AUM is the best for audio first based musicians. I import whatever i’ve created in midi into AUM after creating a wave file. It runs audio units with very little fuss too. It works great with outboard gear too. Cubasis is pretty close but audio units with crap out too fast/easy. AUM has so many solutions built right in.

AUM makes so much possible with ease. Fantastic video in many ways. An important thing to see is how much you can do on an iPad using vary affordable apps and an audio interface. I have had so much fun with AUM. Another way to do something cool is using Korg Gadget using the synth gadgets and Taipei gadgets to send MIDI into AUM to use any synths or drum apps. I don't understand why Korg hasn't added the ability to use AUv3 inside of Gadget. It would make gadget a million times better. To be able to add any AU effects to a gadget track.

I think it’s totally genius how you’ve worked this out here and I’ve really studied it to see if I can improve my own workflow. I’ve been on the fence about LK for like 2 years now lol n even after this I’m still not sure 🤔. I’d love to hear your response here because the place I’m seeing overcomplexity in this approach is when I compare it to my Koala/AUM based workflow….Since koala is now an AU with multi out, I just do basically everything inside a few patterns and then just run a sequencer like atom or helium to trigger them as needed, basically the same as you did with the multitrack loop snapshots except it just seems to be far less clicking around and routing complexity. Full disclosure, aum and koala really make a lovely match with the apc40 and launchpad I have connected to the setup, and the only place that’s difficult would be if I were to record like full vocal tracks but it’s mostly hip hop acapella verses also triggered in koala by a midi trigger. I’m so so with Cubasis so I’m still dumping my work into Ableton for final details and all but I’m totally with your attempt to go full tablet, I just can’t risk slowing my workflow down to this hyper-modular approach. I do love the fact that we have aum and guys like 4pockets etc making it possible to attempt all these creative methods and I’m hugely impressed by your attempt at a full workflow but I still don’t see a reason to leave koala for multitrack or Elliot Garage stuff when I can trigger loops and patterns of audio more easily in a single app….I’ve even tried using koala with aum which was interesting but felt slightly unnecessary although having the “scene follow with” stuff ala Ableton is a nice little touch. I dunno brother, it feels frustratingly like we are so close yet so far from being able to replace an Ableton Live setup for an iPad for most genres at this point. Of course doing a standard rock song in Cubasis is totally doable and their waves plugins help a lot but there’s just a lot missing for complex electronic and hip hop genres that may be doable in a drambo heavy AUM rig but so much faster and flawless workflow still exists right there in ableton. Maybe if lk was to simplify its interface to be a pure session view matrix solely for arrangement, while we could use aum as mixer, atom/helium as piano roll and then have someone like Bleass attempt to make a modular replacement for the devices element of Live we would be rolling, not to mention a way to integrate linear recording from aum sessions the same as we can do in live we might be there. Or maybe I just need use a keyboard with my iPad rig for the shortcuts lol Sorry for rambling! Huge fan of your work! Keep moving us forward brother!
@JamieMallender
@JamieMallender 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob! This is a fascinating conversation I’m frequently having. I like LK better for automation and clip launching but Koala is far quicker to use. I love spending time in AUM trying to make it work as a DAW and I’ll try anything that helps with that but honestly, it’s still a pain recording guitars and vocals. Multitrack is great considering that it’s a low price mini daw that’s being hosted inside another app but it’s not like using Cubasis. I’ve sometimes done an AUM mixdown and dropped it into Cubasis to do guitars and vocals and then drop that audio into multitrack to mix with the multi-out and add fx but it seems a faff about. You can make it work but there’s no great solution as yet. Triggering guitar parts from LK is easy enough but if you’ve got audio that starts before the bar it gets really messy. I’m still experimenting and still enjoying it but still finding that it’s not really quite there. Ever since I got an iPad I’ve found that the secret to getting anything creative done involves bouncing projects around between apps. I suppose eventually we want to see a DAW that can do what Cubase does or what Ableton does. The power is coming as the devices get better and better but app sales need to improve for the developers to keep working on these things. And, the iOS needs changing to allow the big iPads to fully utilise the ram available. Thank you so much for watching mate, take care and contact me anytime.

