USING D-C FIX TO WRAP SHAKER KITCHEN DOORS
Here’s how I wrapped my shaker cabinet doors using d-c fix wrap. Please note that you do not need to remove the existing wrap on your doors - mine were peeling off so I removed them before starting with the new wrap.
There are other methods to do this - this is the method I used and found the easiest.
Colour used - light grey

Hi Laura, really helpful video firstly so thank you! I wondered if you’ve had any experience with wrapping like this where the cupboard grooves are curved at all? My Mum is looking to do hers but the groove pattern on the door is arched at the top. Would love to know your thoughts? Thanks 😊
@LauraDoesLife
@LauraDoesLife 3 жыл бұрын
NJS I haven’t done a curved groove before myself but this would definitely require a heat gun/hairdryer if it’s the type of door that I am thinking about. I would say basically any surface that isn’t flat, place the wrap in position on the flattest part of the surface and then use heat to mould around any curves using a squeegee or small tool to push into place. I hope that helps 😊

It’s funny, I just bought some glossy white vinyl to do my cupboards (haven’t even received them yet) and I stumbled across this video. What great timing. I am almost finished with my kitchen countertop, which I covered in a glossy, glittery black. Fortunately, my cupboards are straight with no insets or even hardware so it should be fairly easy. I bought black handles for the cupboards and drawers. My cupboards won’t be as difficult as yours but this video is so helpful - thank you!

You can cover over existing wrap, there is no need to sand down. Just make sure the surface is clean. An existing grain shouldn’t show through as dc fix is quite a good thickness. It’s holding up really well around my oven so the heat isn’t causing any damage, I think it is heat resistant up to a certain temperature. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching 😊

Kelly Morgan so far it’s holding up well but it’s only been on a month or so. I would say if you are going to paint then make sure you put a varnish over the top so that is more durable when wiped down. The wrap is easy to clean but I would say keep some spare in case you need to make any repairs further down the line. I scratched some of the cupboards when I was fitting new worktops but was easy to fix with a new piece of wrap. Have you seen the full completed kitchen with new worktops? Question for you since this looks like such a good idea. I am very patient and like detailed work....but....I have intricate crown mold at the top of my kitchen cabinets that have a fancy rope/braid pattern on it. Would this vinyle take on that shape? My concern is if I can do all of the cabinet and doors with the available white of this material, but have to paint the crown mold on the cabinets, it might look odd (painted surface and color difference side by side with the wrapped doors). I would have to be able to wrap the crown mold in order to match the color and finish. Love to hear back from you on this!
@LauraDoesLife
@LauraDoesLife 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Donna, if you have the patience it should work but l would definitely recommend using heat on it with a hairdryer and probably use something like a cotton earbud or orange stick to push the vinyl into place into the crevices on the moulding. Lay the vinyl over the top, turn on the heat and push into place. Would also only recommend using the Matt finish not the gloss. The gloss is much thicker and harder to work with but the Matt should go on fine, it will probably just take a little bit of practice. I’d remove it from your units too if possible so that you can sit at a table whilst doing it ☺️

I want to do this to my bedroom cupboards that have a thin strip of wood around them, wonder if it’ll be the same process
@LauraDoesLife
@LauraDoesLife 3 жыл бұрын
If there is only a thin strip on the edge you may able to do them in one piece rather than in strips depending on the thickness of the strip 😊

You did a good job,you could have made it easier for yourself by doing the centre piece in 3 strips.

You’d think so at first look but you actually waste more of it like that - because the middle is set lower there wouldn’t be any coverage on the inside edge if you get what I mean? You’d then end up having to cut a larger middle piece for the edge to be covered and waste the smaller middle section.

Where can I buy the D-C Fix Vinyl Wrap? Is it sold in USA?
@LauraDoesLife
@LauraDoesLife 4 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure if you can buy it in the US - I know that there are people who sell it on Amazon, but it’s more expensive than what it is in stores. There are other sticky back plastics that will do exactly the same job on Amazon, I’m sure there will be some that ship to the US - thanks for watching 😊

Hi im curreny doing this at the moment.ive came across a few small bubbles as im doing it which ia annoying if any tips?x thanks
@LauraDoesLife
@LauraDoesLife 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Anne Marie - bubbles are easy to sort, just get a small pin or needle and prick into the top of the bubble then go over with the squeege and they should come straight out! If you’re getting a lot you maybe be working it too fast, try holding the wrap up off the surface and only let it touch the surface when you are ready to smooth over with the squeegee. Hope that helps! 😊

how long does this wrap last, has it peeled off yet on the edges
@LauraDoesLife
@LauraDoesLife 4 жыл бұрын
No it’s not peeling yet, I’d say you’d get a few years out of it definitely. If you can master doing it in one whole piece rather than in sections like I’ve done her then I’d say you’d probably get longer out of it!

Painting would be much easier! In the time you spent on the first strip I would have had the first coat painted on both sides

I don’t understand why people watch this video if they think painting would be easier. It’s a completely different concept and finished product. I regularly paint furniture and it’s so hard to maintain. Kitchens get a lot of wear, paint requires so much maintenance. As mentioned for other comments, this is purely for demonstration purposes, when you are doing your own kitchen it really doesn’t take that long.

Hey there, what would you suggest as a primer?
@LauraDoesLife
@LauraDoesLife 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kirsty, there’s no need to prime before using this product. Unless you have a really poor surface, then I’d just use a standard paint undercoat perhaps and give it a sand and wipe over before applying.

If you want a good primer then it's got to be 3M tape primer 94, it is expensive though, £29 for a 250ml tin, wipe the primer into the grooves with a lint free cloth and it double the adhesive qualities of the contact paper, I use this all the time at work and wrap kitchens etc on a daily basis.

I’ve painted cabinets and this looks less tedious actually definitely less messy and less steps
@LauraDoesLife

Definitely easier! Painting would have taken priming, 2-3 coats and a few coats of varnish. I like the finish with this too! Visible brush stroke would have driven me crazy!

I have bar high table and a 6 cub storage unit (Target) in the corner of my living room. I would like to make them the same color in a wood finish. Problem: table has beveled edge and a circular edge in front!!! Any ideas.???
@LauraDoesLife
@LauraDoesLife 4 жыл бұрын
Bevelled edges are slightly more difficult, definitely use a heat gun or hairdryer and cut the edges so they bling at the fold. Maybe also cut separate pieces and try to join them?

DЯAiИ G4ИG H€ЯФ I’d tried this and was really tricky as the center part of the doors was lower so it was constantly ripping and creasing up. If the middle had been raised it certainly would have been better to do it that way. This particular style of door was just a bit of a nightmare with only 2 hands!
@Blue-kb6jz

Laura did you prick holes along the grooves when you tried the heat hun?
@LauraDoesLife
@LauraDoesLife 4 жыл бұрын
Roo Blue yes I did, I was trying it on a larger door and the middle is quite deep. Probably with another pair of hands to hold the door or the hairdryer I might have been able to manage it but by that point I had wasted quite a lot of the wrap so looked at this way as an alternative ☺️ definitely better to do it in one section if you can manage it although I’m glad I’ve done it like this as My dishwasher door has a scrape on it so will be easy to repair one section rather than re-wrapping the whole door!
