Inhaled insulin is one of the newest and fastest insulins on the market! YES: people with type 1 diabetes can use inhaled insulin! This is my personal experience with inhaled insulin - how it works, how to dose it, and the impact it has on my daily life with type 1 diabetes.
Inhaled insulin is currently approved for use in people 18 years and older.

YES! It's exhausting the amount of extra calories T1Ds consume to keep up with insulin.

Why is this not the standard method of taking insulin in 2024? This is so much better than injected insulin. I'm on Medicaid so I doubt I can qualify for this, but I'm going to ask my doctor the next time I see her. ETA: And then the next video on getting insurance to approve inhaled insulin pops up!! Yipee!

Sounds a great thing for me. You spoke on Diabetech about disliking cgm alarms. Info: I low carb, use Libre2 linked to Samsung Galaxy Watch & Phone with Diabox app where I disable all alerts or enable those I want. Use Omnipod Eros with Fiasp Insulin to set Basals. The cough the people experience is called vocal cord dysfunction. The vocal Cords spasm closed blocking the airway, in response to mental or physical stress, hot/cold temperatures,and inhaled irritants. To prevent this take your afrezza out of the refrigerator and let it warm up a bit. If you still feel like coughing, blow out with rounded lips like you’re blowing out a candle. This directs the pressure away from the vocal cords. Drink water. This resets the vocal tract. Afrezza sounds amazing. How much of a hassle did you get from your doctor? Most don’t want to prescribe for some reason. Why are they so afraid?

Hi Louise! Thanks for sharing these coughing details! My doctor was very obliging but that is rare for sure. Most simply don't like prescribing something they don't know much about. They want to feel like the experts. Some are also confused with the first form of inhaled insulin -- Exubera -- which was a failed product. A lot of misconceptions don't help! Hi there. Type 1 for 31 years. Currently on the TSlim pump with control IQ tech synced with Dexcom Cgm. I finally have an A1C of 7. lol I know that could be better, but that’s phenomenal for me. Anyhow… what type of long acting insulin do you need? And is there a guide to dosing with Afrezza? I would LOVE to not be on a pump, but am super fearful that my sugars would spiral out of control. I tried a “pump holiday “ for a weekend and it went horribly. My steady long acting insulin could obviously not keep up the way my pump does with autocorrecting for fluctuating sugars. Any advice on switching?

I know a lot of people who use Afrezza with ControlIQ! YOu could try it without going off your pump and see how you like it. Managing without a closed-loop system can be a lot of work, though, if you're not fond of making those daily little insulin adjustments yourself. If that's been challenging for you in the past, going off your pump probably isn't a great idea. If you could try Afrezza while you're still on your pump, that would be a great start! Do you use Afrezza for complex carbs? If you do, how do you dose for them?

Hi Brad! Some meals require a "follow-up dose" which means I take another dose of Afrezza an hour or two later depending on the meal. For really slow-digesting meals, like pizza, I take a combo of Afrezza and Novolog to make that slow breakdown a little easier.

Do you solely use afrezza for meals and corrections? Or do you combine with insulin for bolusing meals?

Hi there! I still use Novolog occassionally for really high-calorie meals. Like pizza: I'll take some Afrezza when I start eating and then a small bolus for the delayed digestion because of all the fat in pizza!

Thank you. I’m going to research ur website, the articles & videos you have. I’m on Omnipod anytime u have to bolus 15 mins before to be effective. But my dinnertime has been terrible. I start w’30 carb dose 15 minutes before. Then the stacking begins depending what & how long I’m taking to eat. If I forget to dose plus I went on a pump because any long acting insulin I took, I bottomed out @ 3:00am-7:00am I sleep right thru. Would wake up to 40 for past 4 hours. 🤷‍♀️ The pump has stopped that from happening. I’ll ask my dr abt afreeza for dinner & other times. As I hate the pump injects in one spot for 3 days.

oh wow I did not know they had an inhale insulin now. I wonder if one day they will be able to develop an inhaler insulin in placement for injections all together.

It's pretty awesome! Unfortunately, many doctors refuse to even learn about it, so people who ask about it often cannot get it.

@@DiabetesNerd sounds about right. Both types of diabetics have issues with doctors it seems. Docs not caring enough for the need of a type 1 with inhale insulin and docs giving horrible advice to type 2 on what to eat. Mine told me to "eat all the carbs I want" 🤦‍♀️

What if there is no injected insulin? Would work for just meals to prevent the blood sugar from going too high?

People who need basal/background insulin would still need to take an injection of long-acting insulin but Afrezza inhaled insulin can replace your mealtime insulin needs.