@@JamieMallender after spending many moons thinking over the topic, I’ve had to admit that the best way to approach this is not just optimal workflows but who is getting great musical results and out of what….and to my total surprise, between the iPad gurus on KZfaq such as yourself and say Jaqob Haq etc or more experimental types like Perplex On (possibly I’d fit in that niche but at the bottom of the heap PO stands atop!) and the actual people I interact with IRL who I’m lucky enough to know and who also happen to be drawn towards….iPAD production. And I have to say, the best product of all is coming out of a local mc/producer called Cadillac Cal only a few miles from myself and he releases EP after EP on Apple Music, fully mixed mastered, vocals the works. It’s hip hop but it’s very complex in the arrangement and the vocals are dynamic as hell And guess what he uses!?? NO PLUGINS AT ALL! Just GarageBand for iPadOS with the default effects. Even more frustrating is his mic setup…..the damn iPads internal microphone!! I think he uses his car as his booth. And it sounds amazing! So after the countless hours of koala into aum busses n midi controls all over…the best stuff comes from a guy using a free app and a mic most of us wouldn’t dare use but it sounds like freakin Kanye produced it! @@JamieMallender This is a wonderful video, very useful, but as feedback I'd say the background music while you're talking is quite distracting. Ithink I;d prefer the bin man. I was initially searching for what tab I had open playing something in the background.

Hi Jamie! Excellent walkthrough! I'm starting to use LK to sequence midi hardware synths. What APP could I use to record audio tracks (in real time, while they are sequenced by LK) and give it a final production or last polish. And I would need the tempo to be synced to LK's. I just subscribed to your channel, I really enjoyed your lessons a lot. regards!

You could just arm the tracks in AUM and record them into a recordings folder in AUM or you could link those tracks to Cubasis and record there. I’d I want to work in a weird unorthodox way there is garage band and gadget. I’m sticking with cubasis and ns2. I do however use AUM all the time for live keyboard and drums setup, especially if I’m using hardware. I just can’t see how l.k. Would be useful to me. I am gonna checkout modstep later but I’m think8ng that’s very similar to ok and I’m going to stick with cubaisis. Good video Duuuuuuuude just not for me.

I've been trying to figure out how to arrange songs in AUM instead of using Cubasis and this is the closest I've seen. Though LK is amazing I still want to see a multitrack timeline overview of all of my tracks like in Cubasis. Does anything like that exist that I can add to AUM?
@JamieMallender
@JamieMallender Жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, thank you for watching. No such app exists, only multitrack which I used in the video. But that only gives you 8 tracks of audio and doesn’t show anything else you have in the project. I spent a long time trying to use AUM as a DAW because of the lack of an iOS DAW I was happy with. But then Cubasis 3 got some updates that truly took it to another level and I haven’t bothered since. Now that Cubasis 3 can handle a lot more AUV3’s than AUM I don’t really need to. I still use AUM a lot but I use the 2 things for distinctly different purposes now.

@@JamieMallender thanks for confirming my suspicions! The AUM interface is so nice to work with and not intimidating at all for a newbie like me so I really am drawn to it. Though Cubasis doesn't look bad and as someone looking to create songs it looks like the DAW for me. There goes more of my money into iPad music production 👋

I tend to agree. The workflow is very possible but not as straightforward as recording audio into a good DAW. It does appeal to me though to work in different ways, I enjoy that. I’m not completely sure as I have all the unlocks. I can’t see how it would be effective without The Matrix but the rest of the IAPs I have barely used yet. But to me, for that price - that’s way cheaper than Cubasis 3 or Auria Pro - and it didn’t crash on me once.

There is not necessarily a reason to buy the other modules besides the matrix especially if you already have external midi controllers or you don't need them for your workflow. I got the matrix during a sale for $5, the other modules are also on sale from time to time. LK is without the slightest doubt an outstandingly powerful tool that is constantly being bug fixed and updated with new features by excellent and communicative developers. Check the audiobus forum. You can also use LK as a remote control for Ableton, export LK projects as Ableton project files and seamlessly edit them on the desktop, support Novation Launchpads and other controllers, and so much more, absolutely brilliant and completely underrated by many. Finally an Ableton-like clip launcher for iOS! And for the ridiculous money a bargain. Can‘t praise it enough!
