Great info! I can relate to that sunken feeling. My main property got logged two years ago and I thought it was over. It’s been way better since the logging happened!

As a former WI logger I can attest to deer loving a fresh cut, especially in the winter when it's cold and snowy....the deer come out and nibble the tree tops in some cases before the skidder gets shut off for the day. There is always lots off fresh deer tracks on the logging roads every morning no matter the time of year

Excellent job at breaking a cut down.... Black berries are a huge magnet for deer in northern Michigan after a cut.... Four of my state land properties had select cuts done and the very next year I hunted those properties and it was like hunting over a 300 acre food plot... Prior to the cut the areas that I hunt has terrain features of large cedar swamps to the north and west and flooded River bottom to the South with the ridge in the middle being oaks and various other hardwoods, deer we're passing up acorns to go to blackberry bushes.... I would sit normally until 10:00 for the mornings and then go back out around 3:30 to sit for my evenings prior to those cuts being done. My very first sit after the cuts was in October, I decided to stay on stand all day from daybreak to sundown I counted over 70 deer just popping out of the blackberry bushes that they were bedded in all night. They would just get up wonder and feed a about 100 yards then bed back down all day. During that sit I seen 3 bucks that where 130's. Also a key to this I think is what's the most available food source in the area normally, if there are crop Fields within a mile or so they can make a big difference on the attraction of a clear cut until they are harvested but northern Michigan does not have a lot of agricultural so dear normally will move 3 to 5 miles a night just to find a reliable food source. Never have I seen that on Michigan's state land it was truly a lesson learned. Also noticed the wind really does some funny stuff. That day I had to move my set up 3 times due to the wind that was a steady 6-8 NW all day but it was swirling more than I had ever experienced before in the same location, I believe that was due to the lack of trees blocking the wind and the thermal effects of the Sun hitting those open spots and warming them up.

I currently hunt 60 some acres. Had a strike of luck and got permission on 20 more acres on the edge of a 3 year old clear cut w a thick patch of timber still standing in the middle. The trails are more beat down than ever and we have seen deer each time walking the property just to scout spots to hang stands. So excited I thought the logging would be a negative but the deer sign in and around the cut is incredible

Problem is with clear cuts in my areas. Everyone that hunts the transitions, and They are really really wind specific Also sometimes if its not as thick and bucks can get into the middle of it. Its very rare with pressure they make it to the transitions during daylight. Clearcuts in my areas are pounded with pressure so I actually look for what i call micro points and micro bowls the stick out or into the clearcut. Very very wind specific in a way that if its a nw wind they will bed just on edge or up to 20-30 yards into the cut on se side of cut then they can still be watching open woods in front of them. Wind over back watching open woods in front is prime bedding conditions Great video.

Interestingly I had some timber work done a couple years ago now and really have not noticed an increase in mature buck movement in and around it. Neighbor 5-700 yds away still holds mature deer, esp early season. It's a big woods area with no appreciable food plots besides the few acres planted on my place. I'm not sold on clear cuts

I want to add in my areas that the does will bed on these straight transitions or just inside. the bucks will bed on corners,bowls,fingers,and points. they usually do not bed in same places or spots. might not be far but the bucks seem to like some sort of breakup of transition. wind over back and really watching some sort of open transition and in high pressured areas they will watch human access

The value of the cut is also greatly affected by the crew/company do the cut. I saw places in Maine that we referred to as "Mars" because the cut was done so poorly that nothing grew for a decade. It was completely torn up to the point you could not walk anywhere and the limbs acted like mulch stopping growth. This was a full clear cut, nothing left at all. Some lumber companies just "hit and run", cutting then selling it off. They take yarding areas with the consent of what must be paid-off state inspectors. Known yards in Southern Aroostook county had no deer activity following the bad winters of 2006/7 when the herd was decimated by 20+ feet of snowfalls. These yard areas that took decades to develop were now absent of deer, so the brilliant state inspectors that are in place to protect the wildlife give the go-ahead to cut them down. Yards are yards because of the trees, size of trees, location relative to water and sun exposure. That there were no deer present following such a high mortality set of winters should have had no bearing on the value of the yard. What it shows is who really runs the state; those with the money.

where i live, they absolutely devastate the woods. the clearcuts look like an atomic bomb went off. and they stopped cleaning the areas after logging, like they used to. now, they just leave everything a mess. and a new practice, in the last few years, is then going back in, shortly after the logging is done, and they rip the shit out of the ground, making it completely unwalkable for people. just complete destruction really.
