Amazing video. VOR navigation is one of those topics that seem so overwhelming at first, and one day to another, it just clicks.

John, which "affordable" ADS-B do you recommend and why? I understand that Stratus 3 allows one to use their cellular wi-fi, which is a great feature. Also, its best to have ADS-B IN and OUT? If you have already made a video covering this, please share link. Look forward to your reply. Happy/Safe Flying!

Hi thank you for this video. I have question why did you put the radial on top ,and you flying to the VOR why you did not put it done or only with interception we need to do that please correct me and explain.

My question is, will the AP then fly you direct TO the VOR once Id'd and tuned in for Nav 1 or Nav 2 (VOR), if you select those sources on the AP and make sure your CDI is set to the proper Nav source?

That's how I 'cheated' on my 3 leg cross country solo flight prior to getting my SEL private pilot's license I plotted VR routes to point B, point C, and back to point A on my sectionals, noting landmarks along the routes for corroboration of 'dead reckoning.'

I am a pilot and you did a great job but the video was to show how you fly with a VOR. This was suppose to be for a novice and you explained it way too fast for those who wish to know the working of a VOR. The video was really about making sure your VOR is working properly. But a great video for an experienced pilot.

Thanks for the video. Can anyone tell me why G5s don't show DME in the VOR/LOC mode but do when in GPS mode?
@kombolasha
@kombolasha Жыл бұрын
Because it’s not a dedicated DME receiver, meaning it’s not receiving a UHF frequency; it can only determine distance based on triangulating GPS signals, so it only works in that mode.

What if you’re not flying to a station though? How do you use vor to fly cross country?
@kombolasha
@kombolasha Жыл бұрын
You have to either hop from one VOR to the next; or use 2 VORs, see which radial makes each one center up, and determine your location that way.
@YuraKostiukevych
@YuraKostiukevych 3 жыл бұрын
Why does VOR 2 show “to” on 082 radial? You’re flying 262 course, so I’d expect vor 2 indicate “from” for 082.
@kombolasha
@kombolasha Жыл бұрын
Flying away FROM the station on the 262 radial, because all the radials emanate FROM the hub (the VOR). Flying TO the station, is the same as flying from the station on the reciprocal radial.

What did I miss? If the airborne check is +/- 6 degrees why wouldn't the 4.5 degree difference pass?
@williammayne2581
@williammayne2581 5 жыл бұрын
Explained quickly at the end of the video. Key word is “dual”, 4 degrees between each CDI regardless of whether you’re on the ground or airborne when comparing 2 CDIs.
@flywithwilliam2113
@flywithwilliam2113 5 жыл бұрын
Dual VOR check between two different VORs receivers should be within 4 degrees. This is regardless of airborne or on the ground, as you're trying to match the CDI between the two VORs in the plane. The +/- 6 degree tolerance for an airborne check only applies for an airborne checkpoint. In this case, you can test each VOR separately, and each VOR has to be within +/- 6 degrees. The difference is you're not checking the VORs against each other in this case.
@GreenGuyDIY
@GreenGuyDIY 5 жыл бұрын
FAR Sec. 91.171 4(c) does not indicate while on the ground or airborn. It simply states, " If dual system VOR (units independent of each other except for the antenna) is installed in the aircraft, the person checking the equipment may check one system against the other in place of the check procedures specified in paragraph (b) of this section. Both systems shall be tuned to the same VOR ground facility and note the indicated bearings to that station. The maximum permissible variation between the two indicated bearings is 4 degrees."
