module, the driver side window switch worked fine so I think it was just bad contact with one of the two wiring conectors that plug into the module switch . I have loved wiring diagrams ever since I was a kid so I bought and studied every service manual(s) to every vehicle I've owned.

Basically the same thing is done when checking which wires run the locks when doing pre checks on wire colours when installing a remote start. Low current test light and just supplying a safe ground through an incandescent test light. Also works when checking a low ref circuit from a pcm/ecm that’s suspected to have failed internally in the module. Hook to a ground back probe module connector or your preferred method of circuit checking ( since technically piercing a hole in the weather pack seal is considered just as bad as wire piercing )

@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 ай бұрын
@@12brmien that is completely opposite of how I teach it. I've never taught it from the internals of the module. I understand a "pull-up" resistor is used on what I'd call a pull-down circuit, but I don't care, what does the switch do? It pulls it down! What do we see as technicians? The switch, and what it is connected to! (a ground). If I'm going to use my test light and do what the switch does, I need to think about what the switch is doing! It's pulling it to ground. So what polarity does my test light go to? Ground! To teach this as a pull-up circuit, just adds unnecessary confusion. I realize others take issue with me on this, but I don't care. So I tell my students that a pull down circuit is internally sourced by the computer and the switch pulls it to ground. Switch open, voltage is high, switch closed, voltage is low. It makes WAY more sense when taught this way.
@danieljurgill1681
@danieljurgill1681 5 ай бұрын
@@ScannerDanner teaching it this way might help your students understand what happens, but it is not correct when looking at computer logic and pull up and pull down resistors. The confusion is on what UP means. Up means the high voltage out of 2 possible outcomes, Down means the low voltage. It is a HIGH state or a LOW state, Not floating. On a MAF circuit there is a pull up resistor internal to ECM. It is only called UP because of the HIGH state the voltage is after the resistor , if the circuit to the MAF were disconnected. I would stay away from the term PULL up or DOWN, because of the confusion, and stick with the voltage drop explanation. A search on Pull up and Pull down circuit design is well established. Your other videos on the multimeter testing basics and the water hose analogy make the most sense.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 ай бұрын
@@danieljurgill1681 what does the switch do in this case? It switches to ground, it literally pulls the voltage down. To teach that this is a pull-up circuit because it has a pull-up resistor inside of the computer is counter productive. My understanding of the circuit, what it does, how to test it, where the voltage is coming from, is not affected by the term I choose to call it and teach it.

Couldn't that bypass test work on trouble shooting a fuel pump? Ground your test light to the power side of the a inertia switch then probe the ground side of the switch. With the KOEO if the test light comes on that would say that everything else is working upstream. So now that makes the switch Or fuel pump bad right? If they both check out good then we're looking at a no spark situation which can be trouble shot using that same technic on the ignition system? Is that right? If so that is frickin genius dude.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 ай бұрын
There are variables to your question. A fuel pump inertia switch can be on the control side or load side of a fuel pump relay. But in either case, it is a current carrying switch, NOT a switch input that carries microamps like im showing in this video. Also for an intertia switch, regardless of location, if you were to use a test light, that would limit current flow through the circuit. So it wouldn't work at all on the load side of the pump circuit, and may or may not work on the control side of a relay. Use a jumper wire if you want to bypass an inertia switch and just jump the two terminals together. Hope that helps.

