Can’t wait to order some! I do acrylics and use tempura sticks for pops of color, but have a hard time controlling them. These look like they would work so much better. Thanks for sharing!

Glad you are back! So do you think that the gelattos will replace the tempura sticks in your art? Do you think that the color will wash out after applying medium for collage? It seems that the watercolor I use on tissue washes out when I apply medium.

Ooo La La Marabeth!! You sure made magic on that Rice paper!! ~❤~ I think I have a few of these butter sticks around. I feel like doing a comparison study with the Yummy Tempura sticks you turned us on to a year ago. Because that first green stick was not the same color as the color shown on the stick - it would be interesting to watch you do color swatches with them all. This was really fun!! Thank You!! ~xo~

@pattymelt415 There are a few really big differences between the Gelatos and the Tempera Paint Sticks-one of the main ones being that the Tempera doesn’t really blend too much. If you rub on it very much, it sort of balls up and disintegrates but the Gelatos (without water) will blend really smooth and nicely, and (with water) can move pigment all around. I have to do more experimenting to see exactly what I love most about each one before I can accurately compare.

I checked out on Amazon!l Although they would be. An additional good product, the main drawback is costN Amazon Canada has them at. $110! Thank you for the demo!

While I love faber castell, these are disappointing and really aren't worth it, save your money, they aren't lightfast either Caran D'ache neocolor ll would be a much better option.

Thanks for providing your feedback-I know it’s always helpful. I find the Caran d’Ache crayons to be quite different than the gelatos, so sort of apples to oranges however, if money was the issue and I had to choose between unlike materials, I agree with you and would choose the crayons!

Hi Debs! I have to do a lot more experimenting to really accurately answer that, but a couple immediate differences are that the Tempera paint sticks don’t blend with your finger-they sort of break apart and disintegrate, but the gelatos will blend smoothly all over the place. I’ll try to do an update after I’ve explored a bit more with them…

I'm a big fan of FC Gelatos, and glad to hear you singing their praises...but they aren't technically LIGHTFAST in an "artist grade" way. They may be FADE RESISTANT because FC does use quality ingredients in all of their products. I think a manufacturer can say that this or that is lightfast and they probably are somewhat lightfast, but no one should rely on that 100%. I've learned since I've moved from crafting into fine art that a lightfast rating from "not much to very," will often be displayed in how many stars it gets or a number rating and also disclosure of pigment codes, transparency and granulation if any. These are industry-wide ratings for artist and professional color products and you will see the certification & safety marks & warnings for cadmiums & cobalts marks and logos like ASTM for example. FC knows this as they make very high quality professional artists products and will include this information on the products or product packaging. But lightfastness is a tricky thing, even for the big name paint makers and it's also very expensive for them to certify & test lightfastness on all or most of their colors...that's the biggest reason they're so expensive. Thanks!

So interesting how they can actually make that claim…or maybe they don’t anymore and I just saw old literature. 🤷‍♀️ But thanks for the info! I’ve never been one to exclude a product because it’s not lightfast-I do work with paper, so the basis of what I do is just going to change over time to some degree (hopefully a small degree), but I know for some fine artists, lightfastness is crucial and non-negotiable.

I love the gelatos on rice paper. Do you know if you get them wet again after they dry if they will re-activate? TFS

I assumed yes, but just read that they are water soluble but dry permanent, so clearly I have more experimenting to do!

A bit, but the gelatos will blend and spread color around under your finger whereas the tempera paint stick will usually not blend so well.

They most definitely are-if you get them wet, they move all over the place. I’m still experimenting to see all of their characteristics, but that’s a fun one…

Patty, not Tempura but Tempera. They are 2 very different things

Unfortunately despite the claims, these are not lightfast. If you do a search, you will find lightfast test results.

I have seen those results as well-some say they are very fade resistant, but also the official claims from the company say that they are, so it’s definitely wise to be tested by any artist that is really concerned about that. Thanks for the comment. 😊
