I wanted to develop a game where the mobs shared the mechanics of the player allowing for this. However, this idea is dumb AF and should never be implemented. Still going to do it because YOLO

@@UNKNOWN_W0LF not really. The reason to do it is that all of the actors (players, mobs, and NPCs) can share the same systems. The reason it isn't done is that game controlled actors cheat, like, a lot. The other reason is that mobs and NPCs have mechanics that players will not have access and for good reason for balancing. Creating game systems where everything is balanced for everything would be more difficult and opens for interested parties to take advantage of the shared systems. Creating a game involves a lot of optimizations and that means you don't want to share systems where shortcuts could be employed for game controlled actors. The main reason I wanted to do it anyway, is to populate the world and make it feel less empty. By having PC players, you would be able to ensure the world is populated with "players" that human players would be able to interact with. Either right, trade, and raid with. At least keep the game lively if there aren't enough human players on at any given time. Not that that is realistic but machine learning and modeling has come a long way. Building a good enough model to play the game would be potentially crazy expensive for the compute cycles and crazy time consuming to build the network and train it. You would essentially want to create a new network for each activity and then build a network above that for which activity to do at any one time. Compared to all that, it is much easier and faster to do a lot of conditionals and randomizer to make things interesting. Won't be anywhere close to "human" but most AI in game engines is really good. Also, you only need to look at Skyrim to know how well AI systems work. They can be super interesting but that isn't always a good thing. It is much better to develop the game controlled actors and entities separately from player controlled. Different mechanics, different optimizations, and different controls. Makes for much saner programming and programmers. Still with decent enough abstractions, it should be possible to share while having two separate systems. Even if it isn't the beautiful (albeit insane) world of network APIs to do so.

You forget the further tragedy! The NPC, though only programmed to say their lines as they are required, knows about this unique and precious world he lives in. And even though he knows he's going to be reset, the man who did so much for them all asked him to remember him. And he tells him, knowing it's futile: "I'll try"

"I'll try," is even more tragic, because on hardcore, that save file dies with the adventurer. So it's the end, even for NPCs.

What do you mean? You can still fight back as the NPC is talking. And besides, talking to NPCs while you have an enemy isn't something anyone does because that runs fhe risk of the enemy killing the NPC.

Better hope you quicksaved.... Or just run into the tower outside Whiterun and keep giant trapped outside door and use arrows or flames, frostbite or sparks to take it out. Lol 😂
