Do you find you end up with any fungus? Or it’s generally pretty low?
@tjkemp29592 жыл бұрын
I haven’t had any thus far. I am three weeks into my tomato’s and pepper seedlings and they have germinated very well. I do find this mixture hold water well.

The choir I've used (just some cheap brick I found online) was much finer than this and did not contain any of those long fibers. I don't have a lot experience with seed sowing in it, but I really like that it doesn't get as hydrophobic as peat. Even the finer choir is much faster draining than the peat, so not adding anything for drainage probably still makes sense.
@GardeningInCanada2 жыл бұрын
That makes sense! Mine was really chunky and the first batch I got was equally as chunky too 😅

I love the compressed bricks that we get here in the Philippines. The ones I get has a mix of peat ( fine coco ) and coir ( stringy fiber ). I still add perlite and/or rice hulls and compost (because I love living dangerously) on my starters, my plants love it and they grow pretty healthy roots
@GardeningInCanada2 жыл бұрын

I just tried germinting seeds in pure coconut peat (fine particles + fiber) last month in Singapore. The seeds did germinate quickly but didn't grow well after that, because the peat seem to have compacted a lot which inhibited root growth. I'm not really sure as I'm very new to gardening. Now I'm trying mixing it with compost, rice husks and sand, given it rains frequently here, hope I can get better result this time.

Does using hot or boiling water kill beneficial bacteria etc? Are you doing this just to kill fungus gnat eggs? Thanks.
@GardeningInCanada2 жыл бұрын
It takes out everything. And I am using it to remove bacteria mostly. The nematodes are what I am using for the gnats.
@darylpreston75052 жыл бұрын
@@GardeningInCanada Yes that's what I thought. Haven't graduated to nematodes yet. Are these commercially available?

I had been seed starting in potting soil for a few years, mainly because I had left overs from the year before. I never had a problem starting seeds. I would go through it and take out the big pieces (sticks, etc) and crumble any clumps. Last year, after looking at multiple gardening channels, I splurged and bought a bag of Burpee seed starting mix. It wasCoir based, and infested with fungus gnats. Never again, I will use whatever potting soil I have left from last year.
@GardeningInCanada2 жыл бұрын
Thats really common. I’m assuming they leave it in some sort of a warehouse so a while before bagging it.
@j.b.68552 жыл бұрын
@@GardeningInCanada It was the worst experience I have had yet. A few got out of the bag when I opened it and they were a nuisance. I went to the dollar store and bought a large cheap plastic container with a lid. I used the microwave to sterilize the stuff.

I've used coconut coir for many years now to start seeds and it works wonderfully. The only issue i came across is the seed hulls getting stuck on the collodion leaves. I think its because coco is soo light . Coco works best for me . 👍🍻
