She is a better version of Daenerys Targaryen. Daenerys in beginning of book one is... a terrible fighter. Dragons change. Dragons grow up. Dragons find their destinies. Dragons can learn to fight. This is how Sunny's character arc should have developed. Reluctantly she takes over the world, discovering more and more amazing abilities which she has because of her antecedents.

All that is missing is that that the lack of barbed tail resulted in the breath weapons of her animus father and Sandwing mother to merge into something that takes a few years to develop, but then becomes the most lethal breath weapon on Pyrrhia, and, voila, you have this Sunny. It actually makes sense that Sunny won. Sunny is the dragon of destiny, for what it's worth. She will make the dreams of Darkstalker true, she makes the prophecy of Morrowseer true. It was not Quibli who made Thorn queen. It was Sunny. She did it so she could inherit the throne. Quibli was a good dragon, but he was a dragon of Sunny's mom. If Sunny is to become the Empress of Pyrrhia, Quibli had to go, and go he did. Quibli forfeited his one chance to outdo somebody quite as cunning, dangerous and predestined to greatness as Sunny when the original Darkstalker gave him the offer. And now he had to pay.