Not a big fan of this lesson. I don’t ever use test lights, I just don’t have enough room in my box for useless tools. So you could have explained hey if it didn’t work (with your test light) then your gonna have to go upstream for a wiring or ECM issue*. NOT, well you think it’s the switch so you used your test light on it and the wiring is good so get a new switch. Missed some key points before claiming that. So close to the ground and even showed the milivolts. But grind that lessen in their heads, if this was showing 11 volts on the ground pin with the switch closed and the lock still doesn’t work, guess what? Bad ground. Or how about you have 0.0 volts on ground at that point. Well the wiring is good, using a jumper wire to ground instead of a useless test light. Why doesn’t it work. What’s our next step? Unplug the connector and perform a Terminal drag test. Unsure what terminal to use, unpin the circuit from the connector and feel it on the component. Is that ground terminal all spread out and neither lock or unlock works? This would have been a much better lessen to techs to reality, switch was replaced and still don’t work. Well, terminals are all spread out from previous tech using incorrect terminals, happens a lot. And the ground was open the whole time. I give this video 1 out of 10. I understand you may have been in class and had some great context before and after. But without that, it’s pretty misleading to use in a real world application. * Also this video doesn’t show where you grounded your test light. Hopefully at the battery. And not on the possibly corroded cab skin ground, that may be the source of your issue and using this “hack” pulled you to finding the “open circuit” in that red wire with purple stripe. To then install a ECM that still didn’t fix it. To eventually find a bad ground, that you tell the customer caused his ecm to fail. Then the poor tech that watched this video goes "man that scanner danner sure does know electricity. i wish i could be as good as him but its just too darn hard. ill take better notes off youtube videos next time".
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 ай бұрын
Give me a break. I give you a 1 out of 10 for not knowing how valuable a test light is. What if you're using the jumper wire you said you'd use and you accidently ground the wrong pin? Also, you need some type of pin or point on the end of your jumper wire to contact the back of the terminal, so you'd make a jumper wire with a pin on the end of it right? Or just grab an incandescent test light 😂. Also direct battery ground is not necessary to use for this test on a circuit that carries microamps of current. Of course we make sure our ground is good but battery ground is not necessary here. This is a portion of a class and im focused on the bypass test itself. Also i showed the working switch AND the ground voltage. This wasn't a lesson on all the other variables, just the bypass test. You make a lot of assumptions about a 6 minute lesson on a bypass test.
@dtnamastertech1911
@dtnamastertech1911 5 ай бұрын
@@ScannerDanner Good morning. I could have come off a lot less harsh. But, I stand my ground. lol, no pun intended. Accidentally ground the wrong pin… I just don’t understand that logic. What if I accidentally short the positive battery terminal to ground? What do you think is going to happen. I work on Freightliners, internationals, Peterbilt’s. They all have circuit numbers, SAE numbers on their wires, connector views can be easily attained, cavity numbers are on about 70% of the connectors I’ve worked on. Not to mention the color of the wire. There’s many failsafes to assure you don’t “accidentally” short the wrong terminal. Which is why I use terminal leads. Once plugged into the correct terminal, wiggling the wire on the other side reveals your in the correct hole as the terminal then wiggles too. I have a collection and the wire end is stripped off a 1/4” to apply a load or short other terminals to it. About 1” in a hole poke for my meter. The terminal goes into the signal wire and gets left there. Meter lead still attached. Other lead of the meter is attached to battery ground, can’t believe you have this much attention and can say use the cab skin for ground. Get another terminal and plug it into the ground and jump it to the other terminal. Now if the circuit is working correctly, reading milivolts. If the ground is open or corroded your reading closer to signal voltage. I’m guilty of not always using cab skin ground, I have a proven rock solid electrical background and understand if I’m using cab skin my readings could be off, but I’ll never shy anyone away from using battery ground. Wait wait wait, your telling me if you have 12 volts on your cab skin from a bad ground and you short your test light between it and your 11 volt signal, it will still work because Microamps of current. Well don’t you just turn water into wine with your magic test light. Because that isn’t working in real life. Battery ground. I could teach you a thing or two about closed circuit live voltage testing. It’s way better than shorting terminals with a test light or jumper wire. Most of my connectors are sealed so a bulky test light isn’t going to work. I was using MIG wire hammered down and ground small to sneak between the seal and connector, preventing seal damage. Not a fan of back probing sealed connectors but sometimes it’s required. As a trainer I bought a bag of terminal back probes and hammered and ground those down. I like that they are super bright yellow. MIG wire is still an excellent bag of tricks though. I have several oxy acetylene welded to 1/4 bolt heads for custom picks and back probes. You shouldn’t post videos like this out of context. It’s not helpful for young techs trying to understand electrical. I do have a test light buried away somewhere in my toolbox. It’s there in case I need a 1/4 amp load. Which I haven’t needed in years. I trust my multimeter because I know what I’m expecting out of it. Seen way too many techs get burned by a test light. It just boggles my mind someone with a huge fan boy following, probably makes a decent chunk of change from KZfaq and puts a video like this out.

But your to stuck on your own ways to listen. So you do you and I'll do me. Also as smart as you are, you'd think you could listen a little better. In your first comment you are chastising me about the ground circuit. Watch this clip again, I mentioned the ground on two different occasions with the first time it begin shown with a voltmeter, with the circuit loaded! (Switch closed). @ 2:06 of the video and at 2:30 "we will cover more of that later" 🙄 And then the second time, when I showed the bypass test, it was mentioned again @ 4:03 Should we also include open and short circuit testing of the signal wire, and what an open ground actually looks like? How about what a shorted switch looks like and of course what a bad meter ground looks like? Guess what happens if my test light has a bad ground in this test? Nothing! The bypass test fails! IS that covered here? NO! I do all of that, just not here in this 6 minute video on Performing A By-pass Test! There was absolutely nothing out of context here and this clip still stands on it's own with no misinformation. So please do me a favor and take your know it all attitude elsewhere.

That wasn’t my intention. Just trying to point out helpful real life experiences. I’ve got 19 years under my belt, the last 9 have been with daimler trucks and kicking ass at electrical. Computer navigation and getting resources is a huge factor. To be able to say Ah well that FET opens at 6.7 amps and you’re pulling 7 amps, no wonder you have intermittent box lamps. But that’s a moving target as they gotta change their sites. Honestly I do appreciate the value of a low 1/4 amp load to apply to a pull down circuit. It is safer and a cool trick. I wouldn’t do it though. I’m a different breed. The industry is full of techs that claim they know better or are the best without backing anything up or teaching anyone anything.
