Using Gesso On Paper (and Beginner Art Journal Techniques)

Gesso is an important & valuable tool when it comes to learning how to paint on paper. It primes the paper for mixed media techniques such as paint, inks and various mediums. If you are new to gesso or art journaling this video will help you get started with a few simple instructions on how to use gesso properly and how it will help you in your art journalling process.

Is there something that you can use like gesso that covers the words in one coat but also leaves the page smooth for writing on?

There's a technique i do quite often that requires gesso-ing the paper first. Mine always seems to come out so thick. Thanks for this though, the watering it down a tad really helps!

Clear gesso would be pretty cool, and transparent paint. Hmm.. gotta try that.

I would recommend singing the song before Gesso'ing. lol This is a great idea ... I'm going to try this on some old books I have laying around. A new sketchbook!!

+7700Purplexity I know! I have all of these old hymn books because many churches sing worship songs that are on a screen & so I got some from my church & from my brother in law who is a pastor at another church.

I have bought a sketch pad 300gsm that says it is ready for acrylic painting but there isn't any priming done.. so, should i need to apply gesso first??

Well that is definitely the first time I’ve ever heard that. Nobody ever tells me I have an accent and I definitely never hear people tell me that my voice is in any way pleasing. Haha.

I’m new at journaling & art. What kind of ink was that beautiful purple ink? Did you add water to it ?

Using books with such thin paper as hymnals will not hold up well with or without gesso. You will want to consider gluing two or three pages together per each page of journaling. Also white glue is known for turning yellow, cracking and peeling over time so please beware. Depending on your mixed media style, you may have to remove pages from your journal so the binding does not break. Thank you for your video. I can see you are a Jane Davenport fan as I am too!

+Julie Torrens yes- I definitely add 2 or 3 pages together. I have a few other journal & binding videos where I remove pages etc.

Hello, thank you for the great tips, I am new of these things so I really appreciate your video, I saw used ink and gelato dyes but what about acrylic colors and watercolors, are they working as well? Thank you and I1ll watch your other video!
