I downloaded JMRI onto my MacBook Air and connected it to my Digitrax DCS52 Zephyr Express, set JMRI up to change points and control my trains. Also WiThrottle wireless control to come soon...

That's really impressive. Digital control is like a hobby itself. I'm still in the world of analogue points/mimic panel, but use a Z21 for train control / CV setting. I like the idea of route setting and automated running which your set-up potentially allows. Trouble is, I struggle to find time for the basic layout building, let alone doing a full Star Trek job on it! 😉 Looking forward to seeing more. All the best.

It’s really more of an experiment at the moment, to see if I could do it and how much hassle it would be, and as it turns out it was a fair bit of hassle! I was going to go down the analogue route with points and signals, but from previous layouts, I wasn’t looking forward to the miles of wiring! That said there’s still a fair bit of wiring with DCC point control, but it’s pretty much all localised to the area around the decoders, 2 wires indeed!!

Nice video, well done. I just spent last weekend setting up my layout panel in JMRI so can control my points and signals through it. Connected to a gaugemaster prodigy advance 2. Surprised more people in the UK haven't done it. Took a while and plenty of trial and error to find out what will work best (especially for signals with theatre indicator and ground signals) but it is nice using a touch screen tablet to quickly set points and signals. Might do a video on the set up at some point.

Thank you! It’s all a big experiment at the moment, it may work out to be too bog a faff as I’m not sure if I like the control panel thing, and I’m not hugely keen on having my expensive MacBook out in the garage either. It’s kinda worth it for the WiThrottle though, and I may see if I can invest in a cheap secondhand router for the garage just to get WiFi out there, as it’s out of range of the router in the house. The other route is buying a Digitrax wireless adapter and using WiThrottle that way

Can you also control the train with the zephyr at the same time it is running with JMRI ?

You certainly can

Hi Ian Love the videos! My experience with JMRI ended after 18 months... it’s a very steep learning curve. I was aiming for automation but could never get it to work properly. In the end I reluctantly gave up as it took too much of my time away from the railway. I still use Decoder Pro as I think it’s the best. Traincontroller was my next choice and this worked out great for me though it’s not cheap however, you can jump straight in with automation without hours of work. There is a series of fantastic YT videos by a Dutch guy that will walk you through the program. Also take a look at ROCRAIL, its free and seems to echo some TC features (One might even think it’s written by an ex TC employee) wiki.rocrail.net/doku.php?id=start

Don’t know if I’ll be going for automation, as I like to have control myself! I wanted to have a go with JMRI to see if I could build a half decent control panel with it. I got a panel built as you can see in the video, but there’s something about it that I’m not that happy with, as it feels like I could potentially mess it up at any moment! And I really wanted my control panel diagram to look like a traditional signalbox diagram, something that I think I’m going to pursue at a later date using DCC control. One of the main things I wanted to try with JMRI was using WiThrottle on my iPhone and iPad, but I’m hampered by the non existent wifi signal in the garage! Will be looking at the Digitrax wireless module I think, as Withrottle will work with it. My name isn’t Ian though, it’s Chris 😉😉
